DiskStation DS1815+ 16TB (8 x 2TB) 8-Bay NAS Server Kit Overview

This B&H Kit combines the Synology DiskStation DS1815+ 8-Bay NAS Server with 8 x 2TB internal hard drives for a total capacity of 16TB.

The DiskStation DS1815+ 8-Bay NAS Server has eight drive bays that are capable of housing either 2.5" or 3.5" SATA III and SATA II hard drives and solid state drives. This NAS is powered by a 2.4 GHz Intel Atom C2538 Quad-Core processor with an integrated AES-NI hardware encryption engine. You also benefit from 2GB (1 x 2GB) of DDR3 RAM which is expandable up to 6GB (2GB + 4GB) to help ensure smooth operation. Enhanced data throughput of 450.68 MB/s read and 429.1 MB/s write speeds make it easy to transfer large files quickly, and with link aggregation support you can rest assured the connection will remain secure.

This energy efficient NAS storage enclosure supports VMware, Citrix, and Hyper-V for virtualization environments and comes VMware vSphere 5 and VAAI integration certified. Additionally, the DS1815+ can virtually replace more complex storage setups as it offers both Windows ACL and LDAP support allowing for easy integration into existing workgroup environments. If the current data capacity offered by the DS1815+ is no longer sufficient, the NAS enclosure can be connected to dedicated expansion units to expand storage capacity up to 108TB.

The DS1815+ enclosure comes equipped with two 120 x 120 mm fans to keep everything cool. On the back you will find four Gigabit LAN ports, two USB 3.0 ports, one reset button, and two eSATA connectors making it easy to connect peripherals such as external hard drives, thumb drives, and more. The front features dedicated LED indicators to depict drive status, eight hard drive trays complete with tray locks, and one power button. Included with this kit is an accessory pack, an AC power cord, and two RJ-45 LAN cables.

question

Hello, Description says NAS enclosure can be connected to dedicated expansion units to expand storage capacity up to 108TB. Does it mean, i can expand more than 108Tb, connecting to dedicated expansion unit, using 8-10Tb HDD's ?I need unit, exactly the same NAS as DiskStation DS1815+, but with up to 144Tb upgrade ability
Asked by: Oleg G.
The drive compatibility of the Synology DiskStation DS1815+ has been updated to support 10TB drives. That means 80TB without adding expansion units. The DX 513 expansion units will each support 5 10TB drives as well. This has the potential to give you 180TB of raw combined storage.

is the Seagate 3TB 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5 Internal Hard Drive compatible?
Asked by: Cabot S.
It can accommodate the 3TB drives. If you intend to use this for video distribution there is a way to cache files using SSD. It is SATA III. The software is flexible and has deep configuration capabilities. Synology online support is good and can guide you through the setup. Look to the Synology website for the specifications and further information.

question

Does it work with Apple's Time Machine?
Asked by: Lyman
Yes! I have five Macs running OS X (Yosemite) 10.10.3-4 using the DS1815+. It is MUCH faster doing backups than the Apple Time Capsule or Passport external drives... Works very well. BTW, restore works...tested both a full system restore as well as individual files.

I have used several CyberPower models CP1350PFC CP1500AVC and with the USB connection it will power down the Synology safely when you have a power outage and this save your data.
