Sony CBKZ-X70FX Reviews

4K Upgrade License Key for Sony PXW-X70 is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 44.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from This may be my last sony product.. The mail in rebate was not visible when I purchased my x70 on April 15th...Nor the License key... The limitation to 4K at 60MB Instead of 100MB minimum like the AS100 sounds more like another firmware marketing gimmick than any hardware limitation... I am sure the camera can even go higher than 100MB... Same engine as the AS100 but they put lower quality on the more expensive X70 model... The person at Sony who takes pride at insulting our intelligence, and who decided to create that technological aberration should be fired... It Seems like Intelligence has become a disease at Sony and they are taking their customers for dumb cashcows...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what it's advertised to do. Tricky install. So, most folks are whining about the low bitrate of this 'enhancement' . But we've all known about that for ages. Yes it's annoying, yes Sony should fix it... but that doesn't mean you give the product upgrade a low rating. It clearly states everywhere that the 4k option is 60mbps. If you don't like it, don't buy the upgrade and complain to Sony. As far as this is concerned it works well once you figure out how to install it. It records in 4k, and everything advertised works well. The trick to installing is you must use all 'lower case' letters when registering the code. Even tho the code is printed in all upper case on the form. Annoying and why I docked a star because it took forever to figure out with a bunch of folks suggesting I just read the docs. Well, the 'lower case' bit isn't in the docs. :) --Chris

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does it have to be this difficult? Works great when you finally get it installed. I tried following the directions and as it guides you through the many hoops you have perform on line. In the middle of the directions for what to click on and enter on the on line system, it says to press the menu button. Well, there IS no menu button on the on line form. What it doesn't say, is that they are referring to the menu button on the CAMERA! It seems obvious after the fact, but not so much when you are trying to follow the steps as the camera itself is not even part of the process until that point.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quick way to install the key The suggestion from other posters to call SONY instead of registering online was very helpful. Here is what you do. 1. Call SONY at 866-766-9272 and go through automated menu to speak to a pro camcorder rep - I may have been transferred once but as long as you give your model number and that you want to install a key, you'll get to the right spot. 2. Give rep the serial number of your camera, your purchase key number and email address. 3. rep emails you the following info: a. format an SD card in the camera b. then insert SD card in your computer c - download and copy a file that is attached from SONY reps email to the SD card. The trick here is to copy the file outside the folders. It won't work if you place the file inside any of the root folders or sony folder. The rep also sends a PDF file but that is not needed in the process. 4. Put the card in the camera, press Menu/Others/Option/Install Option. Once it installs, to shoot 4K, press Menu /REC/OUT SET/REC SET/FILE FORMAT/XAVC QFHD. And you will need an SDXC card as well. Sony rep was great and responded to multiple emails after we spoke on the phone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As always, excellent value from Sony There is currently a $$rebate offered by Sony so that drops the price of the 4k upgrade to $$. Sony takes care of their customers and their broadcast division technical support is always very helpful. The video quality on this 1 chip camera is excellent.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Satisfied With This Purchase. The upgrade itself works great. For only being 60mbs the footage looks great. However, I had to deduct a star due to it's confusing and time consuming online installation. Followed the upgrade instructions via the Sony website and never made it past the registration step. My advice to others is to skip the online upgrade process and simply call the Sony Professional number to do the upgrade. It was MUCH faster and easier that way. Whole thing only took 20 minutes or so with phone support.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lowest 4k bitrate in the industry. I'm not sure why Sony has chosen 60Mbp/s as the maximum bit rate for this upgrade. Statistically speaking, this is lower than any other 4k camera on the market today. Even the lowest cost consumer Panasonic, JVC, Canon and all other Sony 4k cameras use 100Mbp/s or higher today. I hope Sony fixes this problem fast. This upgrade does give clean 4k HDMI 4:2:2 and that is why I recommend it. In fairness, 60Mbp/s looks OK if you don't grade it. However, it is very fragile, delicate and will break easy in post if you try to push or stretch it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Holy Cow!!! This $$upgrade has a $$rebate by Sony. I took advantage of that and I'm glad I did, my PXW-X70 now records in 4K as well as what it did before that. You will need a special SDXC card to record however and I recommend 128 GB as that gives you 2 hours in 4K. In 1080 P, that same card gives you about 7 hours. Just but the key and it's an easy download fro Sony.

I just upgraded my PXW-X70, which is my first ...

I just upgraded my PXW-X70, which is my first foray into the 4K world. The manual says recording time shooting at 4K/100mbs is about 1GB per minute, but my initial test clips seem to be over 3GB per minute. Any guidance?
Asked by: scott
That is bizarre are you should really be capturing about 80 seconds worth of footage to get 1GB files when working with 100Mbps. Do try some more tests and be sure you are not recording proxy files as well and checking on the clips folder. Do also try to format the card prior to taking new clips. Do try to record with just the cap on the camera to see if there are any fluctuations.

End User must send printout of completed online form, entire ORIGINAL UPC product code label from the box of CBKZ-X70FX 4K license key purchased. So UPC product code from the camera box is not neccessary...just proof of purchase?
Asked by: Robert B.
That is correct. You need to supply a copy of the purchase invoice from the Camcorder, not the UPC Product Code from the box.
