Axler APC-GH4 overview

  • 1Description

The rugged aluminum Axler Professional Cage for Panasonic GH4 adds stability and protection to your camera, while providing a 15mm rod baseplate and numerous 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 mounting points for attaching optional accessories. The cage includes a bolt-on top handle for easy rig handling and carrying on set, which features additional threaded mounting holes as well as two shoe mounts. A third shoe mount is integrated into the top of the cage body.

Compatible with the Panasonic GH4 and GH3 cameras, the form-fitting cage maintains access to all camera controls and functionality, including the battery compartment and SD card slot. An HDMI cable clamp ensures that your cable doesn't accidentally come loose while shooting, cutting off the feed to your external monitor or recorder. It also helps prevent damage to the HDMI port, which is further bolstered by an included micro-HDMI to full-size HDMI adapter cable.

The cage attaches to the included 15mm LWS baseplate using a sliding quick release system, allowing you to remove the camera from the rods when a compact, handheld form is desired. When mounting the cage onto the baseplate, it is secured in place using a rear thumbscrew. For tripod mounting the entire rig, the baseplate features 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threaded holes. A pair of 11.75" long 15mm rods are included to support an optional follow focus, matte box, or other rod-mounted accessories.

    Axler APC-GH4 reviews

Professional Cage for Panasonic GH4 is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Heres the thing... Its a phenomenally well made product in terms of its build quality, its as well made as any other camera cage I've seen on the market. The problem though lies in that it doesn't have a quarter inch thread on the bottom of the actual camera cage portion, so it must be attached to the riser block and rail for you to be able to use it at all. On top of that you must take the cage portion off the riser block to switch batteries, which luckily the batter life on the GH4 is so good that its not that big of a deal but its still definitely a thing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice cage but the HDMI retainer is not ideal. When this cage went on sale my debate over getting it ended. It is a relatively light but solid cage which retains access to all buttons, doors, and dials. The HDMI cable retainer is a great idea to ensure that the cable stays in place, but it is a bit awkward to insert the cable into the camera when the cable is fixed in the cage and equally inconvenient to manage the screws if you want to insert the cable after the camera is mounted. Other than that, it is great. The retainer is removable but it does not block the screen - it just prevents it from opening past 170 degrees or so. You can still use it flipped out or flip it over.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic product and excellent value for money! This cage for my GH4 is incredible value! Not only does it work perfectly, with all the correct dimensions for accessing the camera controls, plus media and battery slots, it also includes a set of rails, handle and an HDMI port protector, with its own micro to full size HDMI adapter. It's very strong and solid, with many mounting points, and looks awesome too! Really amazing. I thought product packages like this were a thing of the past.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not built with flip out screen in mind This cage arrived today. It's great, very solid and easy enough to put together. The down side to this thing is that the micro HDMI lock that attaches to the cage in order to protect the micro hdmi port is built in such a way that it does not allow for the GH4's screen to pivote completely. Also, if you're planning on throwing this thing on a glidecam or simply put the camera upside down, that same piece stops the rotating screen from flipping around so that you can see what you're shooting when the camera is upside down. Not to smartest design to be honest, but a great cage for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from VERY good for the money. Bought it on sale, can't beat the value for quality, features, and fit / finish, even at full price. I actually removed the top part of the cage and reversed it so that the handle would be on the right and the cold shoe would be on the left; this makes it easier to get low shots with my right hand without accidentally bumping the shotgun mic I have mounted to the cold shoe. I recommend putting blue loctite on the bolts that you don't plan to remove often. Helps keep things from developing any play (I actually do this to almost any hardware I use that will see extensive use).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Built WITH flip out screen in mind. Ignore the 3 star review on this cage. This cage is built with the flip out monitor in mind. Simply remove the HDMI wire protector from the cage to make room for the flip out screen. Only use the HDMI adapter and protector when using an external monitor, in which case you will not need the internal flip out screen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes my GH4 so much more useable This is a very well-made and well-designed product. So many mounting points, plenty of choices to attach just about anything I need to use while shooting. I use it to add a SmallHD monitor, a Sennheiser wireless receiver and a Tascam audio recorder. The support for the HDMI cable and included adaptor make me feel much safer about not only being sure the audio doesn't get interrupted, but also being sure that the HDMI port on the camera does not get broken. As another reviewer pointed out, the mount for the HDMI adaptor does make it impossible to open the LCD panel all the way out. No problem for me, I just flip it over and use it on the back of the camera, but it does impeded viewing from high or low angles. But, of course, I have the external monitor attached anyway. Makes a GH4 look completely professional to clients as a bonus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Construction for Accessories and Wire Safety Our non-profit has been using the GH4 to record 1hr+ conference talks for about years now. Recently, we started using a video switcher, which accentuated some design flaws of the GH4. Mainly, the mini-HDMI connection port on the left side will often lose the connection. If that happens, we have to refresh the whole system. We bought this rig to not only give some stability to that mini-HDMI cable, but also to attach lens supports and the atomos power station. Those will come in the mail shortly, I hope to provide a second update after we've attached the whole rig together. What I see right now: stable metal construction with no visible movement from baseplate to top handle. Our mini-HDMI doesn't budge at all, and we're still able to access cards and battery compartments while the camera is all rigged up. Definitely worth the money.
