Manfrotto XPRO Ball Head Kit with 200PL-14 Pl... Reviews

It's been great

This replaces a Vanguard ball head. This one takes care of several problems that one had. I like the quick release plate, easy on and off for the camera. When I lock it down the camera doesn't droop a little bit the way it did on my last ball head. And it does have a bubble to tell you when you are level, a feature that was a requirement for me when I was looking for a new tripod head. Overall very satisfied customer.

This is a solid ball head.

This review is for the Manfrotto XPro ball head with the 200PL-14 Quick Release Plate. It has 3 adjustments on the body, Pan Lock, Ball Lock and Ball Friction. The Pan Lock and Ball Lock levers can have their seated positions adjusted to any position. The Ball Friction adjustment works as expected. I have heard of other ball heads having issues with sloppy Ball Locks, they can wiggle around when not tightened down. Not So with this unit. The Pan Lock lever can be loose to allow panning, yet there is nothing sloppy about the panning action. It pans as expected. The quick release plate assembly has an improved safety release, different from earlier models, but I don't have any issues with it. The only issue I do have is that the quick release plate can only be installed one way, and its front and back are easily confused. But in short, this is a solid unit that works as it should. Not sure you could ask for much more. Chris H in Toledo, OH

Had to try something new!

I am a heavy user of a tripod, and after 14 years of using the 322RC2 Head, I was developing pain in my hand and needed a Head that would be easier on my thumb/hand. I read great reviews, and watched videos explaining how the 200PL worked, so I ordered it. I was also happy they added the safety release. I am thrilled with the product! It's so much lighter and much less pressure on my hand to grab the grip to move the Head around. I use the level on the Nikon D500 and I can get the Head to level quickly without a lot of effort - my main goal. Overall and I very happy with the upgrade and purchase. I also thought the price was fair. Lastly, the Head rotates quickly and with ease from horizontal to vertical. Another must!

A bit disappointed

I have been using Manfrotto's ball heads with 200PL quick release for more than 20 years now and am a bit disappointed with this new one. Here are my opinions: Pros: 1. As always like a product from Manfrotto, it's sturdy and smooth. 2. I also like the secondary locking which could control 360 degree movement separately. Cons: 1. The quick release lock is too easy to be closed. In old designs when the quick release lock is opened, it could only be closed and locked when the camera/quick release plate is placed with pressure (camera body weight) to trigger it to be closed and locked such as 496RC2 and 468MGRC2. In this new design, when the quick release lock is opened and with a very minimum touch to the lever the lock would be closed. This causes the quick release lock to be closed and locked by accident a lot and getting annoying. 2. In the past, the quick release lock mechanism were all built with metal parts. However, this new one the release lock lever is plastic and a thin piece of plastic. I wonder how long it will last. 3. It has a tension knob to control the tension of the ball movement which is an excellent implementation. However, the tension knob is located very close to the primary locking knob and inevitably the tension knob would be touched and sometimes turned when tightening the primary locking knob. This kind of defeated the purpose of the tension knob since the tension would be easily changed. The narrowest gap between the tension knob and primary locking lever is only 3 mm, less than 1/8 inch, wide. I will keep this ball head only because my old ball heads are all just too old and don't work smoothly any more. However, I am disappointed with this new design especially how easily the quick release lock is to be accidentally locked by only a tiny touch of it. I am also curious in how long will the plastic quick release lever last.

Its exactly what I was looking for, a quick release ball head that makes my photography easier. B&H had the best price and the salesperson in the store was very helpful.

I value the lock and release option and how good it fixes the camera when you are composing.

question

What's ball size? 38mm or 40mm?
Asked by: Anonymous
Manfrotto does not list that specification in any literature related to the ball size. Chances are it is 38mm but in general there is no reason for that size to be in the specifications. The ball if you had to replace that part does not come separate and is part of the enclosed mount. This is a link to the parts http://bit.ly/1JPcwc1.

This head will work with your tripod but uses a different plate (included). You will not be able to use your Arca plate with this head.

Would this ball head be strong and solid enough (without drift) for a Nikon D500 with Sigma 150-600C lens?
Asked by: Carole
I would certainly believe so. It easily supports my Canon D5M4 with a Canon 100-300mm zoom. There is a micro adjustment that can allow you to really clamp down when using heavy gear.

question

HI , I own Manfrotto Befree Compact Aluminum Tripod. I want to replace the tripod head with Manfrotto MHXPRO-BHQ2 XPRO Ball Head with 200PL Quick-Release System . Is it possible to remove the tripod head in the Befree compact Tripod and replace with this one ? Any additional adjustments required? Thanks
Asked by: Mallikarjunaiah
Sure, you can use this head with a Befree Compact, but don't expect the tripod legs to fit over this much larger head when you collapse it for travel. Also, there's no way that the tripod will fit in its supplied bag when this head is installed.I own a Befree with a couple of different heads also, and what I do with larger heads when travelling is to hang the head off my camera bag with an inexpensive Oben 1/4-20 hanger (BH# OBTH14) and install it out in the field.

question

Can the 200pl version of this head be converted to top lock without buying a full head?
Asked by: Robert C.
I believe that it should not be difficult to unscrew the current 200PL with an Top Lock. Remove the plate then unscrew the quick release system.
