Photographic Solutions Sensor Swab Ultra Overview

Changing lenses on your camera when you are in the field can cause dust and debris to land on your sensor when it is exposed. The 12-pack of Type 3 Sensor Swab Ultra from Photographic Solutions features 24mm wide swabs for FX or Full-Frame sensors. They're designed to clean oil, dust, and debris.

The thick and double wrapped swab is highly absorbent, and each swab is individually packaged to maintain the purity of the swab for cleaning. The fibers of the swabs do not shed once the sensor has been swiped across.

Great product, but you need to know the proper technique.

End result: Exceptionally clean sensor. How did I get there? Read on. First, I used a Vidpro Static Spinning Brush. That was a joke and actually put more dust on the sensor. But I'm not reviewing that product here. Second, with the same order I purchased a Pentax O-ICK1 Image Sensor gummy stick. That worked ok, or at least it removed some dust, it didn't add more like the static brush. My third weapon I employed was this sensor swap product (along with the Aeroclipse cleaning fluid). My first run through was actually not too bad, I put about 7 drops on the swab, wiped it with medium pressure, reversed it, added drops, and did the same in the other direction. 90% clean I would say, but what annoyed me was that the tail end left some streaks. So I grabbed another swab, wetted it and repeated the process. This time with about 4 or 5 drops on each side. More streaks than before. I tried it again with fewer drops, even more streaks. Noticing a pattern, I decided to try and add many more drops for a fourth attempt. Voila! The fourth time around I added maybe 20 drops to each side before the swipe. No dirt and no streaks. I'm including my test pictures so you can see the progress. Note the larger blobs were actually lens dust I failed to remove before starting the sensor cleaning process. I removed the lens dust between swipe #1 and #2.

Worked well for me. I did get streaks at first, like others. But after looking closely to what was happening I found that I was not putting enough of the fluid on my swab. It was getting absorbed and moved up the swab quickly leaving very little at the tip which actually touches the sensor. The fabric ridges of the swab were all that were able to touch the sensor since they were kind of stiff. After I realized this I put many more drops on the swab, not enough to drip off, though. Once the swab was thoroughly wet the ridges of the fabric were softer and squished more when I wiped, therefore getting rid of the streaks. Cleaned it very well.

The previous version from Eclipse is no longer available; this one does work. Evidently, a number of formerly Nikon USA authorized repair facilities (Nikon USA no longer allows any independent repair facilities and will not supply any significant parts, materials, repair manuals, or tools) use the above plus Photographic Solutions Aeroclipse Digital Sensor Cleaning Fluid B&H # PHAERO MFR # AERO to clean the sensor in the Nikon Z9. If a reader of a review does NOT know how to do this, even with the correct products (such as the above), do NOT attempt it. You could ruin the sensor. Do not let an arbitrary shop/store clean the sensor -- the technician/photographer needs both the correct supplies (above) and the skill from practice.

What is the shelf-life of these (sealed and stored) in a camera bag?

I've used Photographic Solutions Type 3 Sensor Swab Ultra cleaning swabs for years without fail. As far as I know, they have a very long shelf life kept in their individually sealed plastic wrappers designed to keep them clean and moisture free until use. I usually purchase several month's to a year's worth of swabs at a time without a problem when I need to use them.

Type 3 is compatible with full frame (24x36) sensors, Nikon Z5,6,7. The Z50 is a DX sensor camera needing the type 2 swab.
