Key Features
- F-Mount Lens/DX Format
- 24-120mm (35mm Equivalent)
- Aperture Range: f/2.8 to f/32
- Four ED and Three Aspherical Elements
Designed as the DX workhorse, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR from Nikon is a 24-120mm-equivalent zoom, well-suited for a broad range of shooting applications. Its bright f/2.8-4 maximum aperture range benefits working in low-light conditions as well as controlling depth of field for selective focus shooting. Equally impressive, the optical design features four extra-low dispersion elements and three aspherical elements, which help to control both chromatic and spherical aberrations for notable image clarity and sharpness. Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings are featured, too, and minimize flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when shooting in bright and backlit conditions.

question
How weather resistant is this lens?
No more than any other non-professional lens. It's internally focusing, but the lens does expand when zoomed, so there is a good possibility of dust and moisture getting in there. It's also an electronic piece of equipment, so getting it wet should be avoided.

How does the 16-80 lens compare with the older ...
How does the 16-80 lens compare with the older Nikon 16-85mm lens? I am considering replacing my 16-85, as it is getting old (like me).
The Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR Lens has a specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism that provides greater exposure control stability, especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates. This is the main advantage of the 16-80mm over the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens. Keep in mind this mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

question
How does this lens compare with the Sigma 17-70mm lens? Looking for short zoom macro for a Nikon D5500.
None of those lenses are technically considered a macro lens, but the Sigma 17-70mm will be able to focus closer than the Nikon 16-80mm.
