iOptron designed the green SmartStar Cube-G R80 80mm f/5 GoTo AZ Refractor Telescope as a simple, yet highly versatile, grab-and-go astronomy rig for beginners or advanced amateurs who want to go out for quick observations.

The optical tube has an achromatic doublet lens system that is fully multicoated to produce bright and sharp high-contrast images with accurate color rendition across a distortion-free field of view. The relatively short focal length produces a fast focal ratio, which makes it ideal for imaging the sun (with proper solar filters installed), moon, and large planets. With the two included eyepieces offering low and moderate magnifications, plus the addition of an erect-image diagonal, this scope can be used as a traditional terrestrial spotting scope as well as for astronomical observations.

The brain of this system is the GoToNova computer controller. This handheld unit features a database of 50,000+ objects with space for 128 user-defined celestial or terrestrial bodies. The easy-to-use menu-driven system displays on a 4-line, 21-character backlit screen. This fully GoTo-capable unit has automatic tracking for fast-moving near-space objects, such as the moon and planets, and slower moving deep-sky objects like nebulae and galaxies. For setup or manual use, it has five slew speeds starting at 2x and going up to 4°/second. The GoToNova controller is powered by the mount to make use easier while reducing the unit's weight.

Supporting the OTA is the compact Cube-G GoTo Alt-Az mount. This functional, flexible, motorized, and computer-controlled unit is ideal for most stargazing duties, yet sports a compact design that measures a mere 8 x 5 x 5" and weighs just 3 pounds. The dual-axis servomotors are built into a small single unit that is easy to carry, even to more remote locations. The unique design eliminates "dead spots," enabling you to point your telescope to any point above the horizon without the risk of blocking the telescope tube at certain points of rotation. To make setup even easier, a 32-channel GPS receiver installed in the mount automatically obtains accurate date, time, and location information and sends it to the hand controller—all you need to do is confirm the information. You can use the included AC adapter to power the mount, but if you're heading off the grid it can run on eight user-supplied AA batteries. An adjustable-height stainless steel tripod is provided to give you a solid and sturdy support system for your night of observing.

Optical Tube

  • 80mm aperture
  • Fast f/5.0 focal ratio
  • 400mm focal length
  • Air-spaced doublet refractor design
  • Achromatic lens configuration virtually eliminates chromatic and spherical aberration to produce images with accurate color rendition without distortion across the entire field of view, especially at the edges
  • Anti-reflection fully multicoated optics improve light transmission, image brightness, sharpness, color rendition, and contrast
  • Resolution: 1.4 arcsec
  • 1.25" rack-and-pinion focuser

GoToNova Controller

  • Easy-to-navigate menu-driven interface
  • Easy One- or Two-star alignment
