question

What are the limitations on the Microsoft WIndows 10 Pro 64-bit OEM DVD?
Asked by: Paul
Functionally, an OEM version of Windows is the same software as the full retail box version that you would purchase in a store at a fraction of the cost. Your software arrives in a cardboard mailer and not a fancy box. A adhesive Certificate of Authorization (COA) is provided containing the license number that has to be used for activation of the software after which it must be permanently affixed to the computer to be in compliance with the terms of service. The algorithm of the license key tells the Microsoft Servers which version of windows (Home vs. Pro.) and whether it is an OEM or full retail. The trade-offs for repurchasing an OEM version of software is that the license is permanently tethered to the original computer that it was activated on, in other words it cannot be transferred to another computer. Secondly, Microsoft only provides minimal technical support for the software leaving the end user to have to research and troubleshoot issues for themselves

Instead of using the DVD can I download, put Windows 10 to a flash drive and activate it using the PID.txt method, where the product key is on a file located on the flash drive? The reason I'm asking is because I already have Home installed and it'll automatically activate that version if I install it without adding any files.
Asked by: Thomas
If you already have Windows 10 Home installed, go to Settings - Update - Activation and enter the pro key from your purchase and it'll upgrade it even with the full license key.

I want to put in a larger hard drive and then install Windows 10 Pro. Will this DVD do that?
Asked by: Lawrence
Yes the OEM version will work just fine. If you plan to install all the currant updates as well, you can save yourself a lot of time by using the currant build "Windows 10 October 2020" Go to Microsoft's downloads and download the "Create Windows 10 installation media", you'll need an empty 8GB or larger flash drive, "be aware" the media creator will format the flash drive, so make sure there is nothing on the drive you might need, do not download this installer from any other website, here is the correct link https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
