Rokinon Xeen 24mm T1.5 Overview

Rokinon's Xeen 24mm T1.5 Lens for Sony E-Mount is built specifically for use as a cinema lens. It features an internal focus design so that the lens does not change size while focusing, this minimizes the appearance of breathing when changing focus. Each lens in the set is multi-coated for good contrast, glare prevention, and are color matched to a factory standard, allowing you to assemble a set over time with minimal color shift. This 24mm lens provides what is considered a wide angle of view on full-frame cameras, and a tighter angle of view on smaller formats.

The lens features dual sided focus scales marked in feet, with dual sided iris scales. The 11-bladed iris provides a rounded aperture for a natural looking highlights and Bokeh. The lens is a manual focus and iris lens, and does not have auto focus or auto iris capability. It incorporates cinema-style focus and iris gears that share the same position across the lenses in the Xeen set. The common 114mm front diameter allows for quick lens changes when using a matte box and focus accessories. The focus ring rotates 200° from close focus to infinity; this gives you a high degree of precision when adjusting focus.

This is a 24mm lens that has an image circle that covers a full-frame sensor. When mounted on a camera with a full-frame sensor it provides you with a wide angle of view.
The lens features metal construction to withstand the rigors of daily production, and comes with a support foot that can help take strain off your camera's lens port.
Dual right and left side focus and T-stop scales allow your focus puller to work from either side of the lens, without having to flip the lens in the mount, or facing upside numerals.
Each lens in the XEEN series share common focus and iris gear ring positions, which speeds up lens changes as accessories such as follow focus units or iris motors don't have to be re-positioned.
The common 114mm front diameter allows for quick lens changes as you don't have to swap out anti-reflection donuts or adapters to use the same matte box.
The non-rotating front allows you to use optional clip-on matte boxes.
"Clickless" aperture ring for smooth iris pulls.
A minimum focusing distance of 10" allows you to get up close to your subject.

question

Why are these Rokinon lenses costing almost 10x as much as the Canon mount versions?
Asked by: Nathan B.
That is a fair question. The difference between consumer and pro level cine style lenses comes down to functionality on set. In order that the exacting work of movie making be as efficient, reliable, and consistent as possible, there need to be certain design parameters. 1. Excellent resolution, color and contrast image quality that all lenses in the line match. This is so you can cut between them in editing and not waste time making sure each lens seamlessly has the same look.2. A big barrel is needed by the 1st Camera Assistant for precise focus control.3. A common size front diameter is desired so the matte box fits all of the lenses quickly, without fiddling with adapters. The placement of the gears on the lens must be in the same place so less time is used on set adjusting follow focus devices and remote motors for focus and iris. Finally, similar weight lenses mean less time balancing MoVI, Steadicam and other stabilizing devices.4. The DS line has 8 iris blades which is good for bokeh. The Xeen line has 11 blades which is better. All of these parameters cost money. As you go in the filmmaking world, you will see the benefits they provide.

question

should you use this lens on a Ronin even tho its not auto focus? If not which lens are good?
Asked by: Shawn D.
This lens could be used. However, while the Ronin can handle this lens and the large camera it most likely would be used with, for you we would recommend a smaller, wider 14mm lens. You could try the the Rokinon AF 14mm f/2.8 FE Lens for Sony E B&H # RO1428FSE stopped down to say f/8 or f/11. This would have more depth of field and almost universal focus if set to the hyperfocal distance of the lens.

What focal length does this lens become when using a camera with a super 35mm sensor?
Asked by: Peter
Crop factor varies in Super 35mm due to sensor size variations within the category, but the Xeen 24 would be equate to approximately 33.6mm ~ 36mm. Another helpful spec would be its field of view in Super 35mm, which is listed as 61.2 degrees.
