SmallHD EVF-501 overview

  • 1Description

The SmallHD EVF 501 Sidefinder with SmallHD 501 On-Camera Monitor is a combination of optical loupe and SmallHD 501 HD on-camera monitor, creating a flexible high-resolution EVF that can quickly transform into a 5" on-camera monitor. The optical loupe mounts on the 501, causing the 501 to resize the image from 1920 x 1080 to 1366 x 768. This keeps the loupe at a reasonable size while presenting you with a clear image with sufficient pixel density. The loupe incorporates diopter adjustments from -2 to +4, which is a generous adjustment range for those without 20/20 vision. The loupe incorporates a 1/4"-20 threaded mounting hole and accepts optional mounting accessories.

The other component of the Sidefinder is Small HD's 502 HDM On-Camera Monitor with 3D LUT Support, which brings Full HD resolution to an on-camera monitor the size of a smartphone. The screen packs 441 pixels per inch, providing a sharp clear image on a very small screen. It takes just three seconds to boot up. The unit is 3/4" thick and weighs about nine ounces, so it is light enough to mount on your camera without weighing you down.

Small HD has developed a menu system designed to be easy to navigate with the built-in joystick. The Pages system allows you to create and store up to eight preset configurations. You can easily see the effect of your configurations on the image, swiping between them with the joystick. The 501 supports 3D LUTs, and you can save those as a configuration page as well. You can apply a configuration page setting to either the monitor's screen, the output, or both at the same time. You can also assign a different configuration setup to the monitor's screen and the output.

The optical EVF loupe mounts onto the SmallHD 501 via an included solid aluminum mounting bracket with a high-grade friction hinge that allows you to turn the Sidefinder into a 5" on-camera monitor without needing to remove the optical loupe; just flip the loupe out of the way.
When used as an EVF, the 501 reduces its image size to 1366 x 768, allowing the size of the optical loupe to remain manageable while providing a sharp image that does not suffer from pixelization—the appearance of individual pixels discernible within your image. When you swing the loupe away from the 502's screen, the resolution on the 502 automatically resets to 1920 x 1080.
The loupe incorporates a diopter adjustment from -2 to +4, accommodating most camera operators that do not have 20/20 vision.
You can adjust the Sidefinder's field of view from approximately 40° (the default setting) to approximately 20°.
The SmallHD 501 on-camera monitor features a Full HD, 1920 x 1080 LCD display with a pixel density of 441 ppi. The 501's LCD display is able to produce an 85% NTSC color gamut (greater than the REC. 709 color standard), rivaling the color capabilities of OLED technology.
You can apply a 3D LUT to the monitor and still view your video in real time.
The configuration system, Pages, allows you to create and store up to eight presets. Presets can include focus and exposure aids, camera metadata, and 3D LUTs. Once created, you can navigate between the presets merely by swiping the built-in joystick. You can see up to three presets displayed at the same time as you swipe between them, which is different than having to engage a menu system and trying to remember what each preset is. You can see the effect of your configuration on the video.

    SmallHD EVF-501 reviews

EVF 501 Sidefinder with SmallHD 501 On-Camera Monitor is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great monitor and EVF The monitor quality is great. I love the amount of features and customization packed into the monitor. I can change just about anything and add just about any tool onto my display. This is the most feature packed monitor I've ever used and the fact that it can also double as an EVF is awesome. I found it hard to mount the monitor/evf to my FS7 rig. I had to go out of my way to find a mount. The remote disconnects from time to time and it's a little annoying. Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase and I'd recommend this monitor/evf if you can get past its little quirks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly Recommend Five stars. Can't live without it. I love the ability to create custom pages. Used it on a film two weeks ago and was very happy with the ability to flip through and check lots of settings incredibly fast. The build of the sidefinder is much bigger than what appears in the pictures so it gives a great professional look. I feel like the clips that hold the frame to the 501 could be al little more sturdy. Time will tell on durability. Also, it's kind of awkward releasing the clips as it requires one hand on the frame of the side finder and the other hand on the monitor to pull it back. This makes it precarious or impossible to flip it out when handheld. But this is just a minor criticism and has more to do with my personal style of shooting than about the product itself. Highly recommended all the way round regardless.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It comes with challenges, but worth it!!! I absolutely love the sidefinder - in terms of having an instant decision to shoot low with a monitor or flip it closed and go shoulder-mount... it's a no-brainer for run-n-gun or any kind of documentary production. As an EVf (once you learn the details and figure how to easily mount your remote,) it is amazing. As a monitor, it's one of the best focus assist / waveform / and true color / exposure representation of any monitor. I shoot all cameras but I most often use this with Canon DSLR's (mainly 1dc, 5dm2, 5dm3.) because of it's unique design, which is necessary for it's huge array of functions, there are some challenges you must face when adding it to your rig/set up. Especially if you are having to shoot on the fly. My only warning is this: Mounting this device has been the most daunting, time consuming and annoying process. I have tried literally 6 different evf mounts and finally came around to the Zacuto Z-Arm because you NEED to be able to quickly move the monitor and you NEED the reach that the 12 z-arm provides because the unique set of issues the sidefinder brings, the best answer is the z-arm while also making you have several easy 15mm female mounts, so you can quickly re-position. I'm opposed to noga and israeli arms because they always slip and aren't solid, but with the 15mm ends, the zacuto 12 large z-arm gives you all the flex you need. you will likely need extra hardware to be able to remove the z-arm quickly. But the sidefinder, it's accuracy, its compact size and amazing capabilities, make it worth the headache of figuring out how you will mount it. I would suggest, after many tries, that the old fashioned noga arm (or similar) is the best choice. Just find a way to make sure the monitor can't spin on the single 1/4 20 mount. The 15mm rod ends of the Zacuto help with this. Good luck! Search my Canon 1dc user blog to come collab about issues specific to Canon 1dc!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Completely Awesome Great device but pricey. Great quality monitor and the sidefinder gives you the option of switching back and forth between EVF or Monitor mode. Go ahead and bite the bullet on this one.
