FiiO EX1 overview

  • 1Description

Styled sleekly in silver, the EX1 from FiiO is a pair of in-ear monitors with 13mm drivers sitting at the heart of the unit fashioned of titanium—a material more closely aligned with the aerospace industry than the business of earphones. However, as titanium boasts both a high sound-conduction speed and a density stiffer than traditional steel, FiiO has opted for this construction in the goal of delivering an even frequency response, especially in the high-range.

These in-ear headphones also offer a greater presence in the bass frequencies, as well as minimal distortion values (below 1%). A metal encasement designed to minimize resonances at every point of contact helps ensure a lifelike transient response to boot, resulting in music sounding precise and detailed.

Strong Housing
The EX1 offers a housing of CNC milled anodized duralumin and stainless steel, positioned to deliver desired sound-tuning properties
Nanotech Titanium Diaphragm Drivers
Helping to ensure an even, powerful frequency response and a naturally energetic sound, these drivers can handle high levels without distortion all the while preserving a precise transient response
Kevlar-Strengthened Multi-Strand OFC Cable
The EX1's cable intertwines 42 strands of OFC copper with 250D Kevlar fiber, helping to bolster sonic fidelity, strain resistance, and longevity; furthermore, the outer wrapping is fashioned of medical-grade TPE, making it suitable for those with skin allergies
Ergonomic Offset Nozzle Design
Its on-ear driver housings pivot slightly from its in-ear nozzles, providing a listening experience comfortable in the short and long term
Multiple Ear Tips
The EX1 comes with four sets of ear-tips to ensure the best fit, both physically and sonically

EX1 Aerospace Nanotech Titanium Diaphragm In-Ear Monitors (Silver) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable, good bass response I am a musician/ bass player/music listener. Recently received these as a gift. They are comfortable and have much better bass response than I expected. So far they have been great, seem well made and have good all around sound for listening to music with my iPod, have not yet used them for monitors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from really nice earbuds I use these mostly for commuting/travel. These are replacing a pair of earbuds I had for many years and really enjoyed the sound and fit of, so I'm happy to recommend these. The EX1 comes with additional earbud sizes to get a proper fit, and once I got that sorted, these are easy to wear and sound great. Additionally the build quality seems solid and the cable is easy to coil neatly and prevent spaghetti.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well worth the cost I mainly listen to pop, EDM and R&B, occasionally rock, jazz and classical music.Good built. So far it had withstood tugs and pulls from commuting with my iPod in my pocket. The strain relief seems to hold up well, however the cable is springy so it tends to bump against you when walking creating microphonics that send thumping to your music. This can be resolved by putting the cord under your shirt, using the shirt clip given or cinching the cord with the sliding mechanism.Important to note as well is that sound does leak inside with moderate listening levels, but I prefer it for more awareness during travel. For those with small ears like me, it does fit well. Sometimes I even forget that I'm wearing them.Bass is punchy if the song demands it and does not muddy up the sound. Even experimented by boosting bass with EQ and it still manages to be powerful and maintain clarity in other frequencies. Vocals sound good but more so on females. Instruments sound good too, especially acoustic guitars, piano, percussion and trumpets. Never heard jazz sound this good, might make me listen to the genre more now.The soundstage is exceptional. I've owned closed headphones before and I don't want to use them anymore, the difference is so huge. The EX1 just sounds so open and airy, everything is presented outside your head. Music seems to flow freely (if that makes sense). Separation of instruments is good as well.Even used them for FPS gaming and it helped me place enemies better. There were three types of silicone tips included. I preferred the black wide-bored tips. Gray tips were too bright for my tastes and the other set made it lose a smidge of clarity, but as always YMMV. Try every tip.I use this with only my iPod and laptop, no amps, no additional cost. I bought this when it was $ and consider this a bargain and can't believe they dropped it to $. For those looking for earphones at this price range and even double that should definitely consider this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I expected/hoped for a solid product--and here it is. These Fiio in-ear monitors/ear buds were ordered to replace my Sony XBA-H1 ear buds that served me superbly for about 10 years, but recently failed in one channel. Sony changed their design, so I was not confident on whether I would like the new design. While they are probably still an outstanding product, the information and reviews for the Fiio monitors got my attention. They arrived with a range of interchangeable ear pieces, and I found a comfortable fit easily. One reviewer made a comment about the amount of leakage of outside sounds being slightly more noticeable in the Fiio product. After wearing the Fiio in-ear monitors on four recent plane trips, I found the Fiio to be even better that the Sony in being able to hear my music without very much leakage including--aircraft flight sounds and the three year old child in full-out tantrum three seats away. I was able to discern when there was an announcement by the flight or cabin crew, but that is exactly what I wanted. The reviewer may have needed to use a slightly larger rubber ear mold, included, if he/she wanted less ambient leakage. The Fiio product appears to be of high-qualify, with a very comfortable in-ear fit (and I am picky), and very respectable music fidelity. As a musician, I do not look for perfection, but I like my mp3 music to be clean across the frequency range. This includes classical, rock, heavy metal, fiddle tunes, blues--simple, clean Chris Thile mandolin lines all the way to full-on led zep and Joe Bonamassa. There is nothing I dislike about the Fiio product. I was hoping for a very good product, and I am very happy with my selection.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good earphones I purchased this one with FIIO X5-ii. After a couple of weeks break-in, it sounds very good. With this price, I consider it as a very good one. It sucks that B&H does not ship it to Canada and I had to drive across the border to pick it up. It costed me another $20 USD. I would not compare it with my ATH-M50. But with this price, I would say it is very good.
