Versatile due to its mid-telephoto focal length and bright maximum aperture, the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM is also distinguished by its high-speed performance and intuitive handling to suit its use in a wide variety of working conditions. As an L-series lens, this tele prime of course features an advanced optical design; two fluorite elements are used to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color accuracy and a Sub Wavelength Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color neutrality when working in backlit conditions. The fast f/2.8 maximum aperture also enables extensive control over depth of field for isolating subjects using selective focus, and it also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions.

Beyond the optical layout, this 300mm f/2.8 is also characterized by its four stop-effective Image Stabilizer system, which has three separate stabilization modes to suit various shooting applications. Also complementing handling is a sophisticated ring-type USM, which provides quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed for use in trying environmental conditions and it has a removable rotating tripod collar to benefit working atop a tripod or monopod.

Super telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 480mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords significant control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Two fluorite elements are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Sub Wavelength Coating has been applied to individual elements to control lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Three distinct IS modes are available: standard single-shot mode, a panning-optimized mode, and a mode that only activates the Image Stabilizer during the exposure.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Focus Preset function is available to quickly recall a programmed focusing position.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to three different ranges to suit different applications.
A Power Focus setting is available, and allows you to electronically and smoothly adjust your focus position to suit video recording. This setting utilizes a dedicated ring in front of the main focusing ring and allows you to use one of two different focusing speeds.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Removable rotating tripod collar is included and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 81.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great Lens I use this lens either by itself or with Canonx TC III. The sharpness is fantastic even with 2x TC III. It weghs just 7lbs with the TC and camera so it can be hand held for catching birds in flight. I have also a Canon 800mm which is a little too heavy for hand holding, but this one with TC gives me the opportunity to capture the subjects far away and still gives tack sharp images. The image stablilizer in mode 3 is great but I think a little overrated. I have taken photos in both mode 1 and 3 with unpredictable subject movement, and both work great and as good. If you need a lens with versatile range, I recommend this with 1.4 III and 2x III TCs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent!!! If you own this lens, you need no introduction, if you are considering it...really consider it. Ultimately you need to think about what you are getting this lens for. I shoot sports, so it was between this and the Canon 400 f2.8 II. Considering the 300mm is the sharpest lens ever tested, I figured cropping another 100mm would still give great performance, and that is indeed the case. For extra reach, I use the 1.4 and 2.0X extenders. The softness they cause is generally offset by the incredible resolving power of the Canon 300mm. It's also a fairly light lens, all things considered. It's expensive, but it is arguably the finest lens ever made. I'd get it again for sure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens I recently used this lens at an indoor gymnastics meet. The lighting was poor and the meet was crowded. No good shooting positions. The lens was able to focus well across the entire gym on backlit gymnasts against a white wall. The lens controlled the flare from the wall better than any lens I've owned and the photos exceeded my expectations. The resolving power of the lens is also at the top of my lens list. The focus speed on the lens is fast and I found the Mode-3 IS setting worked much better than Mode-1 IS when tracking fast/erratic moving gymnasts. I was able to use the lens without support while shooting floor routines.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Lens Purchased the lens a couple of weeks ago. Went from the 300 2.8 non IS to new 300 2.8IS II. My original 300 lasted 18 years great year. Was my all-time favorite lens. I tested the new one with my Mark IV on a couple of NHL preseason game, 1 youth hockey game and came away amazed. The images were tack sharp, focusing speed is fantastic. The image quality is great. I also used it with a 1.4 version II, with almost no drop off in focusing speed or image quality. It was time to replace some of my old glass. The price was hard to justify, went back and forth in my decision. In the end, Canon has nailed it with this lens...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As good as it gets The main reason I bought this lens is because recently I inherited some money. I would not be able to buy it otherwise. This lens is insanely expensive. I used it on several occasions shooting sports, portraits and landscape. Every picture comes out really beautiful. No matter where you point this lens - the result is sharp and at the same time dreamy, creamy, painterly. You need some kind of support for this lens - monopod at the very least, because it is too heavy to hand hold. I am very happy I get a chance to own this lens and I realize that most people will not get that chance - the price makes this lens quite unaffordable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Prime Prime! This is a prime lens that offers tack sharp images. It is versatile, that is, I am able to capture DIII football photos and render sharp images with a reasonable crop (I use a 1D Mk III camera.), yet I still am able to use it on a high school gymnasium floor for basketball and get some remarkably tight captures. It's best on a monopod, yet can be hand-held if needed. It's Image Stabilization 3 setting seems to be a marked improvement from its predecessor. Canon has also lightened the weight of the lens, made some improvements on the hood cover, and has included the Portrait/Landscape click alignment (I believe they're called 90 detents.) I also like the new carrying case for the lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Maybe the best lens ever! I have the big brother to this (500mm f4 IS II) and thought it was the best lens if ever used. The 300 is SO much lighter and since it can go to f2.8, opens up a lot more possibilities such as indoor and low light. The IQ is jaw dropping on this lens even wide open. Sharp in the corners and color rendering is spot on! It's only slightly heavier than my 70-200 f2.8 IS II and with the mode 3 IS makes handholding for long periods easy! It takes the 1.4 and 2.0 TC III's very well with little difference in IQ and I can't feel any speed change with the AF. So that means its a very light and useable 600mm f5.6!!! Highly recommend for birding, aviation, sports

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredibly Sharp Lens This lens is amazingly sharp. Definitely the sharpest Canon L lens I have used to date. Although I photograph wildlife primarily with my Canon 500mm F/4L on a tripod, using this lens with the Canon 2X EF Extender III gives me an extremely sharp 600mm hand holdable lens. Some of my best flight photography has been done with this lens. I strongly recommend this lens as extremely sharp with both the 1.4X and 2X Canon EF Extender III's. Also, it has the fastest autofocus of any lens I have used.
