The EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens from Canon is a high performance, water-resistant, ultra wide-angle L-series zoom lens. An f/2.8 maximum aperture is effective in low light situations and offers shallow depth of field focus control. The optical design has been improved to offer better edge-to-edge image quality. In addition, it features 3 high-precision aspherical lens elements, each of a different type: ground, replica and GMo. Its ultrasonic motor (USM) and improved AF algorithms will help the lens to focus faster and quieter. Precise manual focus is supported even in One Shot AF mode and a truly round aperture results in pleasing background blur.

All of the "L" lenses deliver optical performance equal to similar fixed focal lengths lenses and provide tight seal structures for dust and water resistance. Distortions and aberrations are remarkably small for a lens of such amazing capabilities. An included petal-style lens hood keeps unwanted light from entering the lens and causing flare and it offers a degree of protection against impact and the elements.

Ultra-low dispersion glass and three high-precision aspherical lens elements, each of a different type: ground, replica and GMo minimize aberrations and improve overall image quality.
A ring-type Ultrasonic motor (USM) provides quiet, fast, precision auto focusing and predictive tracking.
Full-time manual focus override (even in AF mode) is supported.
Circular aperture diaphragm produces brilliant out-of-focus characteristics.
A petal-type lens hood is included.

EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 1162.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Probably my most useful lens Had bought Canon's 10-22mm lens months ago when all I had was a 7D and loved it. So when I bought the 5D MkII it only made sense to get this one. I now own several L lenses and now wish they had have made the 10-22mm an f/2.8 and an L as well. Of all of them, this is the one that truly is most practical. The FOV makes for very interesting UWA pictures and yet when zoomed in to 35 can yield classic frames literally free from any significant distortion. From Landscapes, to portraits, to even street photography this lens comes through. If you are on a budget and had but one lens to buy then this would be the lens I would recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Lens at a Premium Price This is a large, heavy, high quality lens. Focus is fast. Build quality is in line with other Canon L-series lenses. This lens is sharp from corner to corne, and has excellent contrast. If you're shooting with a high quality full frame sensor, the lens is so sharp in the center that you can crop 50 to 90% and still retain reasonable sharpness for small objects. Last week, I shot a one-inch long harlequin shrimp with the lens at 35mm in a fisheye dome port, and was able to crop the image to the shrimp with enough detail to where it was suitable for posting on the web. It's expensive, but if image quality is paramount, is worth it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens Except One feature This is truly a fast and fantastic lens. I've reviewed the MTF charts beforehand and as compared to its predecessor (Mki) the edge detail is greatly improved. it's lightweight, comfortable to hold and works well in low light. My one and only and biggest gripe is the 82mm filter size that is needed. 82mm is not only the most expensive but also very difficult to find as of 1/31/12. As an example try and find the B&W #110 neutral density 10 stop filter..forget it and if you can find it the price is over $200 as with the polarizers being about $100 and the list goes on. This would be my only caution to you on this lens before buying. Not s smart move on Canon's part.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile Performer Superb landscape lens and fast enough for low-light conditions when hiking in the rain forest. Rugged build with a speedy and silent auto-focus. Very useful range for a variety of landscape shots. The color is amazing and a circular polarizer makes it even better. Using the lens at 16mm requires some tenacity to avoid vignetting: try a slight reposition of the intended shot, f/8 helps, although I have managed some 16mm shots without vignetting at f/2.8 if I took the time to position the camera with care. I often shoot all day without taking this lens off my 5D MII. Highly recommended for advanced photographers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gets everything you expect to see I remember looking at Canon's sample picture taken by this lens and thinking "that's nice" and "I would like a lens to do that." Then I got the lens and took my own picture, WOW! It delivered an image better than I expected. I love using this lens indoors. It really helped me capture the size of a customer's showroom. I prefer zoom lenses and enjoy the range this lens provides. It stays on my 50D for about 75% of any hike I go on, and you have to really look to see any major distortion in the final pictures. Great lens for outside and indoors. And L series lens is the only way to go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful wide angle lens It is always difficult choosing between top-quality zoom lenses and prime lenses. I considered the new 24mm II L-series lens and this one. I finally chose the 16-35 because of the flexibility it offers. I'm using it with a 5D Mark II, and I'm using it to take the place of my 10-22mm lens that I used with my 1.6 factor 40D--making it about the same range. I use it for landscapes and both interior and exterior architectural shots, and the images are just spectacular! I thought that image quality would drop off at 16 mm and 35 mm, but I haven't noticed it so far--the quality extends throughout the full range of the lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from top ultra-wide This is the best ultra-wide for canon full frames one can buy, you here others tell of lenses that require adaptors and cost 2 to 3 times as much and only work manually, This is a sharper lens with better color and contrast than the 17-40mm that I got rid of to buy this lens! I have used this lens with a regular screw on filter and no filter at all and it did not interfere with the image at 16mm wide open, no need for slim filters, this lens is very very well corected for a lens of this ultra-wide zoom range!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Sharp I've had my copy over a year. In my experience, it isn't sharp through much of its range and seldom comes out of the bag. I sent it to Canon repair on the East Coast. They checked it out, sent it back, said it operates within parameters. Whose parameters? I have to sell these photos to art directors. BTW, the lens was returned to me rattling loose in the box, with the original styrofoam inserts missing. I have a 5Diii, a 7D and three other L lenses, all purchased from wonderful B&H. All perform well. The 16-35mm f/2.8L doesn't. When you buy yours, check it quickly, return defects promptly, or you too may own a high-dollar paperweight.
