Well-suited for sports and wildlife photography, the EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM is a Canon L-series super telephoto lens that blends long reach with fast performance and intuitive handling. Using a pair of fluorite elements, along with four aspherical elements, both chromatic and spherical aberrations are kept to a minimum in order to realize sharp, clear image quality with accurate rendering and color fidelity. A Sub Wavelength Coating also contributes to color accuracy and helps to control flare and ghosting when working in backlit and harsh lighting conditions.

In addition to its optical merits, the 500mm f/4 is also characterized by its advanced four stop-effective Image Stabilizer system, which has three separate stabilization modes to suit various shooting applications. Also complementing handling is a sophisticated ring-type USM, which provides quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed for use in trying environmental conditions and it has a removable rotating tripod collar to benefit working atop a tripod or monopod.

Super telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides an 800mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/4 maximum aperture affords control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Two fluorite elements are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve greater clarity and color accuracy.
Four aspherical elements help to limit spherical aberrations and distortion for greater sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Sub Wavelength Coating has been applied to individual elements to control lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Three distinct IS modes are available: standard single-shot mode, a panning-optimized mode, and a mode that only activates the Image Stabilizer during the exposure.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Focus Preset function is available to quickly recall a programmed focusing position.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to three different ranges to suit different applications: 12.1-32.8', 12.1'-infinity, or 32.8'-infinity.
A Power Focus setting is available, and allows you to electronically and smoothly adjust your focus position to suit video recording. This setting utilizes a dedicated ring in front of the main focusing ring and allows you to use one of two different focusing speeds.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Fluorine-coating on exposed elements affords protection to the optical system, resists smudging and fingerprints, and is easier to clean.
Removable rotating tripod collar is included and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 44.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything I Expected and More ! Simply put, this is THE lens for bird / wildlife photography. As a petite female, I previously shied away from the Big Glass due to the weight issues. Canon has taken that excuse away. This lens is more than manageable, and the results are just awesome. The controls are intuitive and easily accessible. Sharpness is incredibly consistent and I'm delighted at the quickness of the Autofocus. It easily is the sharpest and fastest of any of the lenses I currently own.I've actually captured images of some shy subjects previously impossible without the working distance of this lens! I can't think of any Con, except that I want to use it ALL the time !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An optical masterpiece Incredibly sharp lens, quick, precise autofocus, and wonderfully balanced when on my camera. Saved for a year and luckily found a used one in perfect shape. Not a versatile lens, but what a gem when circumstances warrant its use. As with the earlier IS version, the silly sub-standard tightening system for the expensive lens hood could be improved. As is, when in the field it's still a clunky, slow, relatively fragile, aggravating mechanism (I had to order the replacement parts from Canon -- great service though) that leaves marks on the lens barrel grooves. . Heck, for field use, I'd even prefer a cheap, ugly black plastic lens hood that twists on. But, otherwise, I am thrilled by the wonderful optics of this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still Great Quality with Improvements I am a wildlife photographer and had used the old version 500 since it came out in 1999. I replaced the old one with the version II a couple of months ago, along with a 1.4X III. How does it compare to the old 500? It is equal to the excellent sharpness of the old version, but the IS is much improved - quieter, faster, and the new Mode 3 I use all the time. More importantly for me, the new version is a almost 1.5 LBs lighter. It works great with the 1.4 extender as well and the autofocus is plenty fast enough for flying birds. This lens is close to the epitomy for modern day lens crafters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best Lens - Ever After waiting 10 months for the unit to arrive I can only say it was worth the wait. I shoot wildlife and in the 2 weeks that I have the unit I have taken over 2,500 bird shots some at 500mm and some with the Canon 2x extender III and they are as sharp as can be. Some of the shots taken were so far away I would watch for a bird to land, I could not see the landed bird with my naked eye but scanned thru the lens and have taken beautiful shots. The weight is not bad and I have captured some hand held shots and they are fine, but I would not want to do this for a long time. I wish it were not so expensive but one gets what one pays for and this lens is clearly worth the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Lens! Everything you have probably already heard about this lens is true. It's lighter than the previous version, the latest image stabilization is fantastic, the image quality is stellar, and you pretty much have the best optic of this focal length on the planet when you purchase this lens. Yes, the cost is a killer, but if you are serious about certain kinds of photography (I photograph birds) then there really are not many choices when it comes to great birding lenses. This is one of them. It should last a long time and if current trends are any indication, you may end up being able to sell it for close to what you paid for it years down the road. So look at it as in investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Value of the “Great White” Supertelephotos The EF 500mm f/4L IS II is the sweet spot of Canon’s L series supertelephoto line up. It offers great reach, fast AF and the same quality build and features as its heavier, more expensive stablemates. At a little over 7 lbs, it’s quite a bit lighter than the 400 f2.8, 200-400 f4, 600 f4 or the 800 f5.6. That’s good for your back. It’s also cheaper - $2,500 less than the 600, $4,000 less than the 800 and $1,000 less than the 400. That’s good for your wallet. Pair the EF 500 mm with a 2X extender and you have a 1000mm f/8 lens that autofocuses on 1-series or 5-series bodies. Granted, the 2X extender will degrade image quality some but for me the results are fantastic. For even more fun, stack two 2X extenders with an EF-12 extension tube and you have a 2000mm lens!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazingly sharp, a marked upgrade The new 500 f/4 EF IS II USM is a marked upgrade on the version 1 of this lens, which I owned. It is noticibly lighter to hold and feels well balanced. It is sharper in the corners than the old version, and the image stabilization is noticibly better to me. Shooting birds as small objects in the field of view the focus also seems better to me, faster and more accurate. With a professional series body the mount on the lens is too far back on the lens and a foot such as that offered by Really Right Stuff works better to balance the rig on a gimbal head. The case is a monster and built like a tank. The new lens hood is an improvement but does not fit over a Lens Coat. This my favorite birds lens ever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AWESOME! I've only had this lens for a few days and I really like it. I've had a little bit of a learning curve. Some shots I've taken were out of focus but I'm sure that is operator error and not the lens. My most recent shots of Bald Eagles are really sharp. It is heavy, not because of total weight but due to it's length, but you can hand hold it, albeit briefly. 10-15 seconds? Sturdy tripod is a must. It is pricey for non-pros but if you enjoy shooting wildlife, this lens will give you a lot of reach. I read the other reviews and talked to a pro who uses one to make my decision. An inexpensive option I was using was a 300 f4 IS II with a 1.4 converter but I am really glad I bought the 500.
