Westcott 7430 overview

  • 1Description

Compatible with and complimentary to any kind of image making, the Flex Daylight LED Mat from Westcott is a unique 1 x 1' array of LEDs that are housed within a 0.25"-thick pliable mat-like casing. Mold it into an arc for product photography for true "wrap-around" lighting or shape it into a cylinder for long thin highlights in reflective objects. The Flex will hold its form however you twist it thanks to integrated pliable wire in the frame, and its thin profile and lightweight design allows it to fit where most light sources simply can't, opening up a world of creative possibilities for car, plane or boat interiors. This specific light is 5600K daylight-balanced and has a high CRI rating of 95.

In addition to the unique bendable design, the Flex LED Mat also has an IP 64 rating that deems it both dust and splash proof for use in inclement conditions. Included with the light is a 100-240 VAC power supply along with an external dimmer for 0-100% dimming control. The dimmer also features a 3/8"-16 mount for compatibility with the Scrim Jim Cine frame system. The Flex Mat itself is also compatible with Scrim Jim Cine frames, allowing you to effectively create your own LED panel.

Powerful LEDs
The Flex packs a punch with 55W of continuous power.
Flexible Frame
The Flex is very pliable, thanks to a built-in wire framework which allows the unit to maintain its shape once formed.
Sleek Design
Measuring just 0.25" thick, this light can be placed in situations where many other lights simply cannot fit.
High CRI
LEDs have a high CRI of 95.
Shooting in the Rain - Not a Problem
With a splashproof rating of IP 64, photographers and videographers can shoot with the Flex panel and optional power cord extender in the rain without issues.
Included Dimmer
Each Flex panel includes a power dimmer ranging from 0-100% for precise light output adjustment.
Slim Jim Cine Compatibility
The Slim Jim Cine frame system can be used to build a matching 1 x 1' frame for holding the Flex in place atop a stand or in other remote ways. The included dimmer also features a 3/8"-16 mount for attaching to the Slim Jim Cine frame in a seamless manner.

    Westcott 7430 reviews

Flex Daylight LED Mat (1 x 1') is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A new must for my set kit I worked with a DP recently that had two of these, I was so impressed I had to pick one up from B&H the next week, and a few other camera folks I've worked with since have also picked one up for their kit. On-camera lights can be a little harsh for run and gun b-roll, and larger 1x1 panels like the Astra which I also use can be too bulky without an assistant, even with a battery. The Westcott Flex is a great solution I've found to help bump up the quality of run and gun shooting -- even with a battery, the light is lightweight enough that my producer doesn't mind holding it for a quick shot, and it's powerful enough to bounce off the ceiling in a small room. I've even gaffed it to a wall in a space that was just too tight to boom in a backlight. I chose the daylight model because the color reproduction is very good. Even dropping some CTO with diffusion on it doesn't cut the output enough to bother me. The only concern I have is the ballast/dimmer/cable configuration is a bit clunky. The p-tapcable to run off of a battery is convenient, but I still use an old tote bag to keep all the cabley-stuff together. The x-frame stand adapter is also pretty useless, I prefer to just clamp/tape/place the light wherever I need it. I also recommend cutting some 1x1 pieces of CTO/diff/gel and toss it in your kit with a roll of 1 gaff tape. It sounds down and dirty, but I get really good results with just a plain gel taped to the unit!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A technological breakthrough Wescott has created the powerful, high quality, light weight and FLEXIBLE LED Panel that you've always wished were possible. The light weight build makes it a no brainer when you are a one man band. Quality of light is excellent and, due to the flexibility, the possibilities for this light are endless.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great light, but needs some re-design I would buy this light again, but all of the various connectors it requires makes the light actually quite heavy, even though one if its great qualities is being so light. You'll definitely want to add on extension cords to your light so that the dimmer module is far away and can lay on the ground if you're doing a setup where it's high up on a stand.
