Westcott 7450 overview

  • 1Description

Compatible with and complimentary to any kind of image making, the Flex Daylight LED Mat from Westcott is a unique 1 x 2' array of LEDs that are housed within a 0.25"-thick pliable mat-like casing. Mold it into an arc for product photography for true "wrap-around" lighting or shape it into a cylinder for long thin highlights in reflective objects. The Flex will hold its form however you twist it thanks to integrated pliable wire in the frame, and its thin profile and lightweight design allows it to fit where most light sources simply can't, opening up a world of creative possibilities for car, plane or boat interiors. This specific light is 5600K daylight-balanced and has a high CRI rating of 95.

In addition to the unique bendable design, the Flex LED Mat also has an IP 64 rating that deems it both dust and splash proof for use in inclement conditions. Included with the light is a 100-240 VAC power supply along with an external dimmer for 0-100% dimming control. The dimmer also features a 3/8"-16 mount for compatibility with the Scrim Jim Cine frame system. The Flex Mat itself is also compatible with Scrim Jim Cine frames, allowing you to effectively create your own LED panel.

Powerful LEDs
The Flex packs a punch with 100W of continuous power.
Flexible Frame
The Flex is very pliable, thanks to a built-in wire framework which allows the unit to maintain its shape once formed.
Sleek Design
Measuring just 0.25" thick, this light can be placed in situations where many other lights simply cannot fit.
High CRI
LEDs have a high CRI of 95.
Shooting in the Rain - Not a Problem
With a splashproof rating of IP 64, photographers and videographers can shoot with the Flex panel and optional power cord extender in the rain without issues.
Included Dimmer
Each Flex panel includes a power dimmer ranging from 0-100% for precise light output adjustment.
Slim Jim Cine Compatibility
The Slim Jim Cine frame system can be used to build a matching 1 x 2' frame for holding the Flex in place atop a stand or in other remote ways. The included dimmer also features a 3/8"-16 mount for attaching to the Slim Jim Cine frame in a seamless manner.

    Westcott 7450 reviews

Flex Daylight LED Mat (1 x 2') is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Love-Hate Relationship: I can't decide if this should be 2 stars or 3 stars? Here's the good: Although the color temp is 400 kelvin warmer than most Daylight LED lights, it produces natural skin tones, which is hard to find with LED lights. I saw that the 10x10 flex even earned a 97 on the TLCI scores. That's super impressive for a LED light and even more so for a company light Westcott. The 1x2 Flex light is very bright, especially when compared to the 1x2 LiteMat. The Flex LED is also very easy to pack, making travel a tad easier. Now for the bad. The only way to mount this light on a stand, in a professional manner, is to either attach a grip to it, or buy their insanely pointless metal frame tube. The metal frame tube removes any possibility of your flex light being flexible. What does Westcott think the point of this light is? The 10x10 and 1'x1' have a X-Bracket system, which works well. I ended up buy an additional X-Bracket and sew velcro mittens so the X-bracket could fit anywhere on the back of the 1x2 Flex light. I works well and I can still attach the westcott soft box to it. It's sad that I have to waste my time to doing this stuff. Now let's get into the ballast system. I have two 10x10 and one 1'x2' Westcott Daylight Flex and they all hum sporadically. All of them. They'll be fine one night and be loud the next. The best way to get rid of the hum is to turn the power below 70%. Unacceptable. And the ballast gets pretty hot. Oh, and the ballast is plastic too. I'm giving them 2 stars now. Westcott can fix the mounting issues with the 1x2, but I don't think they know how to fix the ballast issues. I could have been a great light, but I don't think it can be trusted on professional video shoots. Especially out of town ones.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Investment This light has so many different possibilities for use. I've gaff tapped it to a wall in a small bathroom. Used pony clamps to attach it to a C-Arm so it could hand down and be mover around as needed. Outside for a Key-light for close up shots and interviews. I have a 3'x5' portable soft box I use with strobes, I just used small pony clamps to hand the 1x2' matt on the inside, and it worked so well I leave the small pony clamps inside the soft box. Its very bright, the color is spot-on, it rolls up and stores easier than any other fixture I have for day gigs, or traveling anywhere. Yeah, you could get the frame...but its really not needed. I purchased this 1x3' without the frame and I really don't miss it. This would have got 5 stars but the connecters to the dimmer are not as robust as I would like. And the on/off switch on the dimmer is less than Ideal. I will probably buy the 1x3' next, and one or two 1x1's.
