Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR Overview

The classic standard zoom now featuring Vibration Reduction image stabilization, Nikon's AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR Lens is a truly versatile wide-angle to short telephoto lens characterized by its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture and electromagnetic aperture mechanism. A revised optical design incorporates a unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element, in addition to three aspherical, two extra-low dispersion, and one high refractive index elements, to help reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range in order to achieve high image sharpness and clarity. The Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings further benefit image quality by reducing lens flare for improved contrast and color accuracy and fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements protect against dust, moisture, and smudging.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, a Silent Wave Motor AF system produces quick, quiet focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Standard zoom designed for use with FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 36-105mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and using selective focus techniques.
A unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element is incorporated into the optical design, along with three aspherical, one high refractive index, and two extra-low dispersion glass elements, to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, distortion, coma (comatic aberration), and flare for consistent edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.
Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable handheld shooting in low-light situations.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.
Weather-sealed design, a rear rubber gasket, and fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements are able to withstand dust and moisture for working in harsh environments.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR Reviews

great

Upgraded from the original 24-70mm due to my older shaky hands. Works great, very sharp, much much faster autofocus on my D500.

Love it just as much as the OG

I've owned and used the standard 24-70mm 2.8 lens for many years. It was my go to lens for most of my professional work. Over time it developed "zoom grind", so I decided to buy a new one. When presented with the choice of the standard lens or the VR version, i decided to "upgrade" to the VR model. So far it has naturally been everything i loved about to original and more! It's slightly larger and heavier, but not nearly as much as many online/YouTube reviews led me to believe. If you can carry around the original, then you can handle this one too. If you're worried about the weight of your lens, neither 24-70 is right for you. Go buy a prime lens instead. The Vibration Reduction has already proved itself worth the money in my wedding work. I've developed shaky hands over the years, but now i can confidently shoot around 1/50th of a second (when i have to) whereas i dare not go below 1/100th with the original (I could go down to 1/60th but it took a great deal of concentration and effort.) I'm not sure if there is any difference in the glass used, but I have zero complaints about sharpness. Like i said, i have no complaints about the OG 24-70, but the images I've created (from portraits to landscapes) have been absolutely beautiful, and dare i say just a tad bit "more better". I've also heard people claim the auto focus is "too loud". But i find that to be a complete myth (at least for photography purposes). The active vibration reduction is noticeably quieter than the 70-200mm 2.8. Whether or not it is worth the extra money depends on your budget. But if you can afford it, I would absolutely get this lens over the non VR version.

Heavy but....

I have been wanting this lens for many many years. Use to rent it when I photographed weddings a long time ago. Finally broke down and bought it and I am so glad I did. Excited to use it on all my future session!

Big but it works

I tend to cover a lot of indoor events with poor lighting so I need a lens that is sharp at f2.8. This is by far the best 24-70 i have worked with. I had spent the last few years using my Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G1 with my D850. it was a great combo but you could see the vignetting, 2.8 was not sharp and i had to AF fine tune the lens to about a 7. The nikon lens took care of all my complaints, focusing faster, proving better bokeh and giving me a solid photo edge to edge. I even think the VR might be a stop better but that is not relevant since i normally need to shoot people fast enough to freeze action. The only con on this lens is size. it is about 1.5 longer than the second biggest 24-70. it almost looks like the lovechild of my 24-70 and my 70-200. the filter size is 82mm so don't plan on sharing filters with your 70-200.

Amazing lens, great price!

An amazing lens for an amazing price. Very versatile lens, great for portraits, landscapes or just every day use. The 2.8 is so crisp for macro or superb close up shots.

So far so good.

I just received it today and have taken a few shots across the focal lengths, and they all look sharp from edge to edge. I still have to do some rigorous testing with a tripod and target and I'll update my review after that. As for the locations of the zoom and focus rings, I like it. I'll be using manual focus only occasionally, so I like having the zoom ring right at the camera for fast framing. I do mostly bird photography with long lenses, so I'm not really used to the depth of field possible with shorter lenses. I'll be testing it on a D850 - still waiting for my Z9. Depending on my testing results, I may upgrade to five stars, but right now I'm going to leave a little wiggle room.

BEST all around lens

This lens replaced an older 28-120 f/4 NIKKOR lens that started acting up. I am so glad the old lens was crashing because this lens outshines it big-time. Although the maximum focal length is shorter, just 70mm, it is long enough for everyday use and picking up the wider 24mm (over 28mm) is a big advantage. The faster speed (f/2.8 vs f/4) significantly expands the opportunities for hand-holding the lens. The focussing mechanism is a gigantic leap forward over the 28-120 f/4. It is super fast and accurate. This is the lens I leave on my camera. An interesting observation I made and hope to learn about is that the lens (which is longer than my old 28-120 to begin with) is shortest at 70mm. At 24 mm the lens is longer, protruding out farther beyond the sun shade. How does that work?? Anyway, a remarkable lens that I highly recommend.
