Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

The classic standard zoom now featuring Vibration Reduction image stabilization, Nikon's AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR Lens is a truly versatile wide-angle to short telephoto lens characterized by its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture and electromagnetic aperture mechanism. A revised optical design incorporates a unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element, in addition to three aspherical, two extra-low dispersion, and one high refractive index elements, to help reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range in order to achieve high image sharpness and clarity. The Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings further benefit image quality by reducing lens flare for improved contrast and color accuracy and fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements protect against dust, moisture, and smudging.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, a Silent Wave Motor AF system produces quick, quiet focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Designed for use with FX image sensors, this lens is also compatible with DX sensors where it will provide a 36-105mm equivalent focal length range.
Standard zoom lens covers wide-angle to short telephoto focal lengths to suit working in a wide variety of situations.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and using selective focus techniques.
A unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element is incorporated into the optical design, along with three aspherical, one high refractive index, and two extra-low dispersion glass elements, to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, distortion, coma (comatic aberration), and flare for consistent edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable handheld shooting in low-light situations.
Silent Wave Motor autofocus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance that is ideal for photographing fast-moving subjects.
Full-time manual focus override allows instant switching between AF and MF focusing systems by just rotating the focus ring at any time.
Internal focusing design maintains the overall lens length during operation and contributes to a lighter overall weight.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5/D4/D3 series, Df, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.
Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements afford protection to the optical system.

Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR Lens is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 151.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice lens Some of the reviews I read made me wary of this lens, but the time had come for me to buy a 24-70 zoom and I opted for the new lens rather than the old non-VR version. I'm glad I did. The VR is helpful in the contexts in which I use the lens (events, often low light), the autofocus is extremely fast and accurate, and sharpness is great after a bit of AF fine-tuning. (I've rented the non-VR 24-70 numerous times over the past few years, so I do have some context for comparison.) Having said all that, I would probably not upgrade if I already owned the old 24-70--the VR and autofocus improvements just don't seem worth the high price tag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Nikkor I have ever used I read a lot of mixed reviews on the 24-70mm f/2.8 VR. I must have owned a 100,Nikkor over time, and used even more, but this is the best lens I have used in terms of every aspect being just about perfect. The only two things are the size and weight, but welcome to all that glass. It accurately renders everything I've shot with perfection on my D810. Sharp, great realistic color and contrast, and awesome bokeh. It is a lot of money, but dang if it isn't a killer lens. The rendering of images is consistent with the 14-24mm f/2.8. If you need line charts and mtf ratings to buy a lens, I think you will be misled about this lens. It is just perfect for the real shooter.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Sent back Fast focusing, great color, vignette around all corners, soft, blurry images changed settings no change. The lens isn't heavy just the right size for a walk around lens. I had high hopes for this lens, I read all reviews, watched videos and read reviews on you tube I hesitated about purchasing lens due to some of the reviews I thought I would give it a shot anyway. If your not an experienced photographer you may not notice the negatives about this lens but owning several lens that deliver on what they say they can do believe me this lens doesn't deliver for the price and for Nikon's other great lens they have. I have a D810 just read all reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharper and Faster AF I had just bought the 24-70G, having just switched to Nikon. It was fine and produced beautiful images and was razor sharp in the center at 70mm. But reading reviews on this, I decided to give it a try. The 24-70E is sharper all across the frame and at every focal length. It's just a hair less sharp in the center at 70mm but the overall image sharpness across the frame has more detail, noticeable even when shooting at 2.8. The last straw was the AF speed - significantly faster on the D500 I had at the time. That was it. I use the lens daily and never question my decision.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality lens I use this lens mostly for landscape photography and low light shots. I owned the previous version and sold it to buy this lens. This lens has the same picture quality as the previous version but having the VR is priceless in low light, handheld situations. The lens is slightly larger and heavier than the previous version but this is not a real issue. The reason to buy this lens over the previous version is the VR. If you don't need the handheld low light capability then the upgrade is unnecessary but in most low light situations you can leave your tripod at home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW! Just 2 weeks before Christmas I was on a trip to Australia. While in Sydney, I stopped into a large camera store. I had my Nikon D750 with my 24-120mm f/4 lens with me. I took a series of photos with my lens, then I attached the new 24-70mm f/2.8 w/VR and took the same photos with the same settings. OMG! It was night and day. Santa came through with this new lens! I absolutely love it. The lens is super fast focus, extremely sharp and the VR makes a world of difference for me. And the service at B&H was sensational as always!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really a professional beast. I believe for its intended audience (pros) it is a 5 star performer. Many enthusiasts tend to purchase pro gear in search of better performance, but in this case, I don't think too many enthusiasts will be happy with the weight, size, and price of this lens. I already owned the previous non-vr version of this lens, and debated upgrading, but was willing to go for the VR lens in hopes of getting better low light performance. And, it does that well. I don't see any other performance improvement that would make it worth upgrading.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth It I've been waiting for this lenses for literally 4 years. I sent back 3 copies of the non-VR version and went without one because they weren't sharp enough shooting handheld for me. I am a fashion photographer, and having a 24-70 with VR allows for shooting handheld on location, or in the studio with the confidence that my images will be sharp. For years, I had to use 24, 35, and 50mm 1.4 primes instead. But seldom do I need 1.4 speed in those focal lengths, which made them quite unconvenient to use(I like wide apertures when I'm shooting 85, 135, and 200mm primes) and having a 24-70 with VR has made a big difference in my work.
