Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Overview

  • 1Description

Spanning a long, versatile zoom range, the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens from Nikon is a telephoto zoom characterized by a constant f/5.6 maximum aperture for consistent performance throughout the zoom range. The optical design incorporates three extra-low dispersion glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions for increased sharpness and color accuracy. Also contributing to improved image quality, a Super Integrated Coating has been applied to lens elements to lessen flare and ghosting for improved contrast and clarity.

A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to 4.5 shutter speed stops. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Designed for use with FX image sensors, this lens is also compatible with DX sensors where it will provide a 300-750mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/5.6 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range.
Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for up to 4.5 shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens' use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions where panning and other lateral camera movements are more common.
A rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod with either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.
Compatible with optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14, TC-17, and TC-20 teleconverters.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 590.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this lens and would buy it again I use this lens for bird and wildlife photo's. I had a Tamron 150-600mm lens but it did work well with my D7200. I had sent the Tamron into have the firmware updated and check the focus of the lens. They could not find a problem with the lens. So, I sent my D7200 to Nikon to see if the problem was with camera, they did some repairs to body and sent it back. I again tried to use the Tamron lens and results were a big disappointment. So, I bought this lens and I now get the results I had dreamed of. I have many great BIF photo's that I could never get with the Tamron. This lens has really delivered for the price and the extra weight has not been an issue for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lens I've been waiting for No gold ring but so far out shines Nikon's 80-400VR, at least for birding. Fast focus, super sharp at all focal lengths and apertures that we tried (5.6-13). VR is phenomenal - handheld @ 500mm 1/60 was usually sharp; 1/125 is reliably sharp. Weighs only 1.7 lbs more than Nikon's 300mm f/4 prime + TC14 (our previous favorite birding lens). Nice smooth bokeh. As others have said, its plastic, made in China, and probably not as rugged as the gold-ring lenses - but that's why it is light & reasonably priced. Ours arrived from B&H yesterday with the rubber gasket around the lens mount partially detached, but I was able to push it back in place.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast focus and near macro! I've been debating which long zoom to get for events that require travel. After playing with the Tamron & Sigma 150-600 lenses along with the Nikon 200-500, I chose the Nikon. Great decision. Focusing on oncoming race cars was accurate yielding images so sharp you can read small decals. A bonus happened at home photographing butterflies at less than 8 at 500mm. Very sharp and far enough away as to not annoy the insects. In a week it has become a fav lens. The only nits to pick is no strap lugs on the lens. Focus hold buttons would be nice too. But the quick AF and sharpness throughout the zoom range puts it right up with my faster and heavier Nikon 200-400 f/4.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from NIKKOR 200-500mm The reason for this review, I couldn't find a review of this lens on a Nikon D5200. I have the lens now and maybe I can help someone if they use a lesser expensive camera. This lens works Well with my D40 and great with the D5200, I also have a Nikon AF-S 70-300mm VR lens that works well for birds but it's said you can't have to much HP or to meany millimeters. To me the 200-500mm lens looks good, looks will made and not to bad to use. It does seem a little hefty without hand grip other than tripod stand, but then it is a Len's. I'm posting two pictures, one at 22 feet, one at 120 feet, both are handheld. B&H is the place to buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great addition to my arsenal Having just purchased this lense my experience is somewhat limited, however the results on my first shoot were most satisfactory,to me anyways, being a hobbyist my shots are for me to enjoy. I coupled this with a D500 and headed for the beach in the hopes of capturing sea birds,as at this time of the year most Florida birds head north for the summer. As luck would have it a falling tide presented me with egrets invading the pools in search of a quick snack and I was lucky enough to witness the slaughter as it happened. I intend to use this combo on the upcoming races at Daytona and other numerous sporting events around central Florida.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great option for birding for Amateurs & Hobbyists The 200-500mm/f5.6 is a great option for hobbyist and amateurs for birding. This is a heavy lens - make no mistake about it. A full day with this can certainly test you :) However you can still hand hold it and shoot good photographs with it. The quality of the pictures is great and this coupled with a FF body or a crop sensor body (birding) is a great combination. It gives you good range with this lens and f5.6 without teleconverters is a great option as you get complete flexibility of auto focus and focus points. As compared to the other options in the market this is a great option available at reasonable price points.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I hoped it would be I have the older version of the Nikon 80-400mm lens and I love it. It's been one of my favorites. But, even at 400 mm, it was not getting the job done and I needed to crop heavily in post to get the images I wanted. The 80-400 mm, does not except teleconverters. So, I purchased this lens, the 200-500mm zoom and a 1.4 teleconverter. They work together great. They are not too dark to use. The autofocus continues to work. Image stabilization works great. And, finally, I am getting the images I have been striving for, and the subject fills the frame without going all the way out to 700 mm. This lens is an absolute keeper and the price is an unbelievable deal. Very highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive Lens and Great Value I am not a professional photographer so I couldn't justify spending 6000.00 on a higher end lens so tried a Tamron 150-600mm. The Tamron didn't seem very sharp to me so I read a number of reviews about other lenses. When Nikon introduced the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens I waited a while and read a number of positive reviews by professional photographers as well as many user reviews so I decided to buy it. I haven't been disappointed. This lens gives me the extra zoom I wanted and is very sharp. I am very happy with the quality of images I am able to produce with this lens and the price.

So due to the recall, if we were to order it now, is it still recalled? Or did they fix it in the ones that just came out?

will this lense work with a D3100? If so is this a good fit to use at a race track with quick zoom shots at both day and night?
    Asked by: Anonymous
It would be an excellent choice for the race track with some pre-focusing at a spot on the track where you expect cars to be as they approach. By the time you add a 2x teleconverter to the 70-200mm lens you will have a f5.6 lens that will not focus as well as the 200-500mm lens.

has the firmware of the lenses you are selling now (november 13) been updated ?
    Asked by: ulrike w.
Unfortunately we do not have access to our inventory to be able to inspect the camera and the firmware version installed on it. It is not uncommon that from the time a camera leaves the manufacturer overseas and then arrives to the customer that a new firmware version may be released. Firmware updates are posted on manufacturers websites and are easy to perform. We always recommend that when receiving a new model camera, to check its firmware version to the most recent version posted on the manufacturers website.

I'm so happy to read that this lens is compatible with the D5200. I want a longer lens, but I'm not up to carrying a massive 600mm around the field. What are its dimensions, so I can find a good case for it? Also, what is the warranty on this lens?
    Asked by: Kat B.
This lens measures 4.25 x 10.53 and has a limited 1-year warranty with limited 4-year USA extension upon registration.

What country are these lens made?
    Asked by: Bruce P.
Mine was made in China. I will add it is a heavy lens and appears very well made/sturdy. I am also quite impressed with the picture quality, especially compared to the Sigma 150-500 lens I had been using. I recommend the lens very highly the only downsides are weight and starting at 200mm (300mm equivalent on a non full frame camera).
