Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Overview

By B&H Photo's

Spanning a long, versatile zoom range, the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens from Nikon is a telephoto zoom characterized by a constant f/5.6 maximum aperture for consistent performance throughout the zoom range. The optical design incorporates three extra-low dispersion glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions for increased sharpness and color accuracy. Also contributing to improved image quality, a Super Integrated Coating has been applied to lens elements to lessen flare and ghosting for improved contrast and clarity.

A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to 4.5 shutter speed stops. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Designed for use with FX image sensors, this lens is also compatible with DX sensors where it will provide a 300-750mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/5.6 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range.
Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for up to 4.5 shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens' use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions where panning and other lateral camera movements are more common.
A rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod with either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

The following cameras are compatible with this lens: D5, D4 series, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Reviews

Perfect Lens for Outdoor Sports

I shoot high school sports for a magazine I edit and have labored the last couple of years with my beloved 70-200mm Nikkor. Adding this lens to my bag has leveled up my game in a huge way for spring sports. It's the perfect in-between lens for those who can't afford Nikon's top-tier lenses (like the $7K 200-400mm f/4G or the $10K 500mm 4E for example). It's really limited under bad lighting...but perfect for daylight sports.

I bought the Nikon 200-500 5.6 so I would have the reach for those times when you just can't get close enough. As with all Nikon products, this lens is well crafted and nice to use. I caught this lens on sale here at B&H and as always quick shipping. I plan to get lots of use out of this lens this year since I just retired.

I've been eyeing this since it came out. Photography is just an expensive hobby and I haven't been able to justify this purchase. It was on sale around New Years and I just had to get it. I'm glad I did. I've only taken a handful of shots with it. I'm looking forward to using it this year.

Great Lens

My wife wanted me to start photographing birds and get away from what I have been photographing for 40 plus years. The problem with photographing birds is that no matter what lens you have you want something longer, so I have gone with the 200mm to 500mm lens and I got the 2X Nikon converter as well. Unfortunately the 2X converter does not always play well with the lens, and sometimes will not auto focus. There is a small note about this in the manuals. This drove me to try out the manual focus. Wow!!! a lens that you can still focus by hand easily. It works great in manual. My other lens are difficult to manually focus, but this lens has a very easy focusing ring, just like the lens of old where you were required to use a focus ring. When I use the lens without the teleconverter it works well in auto focus as well as the wonderful manual focus. The lens has a lot of glass in it so it is a tad heavy but that comes with its length. Nice lens.

Best purchase I ever made

I just used my new lens for the first time while snowmobiling in Yellowstone. The pictures I took look fantastic and certainly came in hand because the animals were all at a distance and the lens handled it like a pro. If you're wondering if it's worth the price just ask yourself how much you enjoy wild life photography and if you really enjoy it then the answer is buy this.

I took this lens out bird-watching to see if it was going to work for me. I was surprised that I was able to get sharp photos of ducks in flight even with no tripod and no experience using a 500mm lens. This photo is hand held panning as the ducks flew by. The lens is a keeper.

Heavy, but works great!

I use this lens with a Nikon D7500 mostly for birding. Great reach with an APS-C EFL of 750mm. I like it best stopped down to F8. Autofocus performance is fine - If I miss a pic, it's on me. It is heavy but on par with similar offerings from other brands. For the pictures I get, I am more than happy to carry it around.

Why did I wait so long?

I've had the lens for two weeks now and wish that I bought it years ago. What an amazing lens! This is going to become my go-to lens for wildlife and sports (my grandchildren) shooting

question

will this lense work with a D3100? If so is this a good fit to use at a race track with quick zoom shots at both day and night?
Asked by: Anonymous
It would be an excellent choice for the race track with some pre-focusing at a spot on the track where you expect cars to be as they approach. By the time you add a 2x teleconverter to the 70-200mm lens you will have a f5.6 lens that will not focus as well as the 200-500mm lens.

Can a teleconverter be used with this lens on a Z6ii?
Asked by: Nancy
Yes, you can attach the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III to Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens and the Nikon FTZ II Mount Adapter to the Nikon Z6 II Mirrorless Camera. The focus will turned slighly slower but it will provide consistent tracking and face detection.

question

has the firmware of the lenses you are selling now (november 13) been updated ?
Asked by: ulrike w.
Unfortunately we do not have access to our inventory to be able to inspect the camera and the firmware version installed on it. It is not uncommon that from the time a camera leaves the manufacturer overseas and then arrives to the customer that a new firmware version may be released. Firmware updates are posted on manufacturers websites and are easy to perform. We always recommend that when receiving a new model camera, to check its firmware version to the most recent version posted on the manufacturers website.
