Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Overview

By B&H Photo's

Spanning a long, versatile zoom range, the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens from Nikon is a telephoto zoom characterized by a constant f/5.6 maximum aperture for consistent performance throughout the zoom range. The optical design incorporates three extra-low dispersion glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions for increased sharpness and color accuracy. Also contributing to improved image quality, a Super Integrated Coating has been applied to lens elements to lessen flare and ghosting for improved contrast and clarity.

A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to 4.5 shutter speed stops. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Designed for use with FX image sensors, this lens is also compatible with DX sensors where it will provide a 300-750mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/5.6 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range.
Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for up to 4.5 shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens' use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions where panning and other lateral camera movements are more common.
A rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod with either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

The following cameras are compatible with this lens: D5, D4 series, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Second time purchasing in past 7 months. Both lens locked up at 400

Opened up a whole new world of photography for me.

This lens has made nature photography an entirely new experience for me. For the past 21 months this lens has rarely left my D750 and it has performed flawlessly. The combined the two weigh is about 7.5 pounds, but that is manageable. The reach and flexibility this lens offers is terrific. Moving from 200mm to 500mm is a little more than a single twist, but this is a small inconvenience and I've adapted. This lens gives me the ability to capture close, crisp images of wildlife at a reasonable price. The vibration reduction and constant f/5.6 is a big plus at 500mm in dim, early morning light. (The D750 plays a role here, as it is exceptional in low light situations.) When I set up at a location I will use a tripod, but most of the time I shoot hand-held. It is quick to focus. Any sluggishness is probably a user issue (e.g., me.) It has had no trouble with continuous shooting. My D750, however, tops out at 6 fps. It is a great lens and if/when I move to mirrorless, I will continue to use it with an adapter. B&H was helpful, as always, and it arrived in three days.

Great Lens!

Got this puppy for wildlife shots at Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. It's got some weight but a tradeoff for the zoom range.

It's a great lens...but

The lens has good reach when it's zoomed all the way out. When you're wearing a ghillie suit with lens and tripod covered with a dozen eagles in front of you, you'll wish it was a little easier twisting the lens to zoom in. The autofocus is quick and accurate. The downside to this lens is the f stop but I knew this when I was buying it. When the birds or wildlife are showing up before full daylight or at dusk you will not be photographing them until it gets brighter. But you'll get good clear photos at a fraction of the cost of a 500 mm lens. And purchase and delivery from B&H was easy and quick, I had it in a couple of days. Great buy.

I have 2 of these and while I think they do a great photography job both have had to be sent for repair at less than a year old. I think they should be better than that!

Very good

question

will this lense work with a D3100? If so is this a good fit to use at a race track with quick zoom shots at both day and night?
Asked by: Anonymous
It would be an excellent choice for the race track with some pre-focusing at a spot on the track where you expect cars to be as they approach. By the time you add a 2x teleconverter to the 70-200mm lens you will have a f5.6 lens that will not focus as well as the 200-500mm lens.

Can a teleconverter be used with this lens on a Z6ii?
Asked by: Nancy
Yes, you can attach the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III to Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens and the Nikon FTZ II Mount Adapter to the Nikon Z6 II Mirrorless Camera. The focus will turned slighly slower but it will provide consistent tracking and face detection.

question

has the firmware of the lenses you are selling now (november 13) been updated ?
Asked by: ulrike w.
Unfortunately we do not have access to our inventory to be able to inspect the camera and the firmware version installed on it. It is not uncommon that from the time a camera leaves the manufacturer overseas and then arrives to the customer that a new firmware version may be released. Firmware updates are posted on manufacturers websites and are easy to perform. We always recommend that when receiving a new model camera, to check its firmware version to the most recent version posted on the manufacturers website.
