Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Overview

By B&H Photo's

Spanning a long, versatile zoom range, the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens from Nikon is a telephoto zoom characterized by a constant f/5.6 maximum aperture for consistent performance throughout the zoom range. The optical design incorporates three extra-low dispersion glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions for increased sharpness and color accuracy. Also contributing to improved image quality, a Super Integrated Coating has been applied to lens elements to lessen flare and ghosting for improved contrast and clarity.

A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to 4.5 shutter speed stops. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Designed for use with FX image sensors, this lens is also compatible with DX sensors where it will provide a 300-750mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/5.6 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range.
Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for up to 4.5 shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens' use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions where panning and other lateral camera movements are more common.
A rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod with either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

The following cameras are compatible with this lens: D5, D4 series, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

I have 2 of these and while I think they do a great photography job both have had to be sent for repair at less than a year old. I think they should be better than that!

Big bang, for not so much buck !

While this lens is on the heavy side ( mono pod is very helpful, for this older guy, on lengthy sessions) It snaps to focus, & is sharp. Currently using on front of FTZ2 & a Z9. In my case, this is money well spent, to give me reach in sports & wildlife ( or anything else to reach out to.) On shorter sessions, i do hand hold it

Sharp lens, a classic but...

This lens is sharp when you get the right photo but it lacks fast focusing. I will push the back button and press the shutter to focus in Auto mode. It doesn't always focus on a bird, it seems to get stuck or doesn't focus fast enough. When it does, it's great but I would also say it's 50/50. I would give it 3 1/2 to 4 stars.

Solid addition to the bag.

This lens is tack sharp when the focus is locked on, and having the ability to punch in or stay out at 200mm is a nice feature. Thanks to B&H for being quick and smooth with everything!

This lens is exactly what I was expecting, it is heavy and big, but awesome reach and sharp.

Excellent lens for wildlife photography

I received this lens 6 days ago and put it through its paces today shooting birds in our backyard on a D800. The lens worked right out of the box with VR, auto focus, and auto exposure all performing as I expected. It's a bit heavy for hand holding for long periods of time, so I've mostly worked with a tripod so far. The attached photo of a blue jay was shot on a tripod at maximum focal length (500mm) and spot metering. The subject was 25-30' from the camera. I am very pleased with the image quality, and look forward to doing a lot of wildlife photography with this lens.

Great price

Purchased lens to supplement my 300mm f4 lens for sports photography. Great price but a little heavy to hand hold. May consider buying a better lens case then just the bag that comes with the lens.

Just what I was looking for!

I did a lot of research before I made the purchase. The team at B&H were very helpful in making the final decision. This is so sharp - just as I had hoped. I looked and looked at other lenses, but I got a great price and good advice, so I went with the Nikon. I can use it easily without a monopod or tripod. The 5.6 works fine for my sports and wildlife work. Everyone is different but for the money I really feel this is a good buy.

question

will this lense work with a D3100? If so is this a good fit to use at a race track with quick zoom shots at both day and night?
Asked by: Anonymous
It would be an excellent choice for the race track with some pre-focusing at a spot on the track where you expect cars to be as they approach. By the time you add a 2x teleconverter to the 70-200mm lens you will have a f5.6 lens that will not focus as well as the 200-500mm lens.

Can a teleconverter be used with this lens on a Z6ii?
Asked by: Nancy
Yes, you can attach the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III to Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens and the Nikon FTZ II Mount Adapter to the Nikon Z6 II Mirrorless Camera. The focus will turned slighly slower but it will provide consistent tracking and face detection.

question

has the firmware of the lenses you are selling now (november 13) been updated ?
Asked by: ulrike w.
Unfortunately we do not have access to our inventory to be able to inspect the camera and the firmware version installed on it. It is not uncommon that from the time a camera leaves the manufacturer overseas and then arrives to the customer that a new firmware version may be released. Firmware updates are posted on manufacturers websites and are easy to perform. We always recommend that when receiving a new model camera, to check its firmware version to the most recent version posted on the manufacturers website.
