Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Overview

By B&H Photo's

Spanning a long, versatile zoom range, the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens from Nikon is a telephoto zoom characterized by a constant f/5.6 maximum aperture for consistent performance throughout the zoom range. The optical design incorporates three extra-low dispersion glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions for increased sharpness and color accuracy. Also contributing to improved image quality, a Super Integrated Coating has been applied to lens elements to lessen flare and ghosting for improved contrast and clarity.

A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to 4.5 shutter speed stops. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Designed for use with FX image sensors, this lens is also compatible with DX sensors where it will provide a 300-750mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/5.6 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range.
Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for up to 4.5 shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens' use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions where panning and other lateral camera movements are more common.
A rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod with either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

The following cameras are compatible with this lens: D5, D4 series, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

I purchased the lens ahead of a safari in Botswana in August along with a Z6II. I have test-driven the lens/camera and first impressions are these are great products and should be perfect for the nature photography intended.

This is a fantastic lens. Very sharp, quick to focus and really brings wildlife in. While you can handhold it, at 500mm it is difficult to hold steady. The extreme magnification makes it almost impossible to pan on a target. Best used on a tripod. It is a very heavy lens, you are not going to hang it on your belt! I'm using it on my d3500 and d750. No difference in sharpness, contrast, etc. Hard to go wrong at this price for those long distance shots.

Why bother with Tamron or Sigma?

This has to be the best value in consumer ultra-tele zooms. It's surprisingly sharp, the ergonomics aren't bad, and yes, Virginia, it goes all the way out to 500mm. Especially for hobbyists with APS-C-sized sensor bodies (750mm equivalent) that's more than enough for just about any wildlife photography (or spycraft!) you can think of. It is heavy, though. A decent monopod or a tripod with a good gimbal head is worth it. A word about AF: when the AF is pretty close to the target, it's pretty fast; it's only slow covering huge distances. If that's not a problem for you (it's not for me) then it's easy to describe the AF as pretty fast. Personally, I wouldn't bother with the 500pf, an excellent lens which is sharper, professionally built, and lighter. It's more than twice the price, and the bokeh is pretty harsh. The bokeh on the 200-500 is actually pretty decent (better than that in the 500pf). It's not a bad portrait lens by any means. Since this lens is not anywhere near fast (max aperture is f/5.6), you'll need plenty of light, and probably sunlight if you're out in the wild. Because of that a circular polarizing filter is highly recommended. It's worth getting a big one (this lens takes 95mm filters) because you can just use step-down rings for your smaller lenses (though you likely won't be able to use the lens hood).

While I have only had this lens a short while and have only been able to take a few test shots, it performs very well. It is sharp through the entire zoom range. I am using it on a Nikon Z6 with the FTZ adapter and I find that it focuses pretty quickly. I am very happy with this lens.

question

will this lense work with a D3100? If so is this a good fit to use at a race track with quick zoom shots at both day and night?
Asked by: Anonymous
It would be an excellent choice for the race track with some pre-focusing at a spot on the track where you expect cars to be as they approach. By the time you add a 2x teleconverter to the 70-200mm lens you will have a f5.6 lens that will not focus as well as the 200-500mm lens.

Can a teleconverter be used with this lens on a Z6ii?
Asked by: Nancy
Yes, you can attach the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III to Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens and the Nikon FTZ II Mount Adapter to the Nikon Z6 II Mirrorless Camera. The focus will turned slighly slower but it will provide consistent tracking and face detection.

question

has the firmware of the lenses you are selling now (november 13) been updated ?
Asked by: ulrike w.
Unfortunately we do not have access to our inventory to be able to inspect the camera and the firmware version installed on it. It is not uncommon that from the time a camera leaves the manufacturer overseas and then arrives to the customer that a new firmware version may be released. Firmware updates are posted on manufacturers websites and are easy to perform. We always recommend that when receiving a new model camera, to check its firmware version to the most recent version posted on the manufacturers website.
