Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Overview

By B&H Photo's

Spanning a long, versatile zoom range, the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens from Nikon is a telephoto zoom characterized by a constant f/5.6 maximum aperture for consistent performance throughout the zoom range. The optical design incorporates three extra-low dispersion glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions for increased sharpness and color accuracy. Also contributing to improved image quality, a Super Integrated Coating has been applied to lens elements to lessen flare and ghosting for improved contrast and clarity.

A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to 4.5 shutter speed stops. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Designed for use with FX image sensors, this lens is also compatible with DX sensors where it will provide a 300-750mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/5.6 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range.
Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for up to 4.5 shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens' use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions where panning and other lateral camera movements are more common.
A rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod with either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

The following cameras are compatible with this lens: D5, D4 series, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Reviews

For the cost you can't beat it!

Bought this lens for a month long trip to Alaska and it was great! It has very fast continuous focus on Bald Eagles in flight and very hand hold able even at 500mm. I'm very pleased with its performance. Photos below of bear was hand held at 1/250 F14 ISO 500 on a D850. Cropped at 100% so you can see sharpness. Eagle in flight was shot hand held tracking bird at 1/1600 F11 ISO 400. Both processed in DXO Photolab 5 using lens corrections and DeepPrime noise reduction.

Great value. Sharp images

Using this with my D500 for bird photography. I'm getting sharp results both handheld and on gimbal.

My First Telephoto Zoom Lens

I've used this lens daily for about a month on a D3500 body. This really stepped my game up with wildlife photography. I've captured excellent quality bird pictures which is what I bought it for. For the price you can't beat it if you don't want to spend 10k on a telephoto zoom lens. I'm by no way a pro photographer, but even as a rookie I am able to pull off some great shots. I like the lens so much I am now looking to upgrade my camera body.

So far so great!

I've come to believe that some reviews need written a few years after using a product, not a few days or weeks, but at B&H's request, here goes. Awhile back I needed this lens but it was out of stock so I got the Sig 150-600. It takes good images but has quit on me twice. It was repaired under warranty promptly, but that's another story. When it quit the second time I ordered the 200-500 Nikon for use on the D500 and D750. It honestly seems a better sharper lens and the magnification seems higher that the Sig on the same MM, but I can't support that claim. I've used it on both Nikons and am satisfied with the results just as I am with about any new product I've bought from B&H except the 2x Canon extender. I think I'd tend to recommend this over the Sigma, but in all fairness it's early in the game.

I heard so many good things, I had to try it...

I don't know how it's so good for the price, but I do know I'm very happy with it. A quick Internet search for images from this lens will show you what it can do. The VR will astound you: hand-held shots at 500mm and ridiculously low shutter speeds are icing on the cake.

Best wildlife lens, especially at this price.

The lens is wonderful, but the tripod was incredibly heavy. I ended up purchasing a separate tripod that was easier to pack.

question

will this lense work with a D3100? If so is this a good fit to use at a race track with quick zoom shots at both day and night?
Asked by: Anonymous
It would be an excellent choice for the race track with some pre-focusing at a spot on the track where you expect cars to be as they approach. By the time you add a 2x teleconverter to the 70-200mm lens you will have a f5.6 lens that will not focus as well as the 200-500mm lens.

Can a teleconverter be used with this lens on a Z6ii?
Asked by: Nancy
Yes, you can attach the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III to Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens and the Nikon FTZ II Mount Adapter to the Nikon Z6 II Mirrorless Camera. The focus will turned slighly slower but it will provide consistent tracking and face detection.

question

has the firmware of the lenses you are selling now (november 13) been updated ?
Asked by: ulrike w.
Unfortunately we do not have access to our inventory to be able to inspect the camera and the firmware version installed on it. It is not uncommon that from the time a camera leaves the manufacturer overseas and then arrives to the customer that a new firmware version may be released. Firmware updates are posted on manufacturers websites and are easy to perform. We always recommend that when receiving a new model camera, to check its firmware version to the most recent version posted on the manufacturers website.
