Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Overview

Spanning a long, versatile zoom range, the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens from Nikon is a telephoto zoom characterized by a constant f/5.6 maximum aperture for consistent performance throughout the zoom range. The optical design incorporates three extra-low dispersion glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions for increased sharpness and color accuracy. Also contributing to improved image quality, a Super Integrated Coating has been applied to lens elements to lessen flare and ghosting for improved contrast and clarity.

A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to 4.5 shutter speed stops. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Designed for use with FX image sensors, this lens is also compatible with DX sensors where it will provide a 300-750mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/5.6 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range.
Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for up to 4.5 shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens' use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions where panning and other lateral camera movements are more common.
A rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod with either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.
Compatible with optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14, TC-17, and TC-20 teleconverters.

Awesome Lens!

As an aviation and nature photographer, I've wanted this lens in my collection for some time. It's a great lens with superior quality. It is long and heavy, so keep that in mind if you're going to be using it for long lengths of time. I highly recommend this lens.

I like it a lot. At the very competitive price, it gives me convenience to choose anywhere between 200-500mm with really good VR and overall pictures quality.

I have been looking at this lens for a few yrs and when the Black friday sale came this yr, I took the plunge and so happy I did! I have only had the opportunity to go out 1 time since receiving the lens but I am amazed at the quality and clarity of the photo's in the full range of the lens and wide open. Yes the lens is heavy but the weight doesn't bother me at all. I upgraded from the Tamron 150-600 G1 model and WOW what a difference...so glad I took the plunge and purchased this lens.

I have been wanting a super lens like this for a long time. It took my 300mm to go missing to get this. Tried it today and it's far more than I had wished for. Now to wrap it,eventually scope out some snowy white owls on the beach.

I've only add a limited opportunity to use the lens, but the image quality is excellent. The lens focuses quickly, and the images are sharp.

I purchased this lens in a wildlife kit (lens, tripod, and gimbal head), This is my second large telephoto lens. I really like how it operates, smooth and fast. I have used it for night photography and wildlife shots. What a treat. I highly recommend this lens.

Works great on my Z6

The lens works great on my Z6 with the adapter and I haven't had any problems with the autofocus. The large size and weight isn't a problem with a monopod. So far, the only challenge has been when shooting video. The zoom ring feels a bit stiff and challenging to smoothly zoom in/out. But, some of that I'm sure is due to my skill level.

Definitely worth it!

Wow! Upgrade from 300mm Nikon zoom. Using for birds and other wildlife with an outdated Nikon D70. Dramatic improvement. Fast, great, silent auto focus. Plus it's heavy enough that I've been able to skip my arm days. A great value and the best purchase I've made in decades. If you're wondering if it's worth it, it definitely yes!

question

will this lense work with a D3100? If so is this a good fit to use at a race track with quick zoom shots at both day and night?
Asked by: Anonymous
It would be an excellent choice for the race track with some pre-focusing at a spot on the track where you expect cars to be as they approach. By the time you add a 2x teleconverter to the 70-200mm lens you will have a f5.6 lens that will not focus as well as the 200-500mm lens.

question

has the firmware of the lenses you are selling now (november 13) been updated ?
Asked by: ulrike w.
Unfortunately we do not have access to our inventory to be able to inspect the camera and the firmware version installed on it. It is not uncommon that from the time a camera leaves the manufacturer overseas and then arrives to the customer that a new firmware version may be released. Firmware updates are posted on manufacturers websites and are easy to perform. We always recommend that when receiving a new model camera, to check its firmware version to the most recent version posted on the manufacturers website.
