Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Overview

By B&H Photo's

Spanning a long, versatile zoom range, the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens from Nikon is a telephoto zoom characterized by a constant f/5.6 maximum aperture for consistent performance throughout the zoom range. The optical design incorporates three extra-low dispersion glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions for increased sharpness and color accuracy. Also contributing to improved image quality, a Super Integrated Coating has been applied to lens elements to lessen flare and ghosting for improved contrast and clarity.

A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to 4.5 shutter speed stops. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Designed for use with FX image sensors, this lens is also compatible with DX sensors where it will provide a 300-750mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/5.6 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range.
Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for up to 4.5 shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens' use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions where panning and other lateral camera movements are more common.
A rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod with either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

The following cameras are compatible with this lens: D5, D4 series, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

This really was needed...

For twelve years I've shot a D700 and my longest lens was the 70-200 which is an excellent lens. It just wasn't long legged enough for what I needed it for. I'd looked at long primes for years, but when this less expensive lens went on sale I decided to bite the bullet and get what would ultimately work for me... Thus far it's been a great lens. No it's not the fastest on the block, but it's also considerably less expensive than those fast lenses. Now if I was out shooting birds I'd be getting the prime 500mm or longer. But thats not what I'm doing with it so why not save a little money.

I will keep it simple. This is the best sub $1500 wildlife lens you can buy for your nikon dslr, or even z mirrorless. Pros: - IQ is SHARP! It really produces some brilliantly sharp images. - VR is very good, I successfully keep grabbing panning shots of birds upto 1/600 of a sec for my shutter speed, I find many keepers. 1/800 upwards it just gets better. Don't listen to anyone who says otherwise, it's ABSOLUTE USER ERROR! - The build quality is good, the focus ring is smooth. Buttons for manual/AF, VR is always a plus. - At this price point you would be hard pressed to find a better wildlife semipro lens! - for 5.6 it produces beautiful bokeh, especially when close to your subject and at 500mm, the compression is just buttery smooth! Cons- - heavy, get ready for a workout, if you're planning to handhold, and in my opinion this causes most problems for people missing focus. Get yourself a tripod, a gimbal head tripod and you will unlock its real potential! - there is no weather sealing, if you want weather sealing you need to go for the 500 PF, coz that and weight is the only main areas where the PF 5.6 has a leg up. That being said I have used mine in the rain, not torrential downpour but in light rain and no issues. just don't keep changing focal length otherwise you will be pushing water into the lens barrel. Save yourself the headache get a good lens rain cover and you will be fine! (FTZii is weather sealed FYI) - the filter thread size, is a pain, 95mm is huge, and cumbersome to even store and carry in a bag, or a lens filter pouch. But you Get yourself a good ND and guess what it takes some very good video. Biggest point for anyone considering this with a Z system. I use this only with my z6ii and let me tell you it's performed beyond my expectations with the ftzii. The Z system just takes this to a whole new height, coz yes the f5.6 is tad high, but with the lowlight capability of the z6ii I can push upto 12800 iso in some cases and get some great shots. I cannot stress how much better this is then the 150-600 sigma or tamron, those lenses are never going to outperform a native lens, even on a Z system. Also for the third party lens you need to buy a separate tap in console to update the lens, extra purchase. WATCH B&H for price drops, I picked up this baby at $1000 when it was on sale! And it was practically a steal!! The only way I would replace this when the 200-600 Z lens releases, because that with a 1.4TC would be my next upgrade. Unless that lens is also not weather sealed, in which case I would opt for the 500 PF. And it would be only for this reason, the weather sealing. For me its constant rain as I live in Brazil, for now while a rain cover does do well its just cumbersome for zooming in and out with the rain cover on. It can scare off birds at times, especially owls and hummingbirds.

I've waited and saved and was finally able to get this lens. After all of the positive reviews I've read, the lens is truly a great lens paired with my D500. I think the combo is perfect. Although heavier than I'm used to, it does make it feel like a very solid lens. I'm finally able to get into wildlife photography as I've never had such a powerful zoom before. The lens is sharp all around. When zoomed all the way in, the image stabilization kicks in and the picture literally freezes. I was very impressed! I am very happy with the purchase and you will be also.

The Most Versatile Sport and Wildlife Lens Ever Made!

Intro: I got this lens summer of 2020, but didn't start using it until late 2020. I have been using this lens with the Nikon D7100 (DX Size sensor) which means this lens is actually a 300-750mm f/5.6. Design: Coming in at a whopping 5lbs this lens is heavy, but it feels light in the hand and it is well balanced even at 500. The zoom ring does require a lot of movement to get form 200 to 500. The Focus ring is smooth and easy to move. If you want to use a filter for this lens you will need to get a 95mm filter which can cost up to $500. This lens comes with a lens hood that twists on the the front of the lens and can be flipped around reversed to save space, however this hood can fall off if you bump it. The tripod color is comfortable to hold and is super sturdy, it has a small indent when it is vertical and horizontal which can be useful, the one downside to this foot is the way it comes off. It is too easy to slide off if the color is unlocked. Usability: This lens will work with any F-Mount cameras and the FTZ (1 & 2) adapter, as well as the older film cameras with the F-Mount. All of the switches are easy to use even with gloves on. The lens has a minimum focus distance of 7.22' (2.2m) which allows you to get macro photos VR: This lens has a really great VR system, I am able to handhold this lens even at 500mm and still get sharp shots even at 1/200th I will mostly use the sport mode for wildlife and action shots and I'll use the normal mode for stay shot where the camera isn't moving. Features/Specs: Focal length: 200-500mm (300-750mm in DX mode) Maximum Aperture: f/5.6 Minimum Aperture: f/32 Lens Format coverage: Full-Frame Dimensions ( x L): 4.25 x 10.53 / 108 x 267.5 mm Length at Maximum Extension: 13.5 / 343 mm Weight: 5.07 lb / 2.3 kg Conclusion: This is an Amazing lens for all types of photography, but it excels in sport and wildlife photography. I would recommend this lens for anyone who wants to get in to supper-telephoto photography but not breaking the bank.

I live in the new Middle Ground Between DSLR & New Mirrorless camera bodies. I am pleased with the newer Nikon Z6II, but when it comes to lenses...! I was really considering purchasing a Nikon Lens multiplier, luckily this lens popped up. Once on a full-size Nikon D8XX I remember why I went that way. This is truly a Super Telephoto Lens. Exceeds all expectations in Every Catagory. Fast, Clear, Great for anything on todays great ISO bodies, f5.6 is really very usable in Sun Light to Sun Set!

I've only used it for a few days (less than a week). My first thought was, hmm it seems heavier than my old lens Well, okay, it turns out it's less than 1000 grams heavier. But after 3 days of carrying it around, so what! Then I note, it focuses faster and better image sharpness is visible from the get go. Geez! Why did I wait so long to get this jewel?

question

will this lense work with a D3100? If so is this a good fit to use at a race track with quick zoom shots at both day and night?
Asked by: Anonymous
It would be an excellent choice for the race track with some pre-focusing at a spot on the track where you expect cars to be as they approach. By the time you add a 2x teleconverter to the 70-200mm lens you will have a f5.6 lens that will not focus as well as the 200-500mm lens.

Can a teleconverter be used with this lens on a Z6ii?
Asked by: Nancy
Yes, you can attach the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III to Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens and the Nikon FTZ II Mount Adapter to the Nikon Z6 II Mirrorless Camera. The focus will turned slighly slower but it will provide consistent tracking and face detection.

question

has the firmware of the lenses you are selling now (november 13) been updated ?
Asked by: ulrike w.
Unfortunately we do not have access to our inventory to be able to inspect the camera and the firmware version installed on it. It is not uncommon that from the time a camera leaves the manufacturer overseas and then arrives to the customer that a new firmware version may be released. Firmware updates are posted on manufacturers websites and are easy to perform. We always recommend that when receiving a new model camera, to check its firmware version to the most recent version posted on the manufacturers website.
