Nikon 24mm f/1.8 overview

  • 1Description

The AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.8G ED Lens rounds out Nikon's series of f/1.8 primes that blend both a versatile fixed focal length with a bright maximum aperture. This wide-angle lens incorporates two aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion elements to compensate for chromatic aberrations and distortions in order to render sharp, clear imagery. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to lens elements in order to reduce flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy.

Complementing the optical design is a Silent Wave Motor, which contributes to fast, quiet autofocus performance. Its rear focusing design further enables quick, exacting focus control and full-time manual focus override is possible by simply turning the focus ring in any mode.

Designed for use with FX image sensors, this lens is also compatible with DX sensors where it will provide a 36mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture supports working in low-light conditions and also enables greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field imagery.
Two extra-low dispersion glass elements and two aspherical elements help to minimize chromatic aberrations and distortions in order to maintain a high degree of sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy.
Silent Wave Motor autofocus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance that is ideal for both stills and video applications.
Full-time manual focus override allows instant switching between AF and MF focusing systems by just rotating the focus ring at any time.
Rear focusing system solely moves the rear lens group during focusing, offers fast focusing speeds, and maintains the overall lens length during operation.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.

Nikon 24mm f/1.8 reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.8G ED Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 38.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a really nice wide angle lens I recently moved to the D810 and need some better quality lens for this camera. My first purchase was an AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G. To complement that, I chose the AF-S Nikkor 24mm f/1.8G as my wide angle lens. It has been a really good choice. I mainly shoot landscapes, and the added width enables me to add vistas without using Hugin as much. The images are sharp with no flaring or distortion. I have yet to use this lens indoors, but the fast lens speed enables me to get great landscapes in very low light. I am looking forward to using this in different environments to see the results. So far, so good.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sharpest lens I own This is probably the sharpest lens that I own. It's remarkably good even wide open, very good at f/2.8 and pretty much tack sharp edge-to-edge at f/4 on my D800. Only the extreme corners still show a little softness. Overall I am very impressed with this lens. My sample required a lot of AF fine tune to focus properly however. I ended up setting it to +14. At the default setting maybe one out of five shows came out sharp. This is the only lens I own that requires AF fine tune. I sent the lens in to Nikon Service for adjustment, but they claimed nothing was wrong with it. So the AF accuracy is something to watch out for. Also, the 72mm filter diameter is inconvenient.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Wide Right now, not having had it long, I would rate at 5 stars. I have only shot a couple of assignments with this lens. The images look great. I have a Nikkor 17-35 2.8 that has been a workhorse. I still use it, but it is a heavy beast. I will continue to use it when I need something that wide. But, this is my new wide. It is sharp. It is light, at least much lighter than the 17-35. Like I said, so far, the shots look great. I am not a pixel peeper. I am not planning on doing an in-depth scientific study of this lens compared to others. I am a shooter. I want quality; this delivers. It does seem mostly plastic, but the glass is what matters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A wonderful small, light and very sharp lens I bought this lens to supplement my Nikon 14-24/2.8 and 24-70/2.8 zoom lenses as well as my 28/1.8 lens. Whenever feasible, I prefer primes to zooms for their (generally) better optical quality, small size and weight. The Nikon 24/1.8 does not disappoint. It resolves beautifully the entire frame on a D810, is sharper and faster than the two zooms and a tad more so than the 28/2.8 (which I have used extensively, much more so than the zooms). Price wise, it is a steal. Highly recommended to lovers of primes; may be an overkill to those who prefer zooms for all occasions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Continues the tradition of optical excellence I have waited for this lens for a long time. I sold my 24-70 f/2.8 because I needed the cash and had all the focal lengths covered by that lens other than 24mm. I tried the Sigma 24 f/1.4, but what a mess the images were from that! I could not get it to focus properly and the flare was bad. So I shipped it back to B&H and continued to wait for Nikon's new lens to come into stock. I did a quick test of the lens around the house and then a walk around town with it. I easily meets my expectations of continuing the tradition of the other excellent 1.8 lenses from Nikon: the 20mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm. My photojournalism kit of 24/35/50/85 is completed with this purchase. The lens is sharp from 1.8 and by 4-5.6 really shines. If you've been thinking about getting this lens, don't hesitate. It is up to par for any professional task and much less expensive than the 1.4. Colors are great, flare is very, very well controlled and the sharpness is on equal with the 20.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stellar Performance This compact, lightweight little jewel produces images far beyond my expectations. A series of flat field shots with lots of detail at about a meter produced very sharp images to edge of the FX frame (D600). At f1.8 the sharpness was already remarkable right to the edge with very little distortion and stopping down showed a slight, almost imperceptible improvement, but at f4 the detail really pops. The center detail, I would say equals the Sigma f1.4art lens, but the Nikon surpasses the Sigma at the edges. The included sample shots (please forgive the creepy selfie) are straight out of the camera jpegs with a slight crop and no other post processing (image #1 at f5.6, image #2 at f2). As you can see, the lack of distortion is worth mentioning again. As a, not totally relevant, note (unless you are deciding between this lens and the Nikon 18-35 G lens), at f1.8 this 24mm prime bests the 18-35 at 24mm and f5.6, and I have been very pleased with the IQ of the zoom. My copy of the 24mm f1.8G is right on the mark with AF accuracy and required no adjustment on my D600.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Sharp! Very sharp lens with great color! I use it mainly for landscape photos and it works flawlessly with my D810.
