Gitzo GK2542-82QD Mountaineer Series 2 Tripod... Overview

The GK2542-82QD Mountaineer Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripod from Gitzo features Carbon eXact tubing, which includes High Modulus carbon fiber in the lower leg sections, adding to their diameters and making the tripod more rigid and stronger than its predecessor. The tripod has a load capacity of 44.1 lb, extends to a maximum height of 70.9", and folds down to 27" for storage and transport.

The center column on the tripod can be removed for Ground Level Set, which enables the tripod to reach its lowest height of 10.9". Its 4-section legs are secured with G-lock Ultra twist locks, which feature internal O-rings to prevent dust and particles from entering the leg system. The top spider has been redesigned to add rigidity and large leg angle selectors give you more area to grip when readjusting leg positions. A ballast hook on the bottom of the center column allows the user to add additional weight, increasing the tripod's stability.

The included Gitzo Center Ball Head is an Arca-type compatible head that features two separate locks; one for 360° panning and another to control the movement of the ball. A tungsten disulfide coating on the ball helps keep the ball movement smooth and minimizes stick-slip. A screw-knob lock tightens down on the included quick release plate and a bubble level helps you maintain straight horizons in your images. A friction control dial has also been integrated into the large locking knob to allow for more precise adjustments.

A good tripod makes difference in photography. This is one of those good tripods, and there is nothing I could find negative about this tripod. It is built quality and rigid, and will last for many years. They say, most things in life, you'll get what you pay for. I made a right choice buying this tripod.

After having a series of cheaper tripods wear out with about a year's use (and I'm not hard on my photo gear), I decided to upgrade. I chose the Gitzo Mountaineer over another top brand because the Gitzo offers a center column, which I like for the small height adjustments I need to make for my flower photography. I have now used the Gitzo for two landscape photography trips as well as some close-up work, and it has been as good as I had hoped. It is built very solidly; the twist-locks on the legs operate smoothly and secure the leg positions snugly; changing the leg angles is easy; and the ball head works smoothly once one takes a few moments to get the feel for the friction control. I'm thoroughly satisfied with this purchase.

Fabulous! GITZO GK2542-82QD Mountaineer Series 2

The new GITZO GK2542-82QD Mountaineer Series 2 is a very good tripod system. It is a bit larger than the Traveler Series 2, making it more suitable for large zoom lenses like the CANON 70-200 and 100-400 lenses, which are heavier than smaller focal lengths. ( I also own the Traveler Series 2, which I really like when I'm using smaller prime lenses.) The new center ball head is very high quality; it reminds me of my LINHOF Profli 2 ball head which is also an example of metalworking art. You may have to pay more for GITZO products, however the outstanding quality you receive is really worth the cost. GITZO makes using a tripod fun instead of a hassle because they set up and take down very easily. ( Make sure you get the GITZO Tripod Bag. You will really like it a lot.)

I love Gitzo!!

I use this product for my digital photography as well as my for my 8x10 Deardorff. It is accurate and stable. It is light and portable. Everytime I use it I say to myself that it is the best tripod I have ever used. For anybody in doubt about spending the extra money without ever having used it you'll be glad you spent the money for a product that will not let you down.

How do I replace the ball head with a rrs 55??

How do I replace the ball head with a rrs 55??
Asked by: Howard
Just unscrew the existing head, make sure the panning knob is tight so the head will unscrew instead of the head turning from the panning movement and screw on the RRS BH55. I would however recommend the BH40, a more appropriate size for the Gitzo Mountaineer.
