ASUS MB169B+ overview

  • 1Description

The MB169B+ 15.6" Portable LED Backlit IPS USB-Powered Monitor from ASUS is a bus-powered, portable LED backlit monitor designed to be taken with you on the go. Simply connect this versatile monitor to your computer via the integrated USB 3.0 port and begin displaying your content on the HD screen that supports resolutions of up to 1920 x 1080.

Along with the enhanced resolution found on this display, you also benefit from a 14 ms response time and a 700:1 contrast ratio. The enhanced response time helps to reduce lag when viewing videos, while the high contrast ratio creates darker dark and brighter light colors that contribute to a more dynamic picture.

This 15.6" HD portable USB-powered monitor features a single USB 3.0 cable for power and data transmission
The ASUS MB168B+ comes with an auto-rotating display as well as the ASUS Smart Case, which is a two-way adjustable stand and protective sleeve
The MB168B+ features ASUS EzLink technology that offloads graphics processing from the PC to dedicated hardware in the monitor. As a result, a PC or notebook can drive up to five MB168 Series monitors at the same time, regardless of its own graphics capability - it just needs sufficient USB ports

*Note: Ezlink Utility software supports Windows-based operating systems only

    ASUS MB169B+ reviews

MB169B+ 15.6" Portable LED Backlit IPS USB-Powered Monitor is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Fairly Disappointing I tried to use this monitor with a chromebook (which integrates the DisplayLink drivers) and a KangarooPC (Win10 w/ drivers installed) to no avail. The monitor wouldn't budge out of standby-mode which strongly detracts from its utility. My use case was to use it for development with Eclipse and IntelliJ so I didn't require high refresh rates but 0 HZ refresh caused me to return the monitor. It may be I had a DOA but I did see the logo flash on the screen and the stand-by light, I suspect that ASUS was trying to differentiate themselves from all the other DisplayLink vendors with software tweaks that triggered my experience. Cheers

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Will not work with Microsoft Surface Book Bought this specifically to add more workspace off of my Surface Book i7, but it wont work. I've read that the SB may not supply enough power via the USB3.0 ports. Though i have tried many cables/adapters/hubs: Y usb3 cables, Y usb micro cables, and usb3 powered hubs too. Ive also read that some Surface Book and Surface Pro owners discovered that using a typical USB micro cable instead of a USB 3.0 micro cable actually works. I tried this but it still doesnt work for my SB. However, it does work on my MacBook Pro Retina... though not necessary for me as my Retina doesnt travel regularly. Does anyone have a fix for this?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good working, slim & light external screen Let's be clear: this is not a tablet: it doesn't have a processor, battery or touch-screen. It is just a screen that connects with a single USB 3.0 cable (recognizable by the blue connector) to your PC-laptop. So how does it work? Simple: just connect the Cable that comes with the screen to the screen and your laptop and voil.... Well, not quite: in fact for both Windows 7 and 10 (haven't tried others) you need to actually install drivers/run the software that comes with, or can be downloaded from the Asus website. There's not much to it, but if you are like me, planning to use it with a locked down company laptop, you'd better make sure your company's IT department is willing to assist you (it took me a few days and some convincing). So then what? Well, the screen comes in a nice and thin protective sleeve, that doubles as a stand. It doesn't look all too sturdy as a stand, but so far it has worked remarkably fine for me. Unfortunately I haven't quite figured out how you are supposed to 'pack' the USB cable with the sleeve, so I just keep it separate. The screen in the sleeve measures about half an inch at the thickest side (where the velcro closes the sleeve), and a bit thinner on the other side. In the sleeve the package is hardly wider than just the screen, while about 3/4 of an inch 'taller' (looking at it in 'landscape'). In terms of performance I have nothing to complain: I don't play any games on it, so not sure about refresh-rate, and I haven't hooked it up to a USB 2.0 port, which, from what I've been told would slow down the refresh rate, and also decreases the brightness (due to lower power supply?). On USB 3.0 the refresh rate is just fine (if not great) for office work, and the brightness if perfect for working in an office environment (even with daylight). Just don't expect miracles outside in the sun! It's light and travels well, so I am quite content with it... too bad it is just not plug-and-play.....

Rated 1 out of 5 by from does not work with professional video using Mac Monitor will not play back at full frame rate uncompressed video in any video player. If you are using Adobe Premiere CC this monitor will be useless to you. You cannot preview footage from Adobe on this monitor, let alone use it as your main monitor for editing. I don't think USB 3 is ready for secondary monitor at this time as their is not enough VRAM to run uncompressed footage through the USB port.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best portable screen for business users Pros: 1. 1920x1080 IPS panel with Matte finish. (Superior to my ThinkPad W510 15.6” 1080p Matte screen. 2. Only one connection - USB 3.0 (No extra power source needed) 3. ASUS MB169B+ even works on USB 2.0 (No extra power) 4. Lightweight and fits along with laptop in laptop bag 5. Good for Programmer, PowerPoint or any other documentation. Very crisp display. 6. Motion picture quality: MB169B+ has a good display for watching movies. Some people complain that colors are washed out. That's a characteristic of IPS panel. Furthermore, I think it is subjective. 7. MB169B+ Mouse Lag: Observed No Lag when used for Programming, documentation, web browsing, YouTube, Netflix. However, gamers would notice a lag. 8. Screen auto-tilt function works well (as tested on Windows 7) 9. Viewable from all angles (IPS panel) Cons: 1. Supplied Stand is not good enough. I bought $10 Anker Stand 2. Support for Linux drivers: ASUS MB169B+ does not work on rpm based Linux (CentOS, RHEL).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from One Fatal Flaw I have used USB monitors in the past and have never been happy with the lag that comes with monitors of that type. I thought since the MB169B+ was a USB 3.0 monitor that this problem would be solved. I noticed a sizeable lag even with the USB 3.0. I love the monitor in every other way. It is very light and portable, looks great, etc. I just can't get past the lag.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but not great To be honest I was expecting a little better quality of the picture for the price. The screen could be great as it's mobility is extraordinary especialy with additional 7-10 tablet stand providinig more angles with less place taken. The brightness and contrast are good enougt for work also in very bright places. The mate screen does well. It has only one cable. The mobility is great with it's weight and dimensions. I can carry the case with screen and my laptop in one bag :)However... the screen has one BIG disadvantage: the colors depth is very poor. On the photos the darks are black and the very bright colors are white. The information about signal is missing making the photos more flat than on other screens I have. I could live with that. the main purpose to use that thing to me is mostly working with documents, IDE and text processors, mails and browsing web sites. Here comes the problem. Many apps and web sites use light colors to show different regions, highlighting selected areas and such. It doesnt work. Light blue is white, light green is white, light gray is white, gray is something between gray and light beige... The color need to be relative dark to be noticeable. I can't see what is selected as the standard colors for highlighting are very light. In some apps like Skype I don't see the difference between regions. The poor color depth makes my eyes getting tired. I use the screen for less important information to minimize the time I'm looking at it.Some apps may be adjusted but I can't change the CSS settings of the web sites or for instance Skype default colors. The apps i can change after adjustment look much worse on the other screens because the colors are to dark to be comfortable to me.It's not a big deal if it would cost $ bucks, but for the price It's pretty annoying. The other thing... the colors are little bit to warm. The gray is not gray, its rather beige. It doesn't make a big difference when you working with documents, but for graphics it can be a problem.Perhaps the MB168B+ has better color depth but it's not possible to buy it in my coutry as it's discontinued now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very easy setup on PC laptop. On my Microsoft Surface laptop this USB monitor powered up, and was usable in about 20 seconds the first time I plugged it in. I had no need to even load a driver, update drivers or do any thing extra. Having a second, light-weight and portable external monitor that only needs a USB port for power and communication triples my potential work productivity using only a notebook computer. I am delighted.
