Impact Smoothy Reviews

Does the job!

The Impact Smoothy 360 is the best way to provide even light especially in tight fit rooms! When using a “lantern” modifier which has similar properties, it would easily be in the shot, while the Smoothy 360 won’t. In the specifications, it says, it’s made of glass, which I’m glad it isn’t. It’s actually a tough plastic, or PVC material or something of that nature... With that said, I fell VERY safe placing this modifier on top of people. It’s extremely light and it’s NOT glass. The Bowen’s finish (the 3 little squares) installs and uninstalls a lot easier than any other Bowen’s mount modifiers I used since those 3 squares are also non metal. (But aside the squares, the Smoothy 360 Bowen’s mount ring is). If you’re trying to have the Smoothy high on top of a table with talents, to reach far, without  the light being in the shot, An Impact C-Stand is highly recommended (B&H#IMLSCT40MK) https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/372016-REG  or an Impact SUPER heavy duty Boom Arm  B&H#IMLSABAS https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/917840-REG You can achieve various looks and results when placing this modifier. For a dramatic look, and the softest light, as for any modifier or light source, place the Smoothy as close as possible to the subject. (Be sure to check out the pics I uploaded here). Now, if you want the Smoothy to light everything and evenly, simply place it farther away from the subject. This is also a technique that can be useful if you’re trying to light a Chroma Key with a SINGLE light! Lighting is a science and the better guy understand it, the better you’ll be able to achieve the results you want, easily. Google or YouTube the “inverse Square Law” for lighting. How diffused? The diffusion on the Smoothy is great, install your led light you can actually see and look at the LED chip directly without strain with the light at low power. Overall, I’m very satisfied with this new addition to my modifier Arsenal. [I have received this product in exchange for my honest review]

Interesting and Useful Modifier

I wasn't quite sure how I would use, or if I would use a modifier like this but after doing a little testing and some real world shooting, I found the globe diffuser to be very interesting and useful. This is the 12 version of the Smoothy. This modifier serves to diffuse and spread light out in all directions, making it useful in situations where several people might need the same light (for instance, around a table) or to add light quickly to a room or area without setting up large directional light banks. Spread and coverage are a bit less than the 20 version, but given the right size room or number of people, this is just as good. As with any modifier, you choose the size based on proximity to subject and intent.

Great modifier and diffuser for key and fill lights!

First off, this is made of STRONG plastic, which is awesome! For some reason, we thought it might have been glass, but were really glad it wasn't, since this globe is sturdy and we know it won't break in case it falls or in transit to shoots. We used it both as a fill and key light and it worked great in both cases. As a fill light, it really does a good job of spreading the light evenly and as a key, you get that nice eye light for the actors or talent as well as an even light on them. Plus, it's actually really lightweight for the sturdiness of it and the build quality of the globe itself and the bowens mount is solid.

Perfect for offices with tall ceilings and poor light, this spreads and diffuses very well.

The diffuser is Plexi and rated for a 250w tungsten lamp. A 600W LED would be too hot.

Can this fit on a Fiilex P360 or P360EX? And if not, is there one (even from another company) that does?

Any other globe diffuser options for the Fiilex that have the same sleek look of the Impact versions? Also, might there be a particular adapter that would make the Fiilex P360 or P360EX compatible with the Impact Globe Diffuser?

Is it possible to make this work with a Fiilex P360 or P360EX by first connecting a Profoto to Bowen mount adapter and then connecting it all to the Impact Globe Diffuser? And if not, are there any other globe diffuser options for the Fiilex that have the same sleek look of these Impact versions?
Asked by: Tyrone
Hi Tyrone, Yes, you could use a Profoto to Bowens adapter to attach the Globe to the Fiilex P-series LED. Given the small mounting area of the P 360 and the additional distance from the Globe opening resulting from using the adapter, light spread will likely be somewhat compromised. The Smoothy Globe is the only product of this type available at B&H at this time.
