Varavon AM-ZEUS A7R2 ST overview

  • 1Description

The Zeus Standard Cage for Sony a7R II, a7S II, & a7 II from Varavon provides the added protection, stability, and accessory mounting options needed to prepare your Sony a7R II, a7S II, or a7 II camera for video production work. It features a walnut grip for handheld shooting as well as an adjustable handle that can rotate in 90° increments. The handle clamps onto a dovetail rail on the top of the cage or to dovetails found on the sides, providing a variety of configuration options.

With the camera in the cage, you still have access to the SD card slot, battery compartment, and all camera controls, so you won't have to waste time removing the camera from the cage during a shoot. The cage also leaves access open to the Multi-Interface Shoe for compatibility with accessories such as the Sony XLR-K1M adapter (sold separately).

The cage offers a variety of accessory mounting options. In addition to 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threaded holes, a 15mm rod port is integrated into the handle that positions an optional rod above and perpendicular to the camera, which is useful for mounting an external monitor or EVF. For further accessory mounting, there are two cold shoe mounts on the handle and a third on the top right of the cage. Included with the cage is a lightweight cable clamp that screws into any of the 1/4"-20 threaded holes and helps prevent a connected cable from accidentally being pulled out while shooting.

    Varavon AM-ZEUS A7R2 ST reviews

Zeus Standard Cage for Sony a7R II, a7S II, & a7 II is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's just what you need for an A7s This cage is almost perfect - three exceptions: 1.rather close tolerances on the side access panels for the audio and headphone connections to the camera, 2. the cage didn't come with the screw that you need to attach the camera, and 3. I didn't receive the allen wrench with the handle to modify the attachment angle. Otherwise, it gives me all of the attachment locations that I need, and some that I never even thought of. The handle that came with it is sturdy and attaches in numerous locations (*I'll be buying another handle for handheld operations). And, darn it, it just looks good - and the wooden grip gives the extra size you need to handle the kit when you load it up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Varavon Zuess Saved my $3k A7R mk ii I purchased this cage after researching many cages online. I partly picked it because of the flexibility of being able to remove the handles, partly because of the cable restraints and partly because it just looks great. Being able to remove the handles means that I can switch from shooting movies to stills in seconds. I have all of my audio gear on one handle and it attaches or detaches with the twist of one thumbscrew. The cage is fine to use for stills, I have larger hands so it is actually feels better to handle with the cage on. C1 is the only button that you need to reach from the back of the camera to get to ( a minor inconvenience). Someone with smaller fingers may not have this issue. Everything else is 100% accessible. I purchased another brand before I was set on this one and I sent it back as it was to heavy and added extra, unnecessary bulk. Here is the best bit: After having the cage for one week I inadvertently left my camera on the roof of my car after a shoot. I drove off and a couple of minutes later I took a turn and heard my camera and cage rolling off my roof onto the road! I was doing around 30 mph! I stopped the car in traffic and ran back to the camera, I picked up the pieces and jumped back in my car to pull off somewhere safe and inspect the damage. On further inspection the only damage that had happened was one of the replacable handles broke off at the stem and a cable restrainer broke... that was it! The A7R mkii was unscathed and works perfectly, The 55m Zeiss that was on the front had a small scratch on the lens hood. This cage is made very, very well! I would have no problem recommending it.. Great product that looks as good as it functions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Solid Cage I use this cage on my Sony A7s ii. Nice, snug fit. Love the wood grip and the extra size and support it gives the camera. I baby my equipment, so I have a lot more confidence putting my camera down on surfaces for lens changes, rigging, etc. Surprisingly, this has helped me move a little faster on set and has been a pretty big benefit. The fitted handle it comes with is pretty great too. I always attach it when I have the camera built out so It's easy to move from rig to rig. The only downside for me has been reaching the C1 and C2 buttons. If I need to quickly reach these buttons to white balance on a gray card, I have to squeeze my index finger in there to get it to go. Not a huge problem. Same goes for the lens release button. Another tough squeeze. Other than that, I'd recommend it to any other Sony a7s ii owners.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Solid cage but lacking key ergonomics. This cage fits the camera like a glove but it doesn't fit my hand. The walnut grip, although beautiful, cramps up my hand like crazy, especially since the video rec button is right behind there. Additionally, the top right cage bar makes it a two-hand operation to switch rec modes or custom mode buttons. The handle grip is necessary to handle the camera and operate different functions. It has a lot of versatility and configurations for almost anything. The quality of build is remarkable and it will definitely protect the camera and let you build on. Lack of threads for a hand-strap for the grip and the cage obstructing essential buttons makes me feel like im juggling it and getting carpal tunnel..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First time using a cage & love it I couldn't be happier with this cage. It's held up on a number of very physical, very demanding professional shoots. The ergonomics were designed intelligently and with the user in mind. Offers a little more weight to the Sony A7s II - which I love because the camera sits in my hand a little more securely. Great buy - you won't regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from transformative and necessary for a7rII LOVE this cage. I was reluctant to rig up the body because I value its small form factor. However, some things are necessary... for me that was being able to safely and securely attach a monitor and xlr sound. i use this with the small HD 501 and the sony xlr k1m kit... works perfectly. Still small size overall, but incredibly helpful to have a solid handle. All buttons and doors are still easily accessible (most importantly being the battery door). Fits perfectly, quick to break down and loads of options for different configurations. LOVE it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love quality! I've been waiting for a while for a cage for my A7rII and Varavon delivers. The quality of build is fantastic and I'm a sucker for anything that has wood. That grip is a beauty. The hand slides beautifully in place wherever the dovetails are. It's really nicely made. I used to have a Movcam for my A7s and I loved it. It was super tight with the camera body, very streamlined. The Varavon is very tight too, but not quite as tight. The MkII bodies are slightly larger than the MkI but I think that the cage could've been slightly tighter. On the other hand, the Varavon doesn't require to be taken apart to insert or remove the camera. You have to take the lens off if it's a relatively large lens, but it's pretty convenient not to have to use tools except for the tripod screw. The Varavon is bulkier just because it has the wooden grip. It could be removed but it I can't tell if it'll affect the structure. One thing that I liked on the Movcam was that instead of having a flat bottom, it had a dovetailed integrated plate on the bottom that fit with my Arcaswiss type ball head . I do stills and videos, so being able to put the camera with the cage quickly on a photo tripod was convenient. I'll just add an arcaswiss plate under the Varavon cage! There, fixed! The Varavon has more features (an extra coldshoe on the handle) and being able to move the handle around with no tools is great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fits like a glove Nothing I can really complain about here. It's made for the a7R II so it fits perfectly. I can still get to the battery, SD card and all the ports. Well built and I like the little cable pinch it comes with. I prefer the one that come with the a7R II and thankfully I can use it while the camera is in this cage. Well thought out.
