Hoya XHD3-77UV overview

  • 1Description

The Hoya 77mm HD3 UV Filter is a general use, clear filter designed to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight. Aside from the reduction of unwanted blue casts, no additional coloration or contrast is created, and adjustments to exposure are not required while using this filter. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections while providing over 99.7% light transmission, 16 layers of anti-reflection nano coatings are applied to each side. This total of 32 coatings offers a high degree of protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than uncoated filters. The nano coating formula associated with HD3 UV filters results in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency and is also effective with regard to oil and stains.

Constructed from chemically-hardened optical glass, the Hoya 77mm HD3 UV Filter offers enhanced resistance to scratches while providing clarity and color fidelity. It also features a thin, lightweight, aluminum-alloy filter ring to minimize the potential for vignetting.

This UV filter is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Such filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your front lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.

    Hoya XHD3-77UV reviews

    77mm HD3 UV Filter is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from High Quality & Easy Clean I have been a Hoya filter user for over 25+ years. I switched to that German company for 2 years and I have come back to the Hoya UV filters. I typically buy the top of the line filters to protect my quality lenses. I decided to try the new 77mm HD3 UV filter instead of the German company. I have now owned the filter for 2 weeks and spent last Saturday spent 6 hours at a wildlife photo shoot. The results are excellent. The 16 coatings, 8 per side and the Nano coating worked well with my new 70-200mm F/2.8FL E VRIII lens. Image quality was excellent with no flare. Also the filter is easy to clean with no smearing. So far it's excellent and highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for what it doesn't do! I've had issues with other reasonably high quality UV filters causing ghosting and flares. So much so that I spent some time comparing the effects of the various filters on my lenses. The Hoya HD series seem to have the least impact. My only real reason for the filter is protection of the front element. For my Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 I decided to try the new HD3. I've had fantastic results so far, and it does seem to clean easily.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hardly Notice It There are some products you simply don't want to know are there. That's the case with a good quality UV Filter like this one from Hoya. I bought it to protect the front elements of expensive lenses. (Why would any serious photographer put a cheap filter on an expensive lens anyway?) The protection doesn't come at the expense of image degradation and the thin metal ring does not protrude enough to cause vignetting. Of course it does filter UV light, but that was not my biggest concern.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Quality Purchased filter to protect 100-400 Canon is 2 lens. Seems to be very well made and high quality. Even though it was pricey I view it as relatively cheap insurance in case of a drop or other unexpected event. Has held up very well against dust and fingerprints

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth it I've got a few of these in various sizes. Provides some protection, but also seems give much better color rendition when cloudy and overcast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This UV filter does far more then just protection You get what you pay for! Its 4x stronger then normal glass, plus it has 16 layers of UV coating on each side for a total of 32 layers, and the light transmission is 99.7%

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Consistent reproduction The HD3 is all that I put on my lenses. Doing so maintains consistency across all images by all lenses. The filter is never in question. I have used these since the original HD filter on Nikon, and now I use the HD3 on Sony GM lenses. Yes it;s a few bucks more but well worth it. Also it fits fine on my 85/1.4GM which is why I got this. It does not touch the front element.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unbreakable, but ... I bought this filter after reading a recommendation on Ken Rockwell. He said it was made of unbreakable glass. I had a problem threading it onto my new 300 mm F4 PF Nikkor, but, after a few tries, I had on securely. Or, so I thought. I was standing, when, somehow, the filter fell off the lens and landed on my hardwood floor. I thought I just broke my filter and was really upset. But when I picked up the filter, it was completely undamaged. So, it deserves 5 stars for not breaking, but it should not have come off the lens to begin with. So, I'm giving it 4 stars.
