Sony DPTS1 Reviews

Purpose built, and I Love it!

I wanted a good way to capture my notes electronically. I have always been quite scattered, with sticky notes and a bunch of notebooks laying around, it was a pain to keep track of everything, and I was missing things. I had originally started looking at large format tablets, Samsung Pro, MS Surface, etc., but I already have a tablet, they usually don't take notes very well, and are hard on the eyes. Then I found that there are e-ink devices out there that take a pen input. Sweet! But there are only a couple out there that have a large 8.5x11 ish sized screen, the Onyx Boox Max, and the Sony Digital Paper. Boox Max was cool, but reviews weren't glowing, it only took input from the pen, is a bit heavy, and the battery life isn't very good. So...Sony's Digital Paper it is. Yes, it is only capable of reading and working with PDFs, but it does this very well. Being able to write notes directly in existing documents is really handy, but I can't add blank pages to an existing document. When using the Notes function with a template it is almost like writing on paper, not too slippery like writing on a glossy tablet screen. I can write as fast as I want and it keeps up no problem, and I can add as many pages as I want. One issue I had is when I used a scanned page with my companies logo on it as a note template. It worked, but it constantly had to think when going between writing, erasing, and writing again. Perhaps it's because it is pdf image. No biggie, I just use the templates provided by Sony. The battery life for this device is amazing, it lasts easily for a week (for me) and this device is super light, I really do prefer to have this over a notepad. One more thing, I can cut & paste my notes, but I can't with text. I wish I could take sections of text from documents and paste into my notes. That would be perfect. Overall, worth every penny, and I love it!

A great toy and tool for people who read a lot of pdfs. I'm thinking researchers. Display is a bit laggy but livable. The default option for setting up sharefile didn't work. However, following the instructionson this pdf DID work https://pro.sony.com/bbsc/assetDownloadController/Digital_Paper_Cloud_Storage_Configuration_Guide.pdf?path=Asset%20Hierarchy$Professional$SEL-yf-generic-427521$SEL-yf-generic-427522SEL-asset-456591.pdf&id=StepID$SEL-asset-456591$original&dimension=original

Super light weight. The handwriting is quite responsive and page turning speed is not bad. The battery is durable. The system is well optimized for pdf reading and it has bunch of features to improve the reading experience. I shall say although it's a locked operating system with old hardware, it still beats other 13.3'' e-ink reader. Thank Sony for providing this amazing product

I'm pleasantly surprised by this delicate piece. It displays pdf well and is a pleasure to read my books on. Lack of dropbox or slow internet doesn't bother me, though I do hope the memory could be bigger in opening some big pdf files and turning pages. I do wish the resolution could be greater but this is good as it is for general reading purposes. It is having problem identifying the external microSD but the SD card itself could be the culprit though it used to work fine. Other than those small glitches, I'm a happy camper. Thanks Sony :)

Simply awesome! Well done Sony!

I have been using a Vaio Z for a long time and was totally impressed by their engineering. This is another gem of a device created by Sony.. Amazing piece of technology. Has saved me tons of time sifting through papers and perfect for taking note. This has become my diary. Only two words for Sony: well done!!

Great for PDF reading

As long as you understand this device is only for reading PDF files you should be pleased. If you are looking for a reader for epub or mobi files look elsewhere. You also need to realize the display is e-ink. e-ink is specifically designed to appear like normal paper. That means you need to read the device under light - it is not backlit like a laptop or newer kindle display. e-ink is very easy on the eyes and I can read hours and hours on this without eye strain. I read a lot of PDF ebooks - especially technical books. This device was a replacement for an old 1st generation Kindle DX which is no longer sold. I do not use the devices annotation/note taking feature, I just use it for reading. Flipping pages is pretty snappy--but please realize that e-ink takes a while to program, so it does take longer due to the e-ink technology to swap a page. Things I like: 1) Easy on the eyes 2) Very lightweight 3) Great battery life (with wifi disabled) - several weeks 4) Ability to sync with my own webdav server. (Rather then needing to get out the USB cable) 5) Nice table of contents feature and bookmarking There are a few things I do not like: 1) Sometimes I zoom into a page because there is wasted blank space (outside margins) on the PDF page. When zoomed in you can no longer use your finger to swipe and turn pages. Instead the swipe is interpreted as wanting to pan the view on the current the page. However you can use the page forward/back buttons on the bottom left of the screen to turn pages without this problem. Which bring me to my next issue... 2) There is no way to customize the location of the controls. The forward/back buttons are on the bottom left corner of the touch screen. Sometimes tapping the back button does not register -- I assume this because it is in the very bottom corner of the touch screen and it might be a calibration/sensitivity issue. Simply moving these controls up an inch would workaround that, but there is no way.

Amazing for what it does.

Great for reading PDFs. Flipping pages is quick, even with large textbook PDFs.

Great product to convert to a digital workflow

The Sony DPTS1 is a nicely made, extremely lightweight replacement for your paper notebook or notepad. Writing on the screen feels just like writing on paper and the text appears quickly, if not instantly, as you write. The ink flow is smooth and adds to the impression of writing on paper. Connectivity with cloud storage is a challenge. Cloud services such as Adobe Document Cloud, OneDrive and Dropbox are not available as menu options though it may be possible to connect them through WebDav. As I have not been able to do this as yet, this is a limitation that impacts on the use of the device in the workplace. Otherwise I love the product.

Coming to the question, I am looking for Sony DPT-S1, do you have it in stock? Can you ship this product to India? How about product warranty? Is it an international warranty? My final question, do I need to pay the customs duty while placing the order? Thank you.

Did anyone try to sync with 'Box' or ' Dropbox'?

I tried sync with Box. It works, but it is just some kind of union. If you delete files in one side, and sync will put them back from other side.
