Available for download, Swarm Mandolins from Spitfire Audio is a performance-oriented virtual instrument based on 14,760 samples of one large and one small ensemble of charangos, mandolins & ukuleles. The virtual instrument draws on the sampled material as you play on your keyboard, recreating your playing in the sound of the ensemble of your choice. Sampled by 19 guitarists placed in pairs between ribbon microphones around the Air Studios hall in London, this volume offers several playing styles including measured & unmeasured tremolo, muted plucks, and behind-the-bridge effects. There is also a patch featuring a variety of ready-made chords spread over the keyboard. The measured tremolo is recorded in two different tempos, and its speed can not only be modulated, but can also be made to sync exactly to the tempo of your track. For further sound customization there are sliders which control the dynamics, the overall volume, and the release, which is the time notes reverberate before fading out.
Six mic perspectives and three mic mixes can be combined and blended for effectful shifts in focus and depth, and are also fully output assignable for surround and 5.1 use. The library is sampled in several dynamic layers and with multiple slightly varying versions of each sound, known as round robins. Each time you hit a certain key a random round robin plays back, giving your virtual performance a lifelike feel. Recorded in situ within the Definitive Range, Swarm Mandolins is designed to blend seamlessly with other Spitfire libraries, including Albion, the British Modular Library range, and part of the Signature range. The full sonic agreement between libraries enables you to combine orchestral sections and instruments, and have them sound as if they were being played together in the same room.
Note: Requires full version of KONTAKT 5
The overview panel gives you a quick and easy way to access, view, and load the different articulations, mic mixes, and essential controller functions which you can then reassign to suit your workflow.
General Controls Panel
This is a deeper but still simple UI panel that allows you to tweak the general settings. You can choose, for example, how many round robins you want and how you want them to behave, or how memory is organized alongside pitch options.
By customizing your mix of microphone positions, you are able to scale the library to the system you are working on at any particular moment. These are the six microphone positions:
