The downloadable Igneous Electric Cellist from Spitfire Audio is a performance-oriented virtual instrument based on samples played by the session cellist Peter Gregson. The sample library covers the character, performance, and playing-technique ranges of the electric cello with 6957 studio-recorded samples. For genuine sound versatility, the samples portray three different dynamic levels, as well as a range of sound colors reflecting varying positions of the bow relative to the bridge and fingerboard. Each sample is available in a choice of close, room, and DI microphone mixes to help you achieve just the sound you want.

The Igneous Electric Cellist's graphic user interface lets you choose between four so-called patches: Performance, Performance Lite, Various Articulations, and Phrases & Techniques. In any of the two Performance patches you simply play your music on your keyboard without much manual customization; the Performance patches respond intelligently to your stroke on the keyboard and recreate your playing in electric cello sound with cello-specific articulations. The Various Articulations patch enables you to manually control the type of articulations you want to apply to any particular note or group of notes, and the Phrases & Techniques patch offers an arsenal of passages and sound textures. Dynamics, vibrato, grind, distortion, and reverb controls provide tools for in-depth sound customization from each of the patches. Recorded dry, the library's samples allow for maximum control over ambient effects.

Patches
  • Performance and Performance Lite
    • Intelligent keystroke response: Slower keystrokes produce sliding transitions between notes and faster keystrokes produce more bow changes.
    • "Subito" effects such as sforzato and staccato are easily created, since the dynamics of the attack depend on keystroke velocity whereas the sustain element of notes is controlled by the dynamics slider.
  • Various Articulations
    • Individually-sampled articulations include long expressive notes, harmonics, col legno, tremolo, spiccato, and more.
    • Special cello effects include rising and falling slides, attacks played with the wood of the bow, and finger noises for added realism.
  • Phrases & Techniques
    • Passages and textures include major and minor arpeggios, triplet jump loops, semiquaver runs, bowed fifths, harmonic trills, and more.
Overview Panel
The overview panel gives you a quick and easy way to access, view, and load the different articulations, mic mixes, and essential controller functions which you can then re-assign to suit your workflow.
General Controls Panel
This is a deeper but still simple UI panel that allows you to tweak the general settings. You can choose, for example, how many round robins you want and how you want them to behave, or how memory is organized alongside pitch options.
Ostinatum
This device allows you to build up complex rhythmical patterns that react to your playing to create original effects.
