Available for download, the Gwilym Simcock Felt Piano from Spitfire Audio is a virtual musical instrument based on 7055 samples of an upright piano played with the celeste pedal engaged. The virtual instrument draws on the sampled material as you play on your keyboard, recreating your playing in the intimate felt-like sound of this muted instrument. Performed by jazz pianist Gwilym Simcock, the super-soft samples are boosted by the virtual instrument to allow for full dynamic playing without losing the muted quality of the original timbre. You can also choose to keep your playing within the super-soft range by using the medium- and flat-dynamics' patches, which make the instrument less sensitive to the velocity of your keystroke. There is a special patch for playing short articulations which produces tighter sounds as you play louder.
Control sliders open further sound-customization possibilities: The pedal-volume and pedal-dynamic sliders modulate the volume of the noise of the pedal as it goes down and back up, the dynamics slider modulates the volume of the actual instrument, and the expression slider controls the overall volume. Six different microphone mixes can be combined and blended for effectful shifts in focus and depth. The library is sampled with several slightly varying versions of each sound, known as round robins. Each time you hit a certain key a random round robin plays back, giving your virtual performance a lifelike feel. Recorded dry, the samples allow for easy manipulation and in-depth control of ambient effects.
Note: Requires full version of KONTAKT 5
The overview panel gives you a quick and easy way to access, view, and load the different articulations, mic mixes, and essential controller functions which you can then re-assign to suit your workflow.
General Controls Panel
This is a deeper but still simple UI panel that allows you to tweak the general settings. You can choose, for example, how many round robins you want and how you want them to behave, or how memory is organized alongside pitch options.
