Available for download, the Hans Zimmer Percussion Los Angeles HZ2 from Spitfire Audio is a performance-oriented virtual musical instrument based on samples of drummer Jason Bonham playing his DW Vistalite kit. The virtual instrument draws on a library of 34,335 samples as you play on your keyboard, recreating your playing in the DW Vistalite sound of your choice. This second installment of composer-producer Hans Zimmer's percussion library includes sounds recorded at three legendary Los Angeles locations: the Newman Stage at 20th Century Fox, the Sony Scoring Stage, and an enormous space on Hans Zimmer's own lot dubbed "The Cathedral." The sampled sounds portray the various drum elements of the DW Vistalite kit played with diverse beater types and techniques. Crafted by three top sound engineers, a variety of mic perspectives and stereo & surround mixes present masterful blends of the multiple recorded mic signals. Effectful shifts in focus and depth are easily achieved by combining these mic perspectives and mixes.
Boom-, crack-, gate-, and pitch-control dials allow for further sound customization. The boom and crack dials enable you to filter out high- and low-end frequencies, respectively. The pitch dial fine-tunes the patches, and the gate dial — for use on Geoff Foster's mic signals only — gates-off reverb to create the snare sound characteristic of tracks of the 1980's. The HZ2 is topped off with a section of performable synth-processed sounds created by Hans Zimmer using the volume's samples as raw material. The library is sampled with multiple slightly varying versions of each sound, known as round robins. Each time you hit a certain key a random round robin plays back, giving your virtual performance a lifelike feel. Hans Zimmer Percussion Los Angeles runs on the Kontakt 5 player, the full version of which is included with the library.
The overview panel gives you a quick and easy way to access, view, and load the different articulations, mic mixes, and essential controller functions which you can then re-assign to suit your workflow.
General Controls Panel
This is a deeper but still simple UI panel that allows you to tweak the general settings. You can choose, for example, how many round robins you want and how you want them to behave, or how memory is organized alongside pitch options.
This library uses the Kickstart Engine, which is a Kontakt interface dedicated to percussion instruments. It provides a quick and easy way of accessing the library's collection of instruments and their various playing styles & techniques in a single patch.
