Canon 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

Offering a versatile range of telephoto perspectives, the black EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens from Canon is an 88-320mm equivalent zoom designed for APS-C-format EOS M-series mirrorless cameras. The optical design incorporates one aspherical element and one Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) to control chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the long-reaching zoom range.

Complementing the optical design and telephoto reach is an Optical Image Stabilizer, which compensates for up to 3.5 stops of camera shake to benefit handheld shooting with slower shutter speeds. An STM stepping motor is also featured, which produces fast, smooth, and near-silent autofocus performance to support both stills and video recording applications. For increased control, full-time manual focus operation is also available for making fine-tuned focus adjustments.

Telephoto zoom lens for EF-M mount APS-C format mirrorless cameras provides an 88-320mm equivalent focal length range.
One aspherical element and one UD element combine to reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for increased sharpness and clarity.
Optical Image Stabilizer technology compensates for up to 3.5 stops of camera shake to better enable taking sharp handheld photos in difficult lighting conditions.
STM stepping motor offers fast, quiet, smooth, and accurate autofocus performance that is ideal for video recording as well as still shooting.
Full-time manual focus mode (AF+MF) lets you instantly switch to manual focus control in AF mode for making fine-tuned adjustments.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm produces a smooth out-of-focus quality when working with shallow depth of field or selective focus techniques.
A five-group optical zoom system maintains a compact, lightweight form factor that is well-matched to the sleek profile of EOS M mirrorless cameras.

    Canon 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 reviews

EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens (Black) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bordering on excellent The compact size requirements of lenses dedicated to the EOS M series of cameras mean large aperture, super speed lenses just aren't in the recipe. Despite this short-coming, my EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM knocks my socks off! Tack-sharp and beautiful color rendition. Just hold it rock steady ...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Short but sweet Great IS Good AF for entry level telephoto zoom (vs USM or non-USM EF-S Canon offerings) Small footprint to focal length ratio As sharp as other EF-S telephoto zooms For what it is, it's great, but, you may wish to wait for the EOS M4 first for dual pixel AF for soccer/baseball mom usage (IE fast AF on the field). Also this doesn't cover higher end telephoto usage IE 120mm or 135mm @ F4 (35mm equivalent) or faster for telephoto portraiture or indoor telephoto usage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unbelievable I bought this lens to go with the Canon M3 based on the MTF Chart shown on the Canon Website. It was hard to believe, but the MTF chart for this lens was better than the MTF chart for my 70-200 2.8 L lens. Obviously the L lens is much faster, but the expanded ISO of the M3 I am able to get good, clean crisp shots handheld. I don't expect to get rid of my L lens, but the 55-200 is much easier on my back. A great lens if you're looking for a lighter load to carry. I do wish Canon had used a metal attaching collar.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens for an Amateur I got this at the recommendation of a family member for my Canon EOS M. I don't have much experience with photography. That being said, this is an extremely easy lens to use. I am able to quickly switch between lenses and it has a great amount of zoom. I use this lens while hiking, at my daughter's gymnastics class, and wildlife/birdwatching, among other things.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from EF-M 55-200mm Lens Small, lightweight, and sharp. It can also focus very close. I can take a picture of a rose that covers the whole frame. Its IS is also great. Its bokeh is even better than my EF-70-200mm F2.8 L II. I bought it and the M3 system for vacation. I am tired of lugging my Canon 5D Mark II on vacation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Really Good Lens for an M Cameral My wife and I will meet my borther and his wife in Jackson Hole in about three weeks for a vacation of fun, laughs, food, wine and a Great Environment. We are staying at the Jackson Lake Lodge in Grand Teton National Park - one of my favorite places. On the first full day, we are all taking a private tour of Yellowstone. My five and I did this once before but for my brother and sister in law, this will be their first. If you have read this far, this trim is the reason for the EF-M 55-200mm. I travel without encumbrance of family to wild and scenic places on landscape photo workshops. On those trips, I shoot an EOS 5D MKIII with big, heavy L lenses. And I use good Induro tripods. I also use the 5D for shooting Friday night highschool football for our local weekly newspaper with my 70-200. So far the EF-M 55-200 (the a crop factor multiplier equal to full frame 88-320) has been a joy to use. It is primarily constructed on the exterior of carbon fiber. The lens mount is carbon fiber. Some may not think that is a good construction but this compact lens feels tight and exudes quality. The zoom is a twist ring pumper that feels precise and holds in intermediate places. The image stabilization is amazing. It gives a 3.5 to 4 stop hand holding ability that can be switched off in the software for tripod shooting. It's has a slow variable maximum aperture but seems very sharp with great color contrast. This little lens has produced excellent image quality on my first generation M. Focus with the STM drive is quick and accurate. There is no hunting. It snaps into focus or just can't focus due to low light. The original M is maligned for its focus properties, but with this lens and the great EF-M 22mm, I find focus properties OK and any fault is not the fault of the EF-M 55-200. Lastly, the size of this lens is just ridiculous for its performance. It's small and light. I hope to shoot some of the animals about the Tetons.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not Bad. Could be sharper. All the other M lenses are quite sharp. This one is not really too sharp but I have never printed anything shot with it. On my 55 inch tv they look quite good. If I need real sharpness I guess I could stick my 70-200 L lens on it. But for travel photography which I are mostly in bright light it works well. Great IS. Can't wait for the 28mm Macro.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works fine I use L lenses with my EOS-6D and thus have a high bar for new purchases. I am pleased with the EOS-M3 camera performance and image quality with a few complaints. . I find the EF-M 55-200 mm to produce decent images, but I miss the bokeh of a good f/2.8. . It is not a fast lens, but the images are very good. I will put it in my backpack to keep weight down on longer hikes. But I have to say I would like for Cacon to produce L quality lenses for the M series. I really like the compactness of the M series lenses and believe there is a market for mirrorless Canon cameras and native M series lenses that can compete with Sony and Fuji and others. The time has come. But no complaints about the EF-M 55-200. The price is okay, the build is okay, and the image quality quite decent.
