    Akitio AK-NT2-U31AA-AKTU reviews

    NT2 U3.1 2-Bay USB 3.1 Enclosure is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product I use this machine as a backup for one of my Lightroom catalogs. For that purpose it is excellent. A piece of cake to install the two HDD. Plug-and-play in my Mac Pro. The only con, if I have to mention just one, is that this thing gets wicked hot when spinning for a while. After copying a couple of TB of photographs onto it, it was hot enough to melt granite. But, it kept on working just fine, so apparently it doesn't overheat. Just be careful handling it after you've been spinning it for a while.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A little gem... This is a very nice little enclosure : at first sight we may see that this product is done by a very professional manufacturer. I just like it ! Before doing anything else, I have first checked the good working of each of the 4 basic settings with the hard drives inserted : everything was fine and went fast and easy. I have put two 4TB hard drives in this little gem. I was using the first of these two hard drives for my downloaded movies and the second one to do the backup of the first one. As the free space was getting low, I decided to buy an 8TB hard drive to put the original movies on it and to buy this Akitio NT2 U3.1 enclosure so I may run my two 4TB drives together in it in a RAID 0 mode to get the equivalent of an 8TB hard drive so I may do the backup of my new 8TB on it. I have done the whole backup of my movies (3.52 TB) in a very short time, considering the faster speed of a RAID 0 setting. I am very happy of this speed even if I can't actually run under a 3.1 USB connexion. Never the temperature of the two 4TB hard drives did get hotter than 35C during the whole backup process with the fan ON. The noise of the fan was just a little bit higher than the noise of the two hard drives themselves. The overall noise was acceptable, but I admit that this is an entirely subjective point of view. I think that anyone who has the need for an external hard drive enclosure should consider to buy this unit, even if it was to house a single drive because we never know when we may have to buy another hard drive which will have to be put inside an external enclosure and the price of this unit is cheaper than the combined price of some two single external enclosures. Considering the handiness offered by the 4 basic settings of this enclosure, we are pretty sure that it will fill almost any of our future needs. Remember to convert to GPT any hard drive which would be greater than 2TB in capacity after you have changed the setting of the enclosure. You have to do this conversion before creating any partition on the drive so to get access to the full capacity of the drive. Finally, if you ever get some problems with this enclosure when you use it for the very first time and you try everything but nothing works correctly, the only thing that will remain for you to do is to... read the instructions. One of the instructions of the Setup guide is : Make sure to backup all existing data first!. P.S. : Many thanks to B&H for the very professional care they take to do their packaging, which helps very much for securing our investments.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quiet - flexible - hot swap - energy efficient I just bought a desktop with USB3.1 ports and needed and external drive case as the new desktop didn't come with enough bays. This unit is whisper quiet . If I want to swap drives, I just power it off, swap the drives and Win10 recognizes them without me rebooting my pc. Flexible - I can plug this into my laptop as well. When comparing it to WD MyBooks, this is a better option - can plug any drive into it, uses only 1 power supply for two drives vs 1 per MyBooks, if this case fails, then I can pullout the hd and connect to my pc.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little box This is a very nice enclosure with impressive quality. I purchased this to house 2 existing drives and connect to a new iMac with USB 3. I can't speak to the RAID setups, but I'd expect that it works well. Includes an adaptor to connect the USB A cable to USB C port on the Mac.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good build quality and performs well. Missing cable though Akitio site says all 2017 made units would come with USB-C adaptor for included cable. Mine did not come with the stated adaptor. Performance is great and build quality is good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Remarks about the noise of this enclosure... This is an adding to my previous comment made on the 4/7/2016. After some experimentation with this enclosure, I find the overall noise a little bit disturbing considering the fact that I am a very noise sensitive person. I have 4 computer's components on my desktop which are making noise : the computer itself and 3 hard disk's enclosures. The computer, which I assembled by myself, is the most silent component because I have taken a great care in the choice of each of it's parts and all of them were chosen for their silentness : this computer is almost silent. Concerning the hard drive's enclosures, I have 2 single fanless hard drive enclosures and this Akitio NT2 U3.1 enclosure, and the most noisy enclosure is the Akitio one. There are some reasons why this is the case : first, there are 2 hard drives running inside this enclosure instead of one and second, the 2 single hard drive enclosures are completely closed while the Akitio one has some small openings on the front and on the back panels so the air may pass through the enclosure to get the heat out of the box. These small openings, while they let the air pass through the enclosure allow also the noise to get outside of the box. This makes the enclosure a little bit more noisier than my 2 other enclosures but, from my point of view, it is really necessary to be like this because to let 2 hard drives inside a small enclosure like this one without any ventilation would create much heath inside the box and that would certainly harm the hard disks on the long run. I want to stress here the fact that I really think that this problem is not related only to Akitio but to any enclosure of this type. I think however that it is certainly possible for Akitio to do some research concerning the noise reduction on this type of enclosure. Personally, I see 2 possibilities that would maybe help : first, as the things are now, the air really do pass too directly through the openings of the front panels : it would be possible to conceive the inside of the front panel as a kind of breakwater that would reduce the volume of sound getting out of the box. It would be better to conceive a series of U shape plastic pieces alternately inverted, which would run vertically or horizontally behind this front panel, obliging the air to move with a serpent like movement, or any other way of doing that would not allow the air to go too directly from the outside to the inside of the enclosure. The exact way of doing this is up to the Akitio's engineers. Second, the sound gets also through the side and the bottom panels of the enclosure and it would maybe be possible to put an acoustic membrane on the inside of these panels. I must insist on the fact that the noise is not too loud but for a noise sensitive person like me it may be disturbing. The problem for these persons may be bypassed by putting the enclosure in a place not to near of their ears or behind another object. If you do not intent to let this enclosure ON for a long period of time, like if you want to use this enclosure to only do the backup of your data on a ponctual basis, the noise will not be a problem, otherwise it may be and, as I already said, this would certainly be the same for any other enclosure of this type. Question of noise apart, I am still very satisfied with this small enclosure which is very pretty, done with good materials and well builded : it is a nice object to have on my desk.
