Panasonic 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

Featuring a slim, lightweight design, the Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. Lens is a standard zoom, offering a 28-84mm equivalent focal length range, for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. The lens construction incorporates a pair of aspherical elements, which help to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for increased clarity and sharpness. This updated model also features MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization) to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. This system is also compatible with Lumix cameras featuring the Dual I.S. feature that pairs in-body and lens-based stabilization methods for comprehensive shake compensation to support stills shooting and movie recording in low-light and other challenging conditions.

Designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, this lens provides a 28-84mm equivalent focal length range to cover wide-angle to short telephoto perspectives.
Two aspherical elements work to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range and also contribute to a more compact, lighter-weight design.
MEGA O.I.S. compensates for camera shake in order to realize sharper photos and videos when shooting handheld.
Image stabilization system is compatible with Lumix cameras featuring the Dual I.S. feature that blends both in-camera and lens-based stabilization methods for more effective camera shake correction.
Compact design measures just 1.9" long and weighs 3.9 oz to maintain a sleek overall profile.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm produces a smooth out-of-focus quality when working with shallow depth of field techniques.

    Panasonic 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 reviews

Lumix G Vario 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. Lens is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Standard Lens If you get this lens with a kit purchase you will have a very good standard lens; the image quality is as good as the Pana. 14-45 (or very nearly). But the 14-45 is longer and heavier. This lens won't provide the IQ of the Oly 12-40 Pro (the best 4/3 lens I own), but this lens is one-third the price and about 1/3 the weight. For non-critical uses I like this small, light, good-enough lens. This lens outperforms the the tiny pancake standard zooms from both Oly and Pana., and it has better IQ than does the Oly 12-50. Overall, this is a very good quality standard zoom that most users should be happy with. If you don't already have a similar lens and can get this one strongly discounted as part of a kit you should get very good results. My experience is using this lens with Oly OMD EM-10; other cameras may react differently.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from not awful, not great I have both this lens and the 14-45 zoom. This lens flares much too easily, even with the lens hood in place. You simply cannot shoot against the light with this lens. Otherwise it's a reasonable performer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice but limited stabilization Like others have said, it's a nice little walkaround or starter lens. I got it as a kit lens on a G7 and usually use the 1.7 20mm pancake instead, but the 14-42 is certainly nice and sharp and a good general performer. One caveat I'd offer is that the stabilization seems to be an older technology that certainly helps with hand shake but the combination of the G7 and this lens doesn't give you the dramatic near-Steadicam effect I've found with other options. So don't literally walk the lens around while you're shooting expecting the stabilizer to make it look smooth, and you'll be fine. : )

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Surprisingly good for video. I needed a decent low price zoom lens for a video project and this pretty much fit the bill. Incidentally, I also needed a decent lens for taking pictures. I'm a cinematographer by trade and normally prefer to use prime lenses. When I do use zoom lenses for video I normally prefer ones with constant aperture. Yet even so, this lens managed to deliver really good images. It's also really good for photos. It's a good starter lens and a good quick alternative for videos. Not my first choice but still a good one.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK but too much flare This lens is reasonably sharp and a decent performer as long as bright light sources are well outside the frame. Even if the sun is fairly high overhead, bad flare can result if the sun is in front of the camera. OK for a cheap kit lens. The 14-45 is a considerably better performer (I have both).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super, compact lens for video and stills. First of all, everyone should own this lens, but if you have a chance to pick it up for a bit extra as a kit *definitely* go for it. It is better than the version one as well as the 14-45. Small, compact, light, sharp, great color, great coatings, great microtextures. OK, my 42.5 prime is sharper, but not bu much. I use it for professional videography. I really didn't want to buy it, then I really didn't want to use it, but I threw it on during a big multicam project, When I got home, I kept scratching my head and saying, must have mixed it up with the prime (same size, same color). So I ran some tests, still trying to say "can't be good." Nope. It's the real deal. I bought two with two G7 cameras as a kit. Latest firmware supports *dual* IS on the G85. How cool is that? Very cool.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent for the price If you're looking for standard shots on a micro four thirds camera this is an excellent lens to have on a budget. I am using it on a BMPCC as a general use lens, so it's size is very convenient. There are much better lenses out there; this one is of course missing a powered stabilizer, but for this price I am happy with the purchase for what I use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for the cost This is a great starter lens when you don't want to shell out almost two thirds of your body cost on glass. it's light and versatile. at 14mm it's great for up and close interviews or capturing emotional reactions and even the 42mm that is somewhat limited with a 5.6 f stop still works in properly lit environments. not amazing for quick zooms.
