Panasonic 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

A truly versatile all-in-one zoom, the Lumix G Vario 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens from Panasonic is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 28-280mm equivalent focal length range. POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) benefits this expansive wide-to-tele zoom range by compensating for camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. The lens construction incorporates three aspherical elements and a pair of extra-low dispersion elements to minimize chromatic aberrations and distortions for greater image sharpness and clarity. Multi-coatings have also been applied to individual elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity in harsh lighting conditions.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, this lens also features a stepping motor for fast and quiet autofocus performance that benefits both stills and movie shooting. An internal focusing design maintains the overall lens length during operation and also quickens focusing speeds.

Designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, this lens provides a 28-280mm equivalent focal length range to cover wide-angle to telephoto perspectives.
Three aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion elements combine to minimize spherical and chromatic aberrations, as well as distortion, throughout the zoom range for increased clarity and sharpness.
Multi-coated elements help to suppress lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy.
POWER O.I.S. compensates for camera shake in order to realize sharper photos and videos when shooting handheld.
Stepping motor provides smooth and near-silent autofocus that pairs with an inner focusing design for quick performance. The AF system is also compatible with Lumix cameras' high-speed contrast-detection systems for focusing speeds up to 240 fps.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm produces a smooth out-of-focus quality when working with shallow depth of field techniques.

    Panasonic 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 reviews

    Lumix G Vario 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 34.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great all-around lens. I own two Lumix bodies and 6 different lenses. I end up using this lens about 60% of the time, even though it's slower than the 35-100mm f2.8 and 12-35 f2.8 lenses I have. The range is optimal for general photography and street photography. I also like the extra zoom range beyond 200mm (on 35mm format). I have occasional issues with focus, but it's probably due to user error more than the lens itself. I've found it to be super sharp when used correctly. The OIS is great too. It's a compact workhorse that I use for most outdoor shooting unless I know I need bokeh and narrow depth of field that faster lenses (and primes) provide. The value for what you get is very high.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent quality and all around camera lens This 14-140 mm lens replaced my old 14 - 42 mm Lumix lens. I also have the 100 to 300 mm Lumix lens. The problem that I had was that by the time I change to the longer lens for a close up shot, the wild life has moved on. Now with the 14 140 mm lens I can take scenery pictures and if an eagle or a moose comes along, I have reasonable magnification. But more importantly, I do not miss the shot. It is a great all around camera lens. This lens is surprising light but very well made. Zoom is very smooth even when zooming while taking videos and focus is fast. Pictures are very sharp and the optical image stabilization is wonderful. I love the complements that I receive about the quality of my photos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Super Zoom I have never been drawn to super-zooms but the majority of my photography takes place on hikes, snowshoeing and bike rides. I am down grading (in size) from my Canon FF gear to MFT and after reading reviews of this lens I decided to give it a try. I am not disappointed. It is compact and light and the image quality is excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great walk-around lens I use this as a general walk-around lens. It is on my LUMIX GX-8 most of the time. It is equivalent to a 28 to 280mm lens on a 35mm. It is light weight and small. Most people don't pay attention to me because the camera and lens aren't overwhelming. It allows me to get images that I wouldn't get if I used my pro DSLR. I have faster lenses but they are used for more specific tasks. So if you want a single lens that works well for most tasks, then this is your lens!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well with a Panasonic Lumix GX8 camera I just received this lens a few days ago and am still learning what it can do. I shoot both photos and video, but mostly concentrate on 4K video. So far, I'm impressed with the clarity, focus speed and zoom range on this 14-140mm lens. There is no vignetting and I do not see any falloff in the image from Panasonic's much more expensive 12-35mm and 35-100mm lenses, both of which I own. When I got the lens, I checked for the version of its firmware and found it was the latest version: 1.1. With my GX8 camera updated to the latest version of its firmware, this lens/camera combination provides both in-lens and in-camera stabilization, something I wanted. However, you should note that you do not get in-camera stabilization when shooting 4K video -- only lens stabilization is available for 4K video. You do get both forms of stabilization when shooting HD video -- I confirmed both this and the lens-only stabilization for 4K video. Shooting 4K video, there is slight jitter in the image with the lens zoomed all the way in. Otherwise, it looks good zoomed out to 140mm (equivalent to 280mm on a full-size sensor). There is no jitter when using the camera/lens on a tripod, of course. Handheld HD video is creamy smooth, with no jitter. I have a couple of wish list items for this lens. First, it would be good to have at least f2.8 at the wide end, and it would also be great to have the aperture wider than f5.6 at the telephoto end. Fortunately, the GX8 camera is sensitive, so there doesn't seem to be much of a penalty in that regard. Second, it would be nice for this lens to go just a bit wider at the wide end, perhaps 12mm instead of 14mm. If you shoot video -- including 4K video -- this is a good lens that covers most kinds of shooting. The lens feels well made and it works smoothly, and it captures clean images. Just remember that you get only lens stabilization when shooting video with Panasonic's 4K cameras. The in-body stabilization works only at HD video resolution and not 4K.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really satisfying lens - a workhorse on the GH5 Clear, sharp and nice color rendition. Great working range for all-around run-and-gun photo/video work on the GH5, emphasis on video. The OIS is good, but not superb, for video .. it does jerk into place when it latches onto objects during handheld pans. It was purchased with GH5 to replace my Sony PXW-X70 for handheld work on the boat. I have not yet tested/compared the stabilization of this lens combined with the GH5's IBIS, which I am hoping works better than the X70's stabilization. I don't notice any horrible distortion at either end of the zoom range, but something tells me there is some .. it's just that I have not been offended (yet?) by unnatural bulges in walls or bent ridgelines or poles. I will likely back this lens up with another, a 9-14mm, and adapt to Canon glass for crazy telephoto stuff. Build quality seems very good, and I don't regret buying this lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would buy it again and recommend it to others 4.5 stars would actually be closer. My Oly 25mm f/1.8 is a tad bit sharper. I traded in my Nikon D610 for an Olympus PEN-F looking for smaller, lighter -- something that would just be easier to carry and handle. I started with 2 very small lenses, Panasonic 12-32 f/3.5-5.6 and 35-100 f/4-5.6. Those are excellent, tiny lenses, but swapping them became so much of a hassle, due to joint and minor mobility issues, that I often would not even bother using the camera, or at least skipping some shots because I didn't want to change lenses. I decided to go with this lens (the Panasonic 14-140). My expectations were low, but I am very happy with the purchase. Pleasantly surprised, to say the least. I haven't done any real testing (such as a 4-corner test), but the pictures I've seen so far have exceeded my initial hopes, especially considering it just barely fit in my budgetary constraints. I've encountered no problems using it with the PEN-F, including issues of color-fringing, etc. (And I updated the firmware of the PEN-F to 2.0 almost as soon as it was offered.) Using the OV3 software update, I was able to successfully update the firmware for this lens. The ONLY problem with this lens is that it no longer fits in a pocket! < g> Oh well, aging requires adapting. I'd recommend this lens to both friends and family.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from bad lens with loose fitting i owned the older version of this 14-140mm f4. which is an excellent lens. but this new version f/3.5 is smaller, lighter and has a fitting problem in that whenever you move the lens you can hear something loose inside the barrel probably has some loose play. i returned it for an exchange and got another one with the same problem so i believe this is a product problem plastic or cheaper material was used to produce this lens instead of metal. I hated it when you bought a second lens because the first one was good that they changed the second one on you making it cheaper in material and all that
