Tamron SP 45mm f/1.8 Di VC USD Overview

Slightly wider than the venerable 50mm standard focal length, the Canon EF mount SP 45mm f/1.8 Di VC USD from Tamron presents a unique perspective and pairs it with a sophisticated optical layout and VC image stabilization for enhanced image quality. One Low Dispersion element and two aspherical elements help to control a variety of aberrations and distortions for consistent and even illumination and sharpness, as well as reduced color fringing, and eBAND and BBAR coatings work to suppress flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, this 45mm f/1.8 lens is also characterized by a ring-type USD motor, which provides quick, quiet autofocus performance with full-time manual focus capabilities. An inner focusing design and Floating System are also used, and aid in achieving a minimum focusing distance of 11.4" with a maximum magnification of 1:3.4. The lens' construction is also notable in its inclusion of various seals to protect against moisture, as well as a fluorine-coated front element to guard against fingerprints, smudging, and water.

A normal-length prime, this 45mm lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF mount DSLRs, and is also compatible with APS-C models where it will provide a 72mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also avails selective focus control.
One LD (Low Dispersion) element helps to minimize chromatic aberrations in order to achieve greater clarity with reduced color fringing.
Two aspherical elements correct for spherical and comatic aberrations, as well as distortion, for consistent edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination throughout the aperture range, as well as a reduction of sagittal comatic flare.
Ring-type USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) motor is employed for fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance that benefits both stills and video recording. This motor also enables full-time manual focus control without having to shift into a dedicated MF mode.
Moisture-resistant construction incorporates seals around the lens mount and other areas to benefit working in inclement conditions. Additionally, a fluorine coating has been applied to the front lens element to repel water, fingerprints, and smudges for easier cleaning of the lens surface.
eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) and BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coatings have been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy.
VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization is incorporated into the lens' design to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting in low-light conditions.
A Floating System is employed that moves a single group of elements to control focus in order to provide faster AF response as well as a minimum focusing distance of 11.4" and maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.4 for enhanced close-up shooting.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm produces a pleasing out-of-focus quality when working with shallow depth of field techniques.

The lens is almost PERFECT! It does suffer a bit from green and purple fringing, but Its still an AMAZING lens!

If more lenses were this good, I'd own fewer!

Do you ever ponder which prime to select from your collection; a newer, many-element super sharp one or a vintage fewer-element artful manual focus lens? If so, you will likely agree that this lens is the best of both worlds. I sold my Sigma Art 50mm, bought this and had enough left over for a vintage 20mm. Beautiful color, great micro-contrast, fast focus without searching even in low light, great vibration reduction (let it spin up for a fraction of a second), very sharp, costs much less than competitors, light weight, great bokeh and able to focus so close to almost be considered a micro! What's not to like?

It’s not best lens I have used but it’s a good quality started lens. I got this for my daughter who is a sophomore in high school and is part of the school newspaper and year book. It’s a good option to learn on. It’s basic enough that it’s not overwhelming.

I'm a serious photo hobbyist. I don't have the big bucks to buy the expensive gear I dream of owning. So I am careful about what I do buy so that I get the best value for what I can afford. The Tamron SP 45 is a great value and welcomed addition to my gear. I mainly do landscape photography but have done some portraits with it and was very pleased with the quality of photos it produced. It is solidly built so I expect it to last a long time. This lens has become my go to lens.

Superb normal lens

I bought this lens because I'm a nut for the normal range of lenses. The standard old 50mm remains my most used focal length despite the number of other focal lengths I own. I was also pushed over the edge in buying it because it was selling for $200 off here at B&H and the lens has stabilization, a useful feature. I'm using the Tamron 45mm on Nikon D610, D700, D800 and D810 bodies. I am impressed. First off, I'm a long time photographer. At one time I was a PJ but I've long since retired and now I just enjoy shooting for myself. The vast majority of my photos are B&W and I'm in love with gray tones. The Tamron knocked me out with its ability to render those gray tones. It's just beautiful. The detail it produces is stunning. Many of my photos are abstractions and the Tamron can bring out textures with incredible detail. Overall, it's better in most areas than by Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G and Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D lenses. It doesn't have the look of my oldest Nikon 50mm lenses from the 60s and 70s but the Tamron does have a unique look all its own that I do treasure. I've always avoided off-brand lenses in the past. But this lens has changed my mind about that. Since using the 45mm, I've also bought the Tamron SP 35mm f/1.8 lens as well. Another excellent lens I treasure for it's great rendition of grays.

The Tamron SP 45mm F1.8 Di VC USD lens is the only 45mm lens manufactured by Tamron. They do not have an older version of this 45mm f/1.8 lens.

You may or may not have to update the firmware, it is difficult to know which lenses are updated and which are not. However, at the time of this repsonse, going forward, all the lenses in our inventory should have the latest firmware.

I tried the Tamron 45mm lens on the Canon C200 when that camera first came out and the electronics were not compatible. Has there been a firmware update to this lens which now allows for the lens aperture and auto focus to work with the C200?

The only Auto Focus lenses that will work perfectly with the Dual CMOS AF System on the C200 are Canon EF Auto Focus lenses. The results will vary with 3rd party options.

I just got this lens and when I shoot on Auto at ...

I just got this lens and when I shoot on Auto at night it usually shoots at f2.8. I just did some fireworks shots and they were all f2.5-f3.2, and when I realized that I had to manually switch to f1.8. Is there something wrong with this copy of the lens? My sigma 24-105 automatically shoots wide open at f4 usually, do f1.8 lenses usually not shoot at 1.8 on Auto? I would rather this shoot at 1.8 at night to keep iso's low. Shooting on a Canon 6d.

The Sigma 24-105mm is an F4 lens, which is the fastest it will need to shoot and in a darker environment it is more than likely to use that F-Stop. Depending on the other settings you have your camera may not have felt F1.8 was needed and shot at a higher F Stop. You may need to bring down your ISO or change your shutter to shoot at F1.8.
