Designed primarily for Mac users running 4K workflows, file storage, and high-speed sharing, the TVS-871T 8-Bay Thunderbolt 2 Turbo vNAS from QNAP is a high-performance Thunderbolt 2 DAS/NAS/iSCSI SAN multi-mode storage solution in a compact ATX form factor. It helps prevent the restriction of a DAS connecting to only one device and helps lower the cost of 10GbE network environments. Attaching the TVS-871T to your Mac using a Thunderbolt 2 cable makes it accessible in the Finder, while its Thunderbolt & Ethernet dual networking capabilities help simultaneously share files across multiple devices using SMB/CIFS, NFS and AFP protocols for sharing across Windows, Mac, and Linux/UNIX networks. When configured in iSCSI SAN block-based mode and after an iSCSI target is created, it can be accessed with your computer through Thunderbolt IP.

question
Does this model of Qnap have hot-swappable option for changing out hard drives???
The QNAP TVS-871T can hot swap a failed drive for a good one, and will automatically start the rebuild process. Note that performance will be reduced while a failed drive is in the array, as well as when it is rebuilding.

question
Is there any driver required for a PC windows to detect a QNAP Thunderbolt NAS? My Macbook Pro can detect the NAS via Thunderbolt. But my PC cannot. My workstation: Asus X99 WS-E mobo + Asus ThunderboltEXII Dual expansion card with Windows 10. and the latest Intel Thunderbolt Driver.
If you cannot find the Q nap on the network, you must download a utility program from their support page. If you follow their instructions correctly for installation it should be able to be detected in windows

question
Does this come with drives installed? Description says 2x2TB. Should I assume from that that there is a 2TB drive in two of the eight bays?
What I find is that the QNap product is so powerful but yet confusing in navigating what to do; tutorial videos are helpful, but does not cover everything, especially their manual. You'll have to enable network services, including thunderbolt. Just call the QNap support they are very helpful
