ZEISS 21mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

An expansive wide-angle for Nikon F mount DSLRs, the Milvus 21mm f/2.8 ZF.2 Lens from ZEISS utilizes a Distagon design to control distortion and produce sharp, clean imagery with a dynamic perspective. A floating elements system is also employed for consistent performance throughout the aperture range and four anomalous partial dispersion elements are featured to control chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and sharpness. For minimizing flare and ghosting, an enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to benefit working in difficult lighting conditions.

Its manual focus design is complemented by a rubberized focus ring for fine-tuned, precise control over your focus position. This ZF.2 lens also features a manual aperture ring that can be manually de-clicked for silent, stepless switching between aperture setting to benefit video applications. Additionally, Milvus-series lenses also feature an equally aesthetic and durable frosted, anodized metal lens barrel surface along with a weather-sealed construction to protect against dust and moisture.

This 21mm f/2.8 lens is designed for FX format Nikon F mount DSLRs, and can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 31.5mm equivalent focal length
Distagon optical design incorporated four anomalous partial dispersion glass elements to greatly control distortions and aberrations, as well as increase sharpness and clarity.
Floating elements system maintains consistent performance when working with both close-up and distant subjects.
Enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating controls ghosting and flare for high contrast, color-neutral imagery.
Wide-angle perspective pairs with a minimum focusing distance of 8.7" for exaggerating foreground subjects and creating a broad sense of space.
Manual focus design is benefitted by laser-engraved focusing and depth of field scales, along with an IR position dot and hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.
The manual aperture ring has clicked indicators throughout aperture range. Using the included De-Click Tool, this ring can be mechanically 'de-clicked' for smooth, silent rotation throughout the aperture range; making it ideal for video applications.
Weather-resistant construction includes internal seals to guard against dust and moisture as well as a blue sealing ring at the lens mount to protect the lens-camera interface.
All-metal lens barrel has a frosted, anodized surface along with a rubberized focusing ring for both durability and improved tactile control.

    ZEISS 21mm f/2.8 reviews

    Milvus 21mm f/2.8 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Balanced excellence Among other things, designing a lens is an exercise in balancing factors that are often in conflict. For instance high speed versus available depth of field. Another is build quality versus low cost. My photographic interest is landscape. For me, not having f/1.4 means little compared to having high quality depth of field at small aperture sizes. Having smooth, easily controlled manual focus leads to more creative control as does an easily readable depth of field scale on the lens. Finally, build quality means lenses I use constantly will have a very long life requiring no additional investments in replacements. I still regularly use a Linhof with a Zeiss lens my father bought in the 1940's.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Same Zeiss quality.. new modern body I have been renting one of these for a couple of weeks now. Today is the first chance I have had to actually shoot with it due to work and weather. This lens is PHENOMENAL! It holds the same quality has every other Zeiss I have shot with. Very little to no barrel distortion when shooting on an even plane. Fantastic color and VERY sharp. It is built very solid and has a great feel in your hand. It is all metal. Not metal/plastic or plastic like most other brands. Even the lens hood is metal and fairly thick. It attaches very smoothly and very tightly. You don't have to worry about it coming off. The focus ring is so smooth, you hardly know you're turning it until it stops on either side. It also doesn't stand out like the focus rings on the older models. This one is very neatly designed into the lens barrel and is made of rubber instead of plastic as the older lenses have. Infinity is a nice hard stop and is fairly accurate. I have seen no CA with the copy I have. It does have some slight pincushion distortion in the center, but this is also a 21mm wide angle lens. They are going to have some sort of distortion. The elves line also boasts the weatherproofing seal on the mount. I had no issues while shooting with this lens with moisture this morning. I shot a beach marsh sunrise in 35 degree weather. I did have a little lens flare, but I suspect it wasn't from the lens itself. The lens I have has a UV filter that the rental company put on it and they used thread locker to keep out from being removed. That was very disappointing since I was shooting directly into the sun and had an extra piece of glass to cause flare and reflections that i could do-nothing about. This lens is worth a try if you are thinking about it. To me it feels better than the older models and looks better as well. Same quality, if not better. Zeiss continue to be the best for a reason. The don't produce inferior lenses. They target a specific type of photographer. and those who want the best, buy Zeiss for a reason.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning I love this lens, and I still get excited to use it after a year! It is manual so you need to focus manually with the ring on the lens. I don't have a problem with this myself. But the aperture does work with my camera functions. So I can use my dial on the camera to change the Aperture. And this lens has a great variety of aperture settings to use. I have been using it primarily for landscapes, and it is crazy how sharp this lens is. Of course I strive to take the best picture possible initially, and I try to frame the shot I want so I don't need to crop later. But if my initial shot isn't perfect or I want to zoom in on an image in post I can just crop and crop and crop. I have a Nikon D810 which also helps the cropping factor because it is a full frame camera. I compare this to my 28mm Nikon, my 24-120mm Nikon, and my 24-70 Tamron. These are the wide-mid range lenses that I can compare it to, and the Zeiss 21mm is far superior. I get such amazing consistently in my pictures with this lens. The sharpness is mind boggling. It is a expensive lens, but I haven't seen anything better so I do think it was well worth it, and I wish I had the entire set!!
