Rokinon 50mm f/1.2 overview

  • 1Description

A truly fast prime offering a portrait-length perspective, this black 50mm f/1.2 Lens from Rokinon is designed for Canon EF-M mirrorless cameras where it provides an 80mm equivalent focal length. The combination of the long perspective and bright f/1.2 maximum aperture enables extensive control over focus placement, which is further complemented by the manual focus design and rounded nine-blade diaphragm for a smooth bokeh quality. The lens construction incorporates a pair of aspherical elements to minimize chromatic aberrations and distortions for a cleaner, sharper image quality void of color fringing. An Ultra Multi-Coating has also been applied to boost contrast by suppressing lens flare and ghosting.

This 50mm f/1.2 lens is designed for APS-C-format Canon EF-M mount mirrorless cameras and provides an 80mm equivalent focal length.
Bright, fast f/1.2 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also avails extensive control over shallow depth of field.
Two aspherical elements help to control chromatic and comatic aberrations in order to achieve greater sharpness and clarity.
An Ultra Multi-Coating has been applied to all lens elements in order to suppress lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy.
This manual focus lens has a non-rotating 62mm front filter mount to better enable the use of polarizing, graduated ND, and other filter types that require precise positioning.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality when using selective focus or shallow depth of field techniques.

    Rokinon 50mm f/1.2 reviews

50mm f/1.2 Lens for Canon EF-M (Black) is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect creative lens for EF-M mount I bought this lens with some experience using manual lenses before. Once mounted on my EOS M3, the lens feels solid and focusing was not a problem using the integrated magnifier and peaking focus option. The use of Canon EVF-DC1 viewfinder is also strong recommended. Lens focus ring is a little tought and it has a long travel from minimum distance to infinity, but enough to focus with precision. With that on mind, I purchased this lens only for adult portraits and pics of static objects. It's not suitable to shoot children or action photography. Prior to this lens, I had been using a Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM with EOS EF to EF-M adapter. The 50mm 1.4 was fine an easy to use but its image quality is average to my taste, specially with apertures below 2.8. This rokinon shines in IQ from f2. Sharpening and contrast are aceptable at wider apertures, and always better than the Canon and with smoother bokeh. Vignetting is also visible, but nothing to worry about it. Overall, is an excellent performing lens and optically superior to use than the Canon standard lens.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dead out of the box For Canon EOS M3: I really wanted this lens to work...f/1.2 for only $500! I knew that this was a manual focus lens and needed to be set up in the software. I followed the instructions provided, but after trying for over an hour I couldn't get the camera to take a picture. Also, the lens hood was loose...poor tolerances. Plus side is that viewing through the lens I good tell that it does have a very nice narrow depth of field and potential for good pictures. I returned this lens. I did buy the Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM Lens, which is designed for this camera and was pleased with the bokeh.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I wish sharpness was a bit better I really love this lens in terms of design, build quality, aesthetics, color rendition... and how it looks on my EOS M and EOS M5 (pictures attached). However, I had issues with sharpness. Nothing shot seems to be sharp. Canon 50mm f1.8 which costs 3 times cheaper was sharper at similar F-stops. Even 60$ lenses bought on ebay were sharper, so I had to return back. Not sure if the problem was with my copy only though, since the other reviewer doesn't seem to have this problem.
