A MUST for 'run & gun' shooters!

I live in a typically VERY BRIGHT location; Arizona. I often use 'high' value ND filters when shooting outside. (1.2ND and up, go to about 2.4 regularly.) I have purchased not one but two of these Tiffen MRT VD kits. They're terrific. They allow you to dial in any level of ND you need (up to a point). It's not the same as having ND built into your camera, where sometimes it's too week or too strong. With this Tiffen product, you can dial it in perfectly. The longer the lens, the more you can use... I've found that wide angle lenses typically don't allow as much/deep of ND as telephoto lenses. I've not really used the warm/cool effect, but if I ever need it, I'm glad I have that ability. One thing to look out for is the dreaded X in your footage. I'm not alone in learning this the 'hard way,' I'm sure. I shot a time-lapse, and cranked the VND all the way. Unfortunately, there was an X in my footage. I was able to 'repair/fix' it in post... but that took time. One needs to learn how far they can push the VND before the X appears. I liked the first one so much, I bought a second one! One really cool aspect of this kit is that if it's DAMAGED, one can 'repair' it themselves! I had a customer DROP mine... broke both filters. Instead of having to purchase a completely new kit, I was able to replace the glass portions, which were less expensive! Tiffen is such a great company, and truly believe in top flight customer service!

It will be easier to one person shooting!

Great commodity. It was purchased for use in the Matte Box MB-T04 of Tilta. Width than the filter tray of Tilta is 8mm, vertical is 20mm, small. I was DIY with an acrylic plate.

When set in Vari-ND mode with is the ND strength ...

When set in Vari-ND mode with is the ND strength at minimum and maximum setting? Is there any colour cast? Does it create an X at any stage?
Asked by: Matthew
The VND is 2 to 8 stops. There is no color cast. It could potentially create the X Bar Effect (as all VNDs can) when shooting at very wide focal lengths and a very dark density setting on the VND at the same time. This is due to optical physics, to eliminate change the density, focal length or both until the effect dissapears.

question

From what I saw in a demo you have to stack the filters to get the variable ND effect, but would you get a polarization effect as well as the stops of ND?
Asked by: Rob L.
The Multi Rota Tray is a 3 in 1 system. When using just the polarization filter which comes installed you have a circular polarizing filter. When you add the drop in filter one way you have a warming/cooling effect when you rotate the main filter. When you flip this filter over you now have a Variable Neutral Density filter. When the MRT is in this configuration it functions strictly as a VND filter. The two polarizing filters stacked together eliminate any polarizing effect and product the VND effect instead.
