Dynalite Baja B6 overview

  • 1Description

Ideal for location photographers whose work takes them far away from an AC outlet, the Baja B6 Battery-Powered 2-Light Kit with Case from Dynalite provides a studio quality lighting solution for shooting on the road. The kit is comprised of 2 Baja B6 monolights, each with a Lithium-ion battery, charger, umbrella reflector and radio receiver. A standard transmitter is provided to control output and turn the lights on or off and a padded, soft-sided carry case is provided to store and transport the kit.

Extremely portable and featuring a 2.4 GHz power control wireless receiver, the Baja B6 Battery-Powered Monolight is a 600 Ws strobe that can be taken on-location without the need for AC cables thanks to its removable, rechargeable Lithium-ion battery that provides 400 full-power flashes and thousands of minimum-power flashes on a single charge. Boasting recycling times 0.05 - 4.3 sec., power can be adjusted in 1/10 stop increments over a 7-stop range for maximum flexibility. An LED modeling light is used to conserve battery power.

Among the Baja B6's other attributes are fast flash durations ranging from an action-freezing 1/12,800 to 1/500 second and High Speed Sync up to 1/8,000 sec. is available for most Canon and Nikon DSLRs. To take advantage of HSS Canon users need to purchase dedicated DYBRT616C Transmitter. Nikon users need to purchase dedicated BYBRT616N Transmitter and also 2 DYBRR616N dedicated receivers. The Nikon transmitter and receivers are available in kit # DYBRT616KTN. A traditional built-in optical slave is included too, for triggering the Baja with another flash. A stroboscopic C-mode is also available for 5, 10, or 15 flashes per second. The Baja B6 includes a glass dome, metal light stand mount, standard Bowens accessory mount, wireless receiver, umbrella reflector and a protective cap.

Dynalite Baja B6 reviews

Baja B6 Battery-Powered 2-Light Kit with Case is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy I bought the B6 over the B4 The B6 is a big plus over the B4, if you plan on using the HSS or T settings, those extra 200ws's will be huge! I initially bought these as mobile portrait lights for their HSS ability. I received a dispatch to photograph a martial arts demonstration. I was able to shoot fantastic stop action sequences, the units are powerful enough that I was able to over power the dim florescent lights and using T mode I had snappy images that were completely free of motion blur. I equipped my main light with a Medium 11.5 long throw reflector and the second light with the standard 7 reflector that comes with the package. The B6's were able to keep up with my D4s without missing a beat, granted I never shot beyond 4 or 5 frames in a row.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great light with a few small issues I was looking for a powerful portable light that I could use outside and that had hss capabilities. I was originally looking at the profoto b1 kit but that kit is $. The baja kit seemed to do everything the profoto kit would do except ttl and I hardly need ttl anyways so for under $ I figured it would be a win. I have been using the lights for over a month now and I am pretty impressed by them. They seem to be pretty accurate on the color from shot to shot, they are very powerful so shooting outside shouldn't be an issue. I have to figure out the stroboscopic mode but the high speed sync works flawlessly. I do find the light to be of high quality and built very well. Unlike the other reviewer I didn't find it to feel cheap. I said there are a few small issues so I will talk about them here. First the modeling lamp is pretty much useless unless its completely dark. To use ttl you have to buy an additional trigger. To charge the batteries they have to be in the strobe. The case it comes in is good but the stitching is pretty bad. When you mount the modifier it wobbles a little bit, wish it was a more tight fit. When you go to raise the power through the trigger it only goes up in 1/10th increments, I wish there was a way to hold the button down and it go in full stops.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Recommend in Spite of Flaws I have not had time to use extensively however I'm positively impressed with the quick-setup time and light quality. It would have had 5 stars were it not for my surprise to learn that HSS is not controllable from the transmitter which defies logic to some extent. Also, the umbrella bracket works on friction only and there is no way to lock it in. Right now it is so tight that I almost bent an umbrella shaft trying to push it in and I hope that one day it will not be so loose that the wind blows it into someone's face. Even with those negatives I would recommend

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I did buy this again........ I've had Dynalite power packs and lights since 1993 and am still using them - I bought the Baja B4 set and love them - great location and studio lights! I love being able to change the power on each individual light from my camera. I do mostly fine art portraiture so the recycle time works for me if I were shooting fashion it may be a little slow. I wish I would have waited to buy the Baja B6 set as they recycle faster than the B4's and I prefer the higher power - its worth spending more to get the B6's. My only complaint is the modeling lights are not strong and while they work in studio to see my light source they are hard to see what your light is doing on location. Also, wanted to use them for shooting video but the modeling lights don't have enough power to do so. But over all - they are amazing - great for shooting outdooors and indoors. So, yes I would buy again - I have the B4 set and the B6 set. Dynalite is a great company and makes amazing lighting products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these lights! I've been using the dynalite system for years and their old pack and heads were bomb proof and have provided many, many incredible images. I was super excited when these came out, and I especially love the HSS capability. The lights are well built and and they do everything they say they will. They work very well and do not seem to have any glitchy moments. Transition into HSS is a little odd, but once you've done that a handful of times it becomes second nature. I would recommend these to anyone who wants well built lights, with HSS, and the portability of battery powered monolight. I've used them now for product shoots and easily have gotten the 250+ shot at full power over a 8 hour day. I've used them for sports and portraits and I love how portable they are. I highly recommend them. The only problem I encountered, is out of the box, one of the modeling lights would not work / adjust. Dynalite is taking care of the issue. I highly recommend these lights . . . . now I just would like 4 more . . . .

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not that Great Just got the kit in today and was excited to use it. I do a ton of interior work and having a good powerful battery powered strobe set was right up my ally. I was quickly disappointed, however. Perhaps my expectations were a little too high for this product, but here is the breakdown. Overall, feels a little cheap, lots of low end plastic that feels like it may break with any regular use. The latch to attach/remove the cover/speed rings feels very cheap. When attaching a speed ring and small octa, it doesn't feel like it really sits correctly, lots of slop. When trying to remove the speed ring, all that slop made it rather difficult to get off. The screw that locks the head to the stand is pretty small and doesn't really seat the head onto the stand that great. One of them fit tight, the other left some slop. It feels like they could have used a larger screw, especially with the weight of the things. The remote trigger also feels very cheap, and one thing that I found a little annoying was that you need to click the up and down for each 1/10 that you want to adjust the power. Would be nice if you could just hold the +/- for a continuous adjustment. It definitely seems like after so much clicking, it would wear out after maybe 6 months to a year. Also, it didn't seem to register a power change with each click. Skipped every 3rd or so. The clincher on me returning the kit was after about 4 test shots, one of the strobes smoked, the modeling lamp came on, then back off and now doesn't work. Needless to say, there was something messed up with the wiring from the factory. Bottom line, I have some really old Impact 100 strobes from when I first got into photography and those seem to be more solidly built than these things.
