Pentax D FA 24-70mm f/2.8ED SDM WR Overview

A fast, standard zoom featuring a sophisticated optical design, the HD Pentax-D FA 24-70mm f/2.8ED SDM WR Lens from Pentax is designed for use on full-frame K mount DSLRs, as well as APS-C cameras where it provides a 36-105mm equivalent focal length range. An HD coating has also been applied to further benefit working in difficult lighting conditions by suppressing lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color neutrality.

Complementing the optical performance of the lens is a Supersonic Direct-drive Motor, which offers fast, quiet, and quick autofocus performance that is ideal for both stills and video shooting. A weather-resistant construction is also featured, for working in harsh environments, and a Quick-Shift Focus System and zoom lock lever offer intuitive handling and control.

Standard 24-70mm zoom lens is designed for Pentax K mount full-frame DSLRs/SLRs and is also compatible with APS-C models where it will provide a 36-105mm equivalent focal length range.
Fast f/2.8 constant maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range, benefits working in difficult lighting conditions, and offers greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field applications.
A 17 elements in 12 groups design features three extra-low dispersion elements, three aspherical elements, and one anomalous dispersion glass-molded aspherical element. This combination helps to substantially reduce chromatic aberrations and various distortions throughout the zoom range and also offers enhanced sharpness, clarity, and edge-to-edge illumination throughout the aperture range.
An HD coating has been applied to lens elements to minimize flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color neutrality when working in harsh, backlit lighting conditions.
A Supersonic Direct-drive Motor (SDM) benefits autofocus operation with smooth, quiet, and accurate performance to support both stills and video applications.
A weather-resistant construction incorporates five weather seals to protect against moisture for working in inclement conditions.
A rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality when working with selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.
Quick-Shift Focus System lets you manually control focus at any time, even when working in AF mode, by simply rotating the focus ring.
A zoom lock lever prevents the lens from extending under its own weight when carrying.

Pentax 24-70 f/2.8 ED SDM Lens

After a very short time spent with this lens, I am very excited to have added this to my lens collection, and I believe it will be one of my favs and go-to lenses for the foreseeable future. Originally, I purchased it to replace an older Pentax model (of about the same size), specifically for a photo safari to South Africa and Botswana, but due to Covid, have postponed that trip to 2022. Still , that will give me lots of time and opportunities to get used to it . . . it is heavy, but very solid, and I've trusted and used Pentax equipment since my days in Viet Nam ('69-'70). Excellent product, excellent service! RN

Solid Zoom

Although it is rebadge of the Tamron this lens is a solid performer with much of the traditional Pentax feel and solidity. I generally prefer primes when available but for walk around and hiking this is reliable and more than adequate.

Used on a K1 MKII

I just finished doing a photo shoot of a group of seven adults and four dogs, the secession started at 2 PM and I was shooting right into the sun, I had to use a flash to lighten up the group and balance out the light. The lens on a K1 MKII is a beast, fast and sharp, shooting into gives the same problem you get with any camera and lens but it did a good job in bad lighting. Great lens for a great camera

The lens performed as I hoped it would. The images I have been getting from this lens are sharp with plenty of contrast and is a welcome addition to my photo bag.

This Pentax 24-70mm f/2.8 Lens also becomes a macro lens when paired with the Pentax 1.4x HD PENTAX-DA AF Rear TeleConverter. It is much better than the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 because of the absence of the onion ring bokeh from the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC G1 USD lens. With or without teleconverter, I get sharp and great images.

Not a good Pentax lens

Pentax is perfectly capable of making outstanding lenses. Sadly, this is not one of them. This would have been my bread-and-butter lens. The lack of a great 24-70 f/2.8 * is the main reason why I just won't get a Pentax K1-II.

question

what is this lens mount? kaf3? kaf4?
Asked by: Anonymous
It is KAF3. KAF4 is the new mount that the new 55-300 PLM is the only example I'm aware of.

question

Is this lens compatible with the Pentax K20 D?
Asked by: art f.
I believe the K20D uses a mechanical focus linkage while this lens uses electric focusing only, so the automatic focus would not work. The lens is also quite large since it is a full-frame and the K20D does not need a lens this large.

Asked by: Alin
Sorry I didn't respond sooner, but the lense does extend out away from you

Is one of the 5 weather seals at the lens mount so as to keep weather out of the camera?
Asked by: Kenneth
Yes, as with all Pentax WR lens, there is a neoprene like ring that contacts the camera body mount for proper sealing of moisture and dust.
