Canon G3 X overview

  • 1Description

This B&H Kit combines the Canon PowerShot G3 X Digital Camera with the EVF-DC1 Electronic Viewfinder giving you the option of eye-level composition. The G3 X has a large 20.2-megapixel 1.0" High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and 25x optical zoom lens with a fast maximum aperture range of f/2.8-5.6. The zoom range extends from a wide angle 24mm equivalent to a super telephoto 600mm equivalent. Also, operating at odd angles, or when taking a selfie, is benefited by the inclusion of a 3.2" 1.62m-dot multi-angle tilting touchscreen LCD.

When combining the High-Sensitivity Sensor with the DIGIC 6 processor, the Canon HS System is created, providing excellent low-light performance up to ISO 12,800 as well as a plethora of other capabilities. Continuous shooting at up to 5.9 fps is possible with no buffer time to slow you down, and the High-Speed AF System will lock focus in as fast as 0.14 seconds. Focusing is also accurate through the implementation of 31 points across the frame. Another feature of this combo is full HD video recording at up to 60p and the ability to output the video live over an HDMI cable.

The EVF-DC1 offers an XGA LCD with a 2.36MP resolution and displays all shooting information found on the camera's LCD screen. Mounted easily on the camera's accessory shoe, the electronic viewfinder features a high eyepoint, a dioptric adjustment range of -3.0 to +1.0, and 90° upward tilt capability, helping to enable steady shooting even on an angle. The camera can be directed to switch automatically between the LCD and the viewfinder with an eyepiece sensor or can be set manually with a dedicated button. Brightness can be set independently from the camera's monitor.

Reach out and capture distant scenes and subjects without compromise thanks to the large 20.2-megapixel 1.0" High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and 25x optical zoom lens present on the PowerShot G3 X Digital Camera from Canon. The Canon lens offers a fast maximum aperture range of f/2.8-5.6 for operation in a range of conditions while the zoom range extends from a wide angle 24mm equivalent to a super telephoto 600mm equivalent. Also, operating at odd angles, or when taking a selfie, is benefitted by the inclusion of a 3.2" 1.62m-dot multi-angle tilting touchscreen LCD.

Another feature of this combo is Full HD video recording at up to 60p and the ability to output the video live over an HDMI cable.

Body design is critical when it comes to compact long zoom cameras, and the G3 X delivers with multiple physical control points. A continuous ring is available on the lens barrel while an exposure compensation dial, mode dial, front dial, and controller wheel are also present to make adjustments. Additionally, it has built-in Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC (Near Field Communication) for direct connection with smartphones, tablets, and the CS100 Connect Station.

20.2MP High-Sensitivity CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 6 Image Processor
The 20.2-megapixel High-Sensitivity 1" CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6 image processor work in concert to produce high resolution still imagery and Full HD video recording with notable low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 12,800. The combination of these two technologies creates the Canon HS SYSTEM, which provides effective low-light sensitivity with minimal noise and enhanced clarity to truly benefit impressive image making in dimly-lit situations. The processor also contributes to overall speed throughout the camera, including High-Speed AF, Full HD 1080p video recording at 60 fps, and a full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 5.9 fps with no buffer limit.

The redeveloped sensor and processor also combine to enable RAW imaging with 14-bit signal processing, the same used in Canon's EOS DSLRs, to provide high image quality with expanded post-processing capabilities.
    Canon 25x Optical Zoom Lens
With a wide 24-600mm equivalent focal length, the G3 X can capture wide vistas and distant subjects without issue. It has a bright f/2.8-5.6 maximum aperture range that will benefit capture in low-light conditions. Also, Intelligent Image Stabilization is built-in to ensure sharp imagery during long shutter speeds and telephoto focal lengths.
    Full HD 1080p Video Recording
Record Full HD 1920 x 1080p video at up to 60 fps with the G3 X. Advanced features include an external microphone, a headphone jack, and manual controls during recording. This all works together for capturing brilliant images in a wide variety of shooting conditions. Also, it has HDMI output for quick playback on an HDTV or recording using an external device.
High-Speed AF System & Continuous Shooting
Lock focus in just 0.14 seconds with the High-Speed AF System. Thirty-one AF points ensure sharp imagery throughout the frame. When combined with the fast 5.9 fps continuous shooting rate, which has no buffer time, users can be sure they capture the decisive moment.
    3.2" 1.62m-Dot Tilting Touchscreen LCD
Take selfies or work at odd angles with the multi-angle capacitive 3.2" touchscreen LCD on the rear of the G3 X. This screen also has a resolution of 1.62m-dots which display sharp, clear imagery for video or composition.
    Physical Controls & Design
With a physical control ring on the lens, an exposure compensation dial, mode dial, front dial, and controller wheel, photographers looking for tactile operation will be very satisfied. This provides users fast, intuitive access to commonly adjusted settings as well as the ability to dial in certain movements through muscle memory. The body is also compact while still featuring a contoured grip and a long zoom range.
    Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity with NFC
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables seamless and instant transferring of photos and videos to mobile devices, home computers, and to select social networking sites. Linking Android devices to the camera is aided through the incorporation of NFC, which facilitates connection simply by tapping the two devices. A dedicated Mobile Device Connect Button is available too, to further establish a simplified means for linking both iOS and Android devices. Additionally, Automatic Switching via the Image Sync function works to automatically sync images with any discovered and linked PC within a designated network or, alternatively, images are temporarily sent to the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY for later transferring.

When connected, the mobile device can also be used to remotely control and release the camera's shutter, self-timer, flash, and zoom from a distance, as well as display a live view image on the linked device's screen. This connectivity also enables compatibility with the CS100 Connect Station for transferring files for backup and remote access.

Canon G3 X reviews

PowerShot G3 X Digital Camera with EVF-DC1 Electronic Viewfinder is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camera,no regret I was concerned about previous reviews about slow focus times, but so far I have shot over 500 photos with no issue. Half were wild life where maximum zoom was required, half were made at a Lacrosse game. I had no blurred shots and only 6 shoots where the focus was behind or in front of the intended subject. I am impressed with the quality of the photographs, my choice was between the Sony RX-100 5 and the Canon G3 The zoom was the deciding factor. It was also an easier decision with the included view finder bundled with the kit. I have no regret with the purchase, as usually great service from B & H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great features in a small package This is a really nice camera that takes quite good photos using its one inch sensor. I like setting my own preferences rather than using auto and the menus and dials are quite easy to use. The articulated EVF that attaches to the hot shoe is very convenient to use and can be tilted so that you are looking straight down into the viewfinder. This has come in handy in several situations for me. Minor annoyances include reviewing photos when shot in servo mode and the need for an adaptor ring to attach filters. Both of these are easily managed though, and barely detract from this convenient little dynamo of a camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great all around camera! I've had this camera a few weeks and I find it amazing. The photo's that I've taken are terrific. I bought the add-on viewfinder and it's great too! I bought the lens hood with the filter adapter to use a UV (and Circular Polarizer) filter and I'm surprised that I can take the hood on and off so easily without taking off the adaptor with filter. I've also found I haven't needed a flash even with indoor shots yet; great low-light capacity. I'm truly impressed. This is a great walk around every day camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great 2nd Camera Bought this, like so many, because I am going on a trip and did not want to take my Canon DSLR with extra lenses. I have had the camera a couple of weeks playing around to get use to it and the quality has not disappointed me. Sometimes in auto mode, it was hard to focus on the subject. I am now experimenting with the AF-Point Zoom in manual modes.Learning more every time I use the camera. I did buy this bundled with the electronic viewfinder and I consider this a necessary accessory. The viewfinder rotates up 90 degrees, which is a great feature. Comes in handy when taking low shots and you can sit in a chair and hold the camera very steady. I also purchased the lens hood. Will have more to report when I get back from my Alaska trip.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worthy Companion on the Trail I bought this after using my b-in-law's in Germany last year. Right out of the camera with no editing, colors were great, focus sharp, even though I still shot aperture preferred on landscape and still used the Auto setting almost not at all. In other words: good photos are still the result of good camera skills, so the camera helps out more and more, but it still takes human skill to work magic. I've done day trips with my camera pack, even carrying my 5D MkIII w/11-24mm lens weighing the pack down and, used properly, this is the landscape of the gods lens on what is still a great body. But, after leaving that in the car while we did Rim To Rim in Grand Canyon last November, the limitations of this camera's setup were less obvious than it's really good results. I read about some of the new mirrorless gear doing remarkable things, and that might be the wave of the future. But, if you're not looking to invest in a whole new gear paradigm, this fully usable camera with 24-600mm lens does a very credible job. Direct sun shots somewhat baffle it, as do, come to think of it, some rear-sun angles. But, with ISO locked on 100 and a steady rest, colors come out great in longer exposures, and while what I think was a wolverine 400+ yards away on Cascade Pass two weeks ago isn't 'tack sharp', that it was shot with the lens in full extension at such a distance and came out as well as it did, was enough to convince me this is a very worthy camera, without spending $2,000+ on all new gear. And, I can always whip out my 5D if I need something better, though, this camera comes close enough to leave the heavy gear in the car.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Chronic lens errors have made this unusable This was a great super-zoom compact camera--for a while. It was very handy to keep in the car for quick super-zoom shots of roadside wildlife. But now, after nearly nine months of use, it suffers from constant lens errors that shut the camera down and require a restart. The lens cannot find focus and appears to "hunt" slowly across the focus range, then beeps and shuts down with the message "Lens error. Will shut down automatically. Restart camera." At first these errors predominantly occurred at zooms over 300mm, but now they also occur in most low light situations as well. Since this covers the conditions in which I use the camera most frequently, it has become completely unusable since the errors now occur routinely. I consulted the web for answers and found a lot of discussion on this topic (google "canon g3x lens error" for examples). It appears to be a frequent problem with the g3x and other Canon point and shoots as well, but I could find no consistent or reliable solutions except returning the camera--unfortunately mine is beyond the warranty period. Based on the report of one person who did return the camera, they received a refurbished replacement camera that soon developed the same problem. I am most unhappy with this is rather expensive small camera!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from G3 I am still learning about this camera. The lens is amazing great! I am not a fan of the flip screen at the back. The electronic viewfinder is super. I would have preferred it to be solidly attached to the camera ... The flash is fine but it’s structure looks very weakly attached. Now this camera has everything needed for all my needs without carrying 3-4 lenses! I will be able to give a more detailed review a few months later.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice little camera A great little camera - I use it when I cannot take my full frame into a concert or other event. The lens is a lot higher profile than that of the G15, but the increased sensor size and zoom are worth the bigger camera.
