Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Overview

A standard zoom covering wide-angle to short telephoto perspectives, the graphite EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Lens from Canon offers a 24-72mm equivalent focal length range when used with APS-C-format EOS M-series mirrorless cameras. The optical design incorporates three aspherical elements, one of which is glass-molded and the other two are precision molded, in order to control chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range. The lens placement has also been optimized, and coatings have been applied, to reduce flare and ghosting for increased contrast and clarity when photographing in difficult lighting conditions.

Benefitting handheld shooting with slower shutter speeds, an Optical Image Stabilizer has been incorporated into the lens design to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 3.5 stops. A lead-screw-type STM stepping motor is also featured, which produces fast, smooth and near-silent autofocus performance to support both stills and video applications. For increased control, full-time manual focus operation is also available for making fine-tuned focus adjustments. Additionally, pairing well with the compact form factor of the EOS M-series of cameras, this lens also features a retracting design to shorten its overall length to just 1.75" long during travel and storage.

Standard wide-to-short tele zoom lens for EF-M mount APS-C format mirrorless cameras provides a 24-72mm equivalent focal length range.
One glass-molded (GMo) aspherical element and two precision-molded (PMo) aspherical elements are featured in the optical design, and help to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions for greater sharpness and clarity.
Optimized lens placement and coatings help to control lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color neutrality.
Optical Image Stabilizer technology compensates for up to 3.5 stops of camera shake to better enable taking sharp handheld photos in difficult lighting conditions.
Lead-screw-type STM stepping motor offers fast, quiet, smooth, and accurate autofocus performance that is ideal for video recording as well as still shooting.
Full-time manual focus mode (AF+MF) lets you instantly switch to manual focus control in AF mode for making fine-tuned adjustments.

Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Reviews

Lenses are NOT cheap; great lens.

We also bought the Canon EOS M50 Mirrorless Camera with 15-45mm Lens that came with this lens. Unfortunately, the lens was not put away correctly and became cracked and unusable. We realized that lens is not cheap and quite the investment when shopping around. Thankfully, B&H understood this somewhere in the universe, and we could buy the same lens to replace the broken one. We host live events and do media training, so the camera captures videos and pictures to show off our best work. If you're looking for a great starter camera, the Canon EOS M50 Mirrorless Camera with 15-45mm Lens is an excellent choice. We were recommended this camera to record shows on, and we do not regret this purchase.

Great lens if not for the lock button

This is a great lens if you dont want to take quick candid pictures (family!).  Its sharp and fast. BUT to deploy it, you have to hold this tiny tab down and turn the zoom ring -- not something I can do quickly.  So, if my lens it not deployed, I cant take a candid photo of the kids...

Surprisingly good kit lens

I bought the M50 with this lens and the 55-200. I have been continuously surprised by the clarity and fast auto focus of this lens. Although I have several ef-s and ef lenses as well as a third ef-m now, I find this and the 55-200 used most often. This is a very good walk around lens and the super lightweight of the camera/lens combo have been so nice on my painful back. While I have sold kit lenses in the past because of their mediocre performance, this one will be a keeper for years to come.

The Five-ounce wonder

Bought this as the kit with a new M-50 camera (which also rates 5 stars in my book). It is light, small, and sharp enough for its role as a general purpose lens. The IS is a plus. It's great for family events. Caution: Be careful or get the hood for this lens, as the front element is way up front.

Hard to believe image quality! The 15-45mm focal length (24-72mm to us old film geezers) covers about 90+ percent of my walk-around candids. Razor-sharp and excellent contrast. LOVE IT!

I am fresh to distinguishing which lens is for what kind of job ... I’ve found that this particular lens ? is the lens for general shots with my specific mirrorless camera I got w/o any lens . But my intention is to continue studying the science and art of photography..& always w/canon tools

Stunned

I am always hesitant to purchase kit lenses, but I did a lot of research on this one and it had good reviews. I purchased it with the Canon M50 camera. I tested it on video and I was able to zoom in and out without a problem. I then tried the EFM 22mm lens, which was great for a nice, fixed view. I also purchased the mount for my EF lenses. I tried the 50mm lens as well. Overall, I decided this will be by go-to travel lens for still photography. I wanted something small and lightweight that works great. This one does the trick and I am very happy with that. I am not a professional, but I am a very strong photo enthusiast who doesn't want to carry around huge cameras and lenses on vacation. I am very happy with this lens.

question

Does front element rotate when zooming or focusing? I.e., will it work well with a circular polarizer?
Asked by: Anonymous
The front element and filter threads do not rotate either with the zoom or with focusing. The filter threads are 49mm for the 15-45lens and if you use a polarizer you should be aware that the hood may have difficulty clearing the polarizer filter (since they tend to be wider than normal UV filters).

Can you put a lense like this on a canon t5i?

No. It only works on M type bodies. The t5i can only use EF and EF-S lenses.
