Peak Design CL-2 overview

  • 1Description

The Peak Design CL-2 Clutch is a camera hand-strap that quickly connects and disconnects to your camera using a dyneema anchor and a tension clip. The strap that goes around your hand can easily be adjusted with your non-shooting hand to tighten it when walking, and loosen it when you need better access to your controls when shooting.

An included Arca-type compatible quick-release plate attaches to your camera's tripod mount, and one of the included anchors is tied into the plate. You simply slide the Anchor into the Link to attach the strap, and slide it out to detach it. To attach the top of the strap to the top of the camera, a custom-designed tension clip acts like a small carabiner. The strap can be adjusted from 7.1 to 11.4".

    CL-2 Clutch Camera Hand-Strap is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 90.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing for stills as well as video. I bought this hand strap because I was tired of having a neck strap that was not only uncomfortable, but that made me a walking advertisement for a camera company. So I stumbled upon Peak Design. Now the hand strap is more than comfortable, in fact, I rather it over my neck strap. This thing also excels at video. I make small videos for events (nothing professional), and with this strap, I can have somewhat of a looser grip on the camera while ensuring it won't fall to the ground. For those curious of the setup I'm currently running, I'm using a 60D, 24-105 f/4L and 50 1.4. And for video, I've got a VideoMic Pro mounted. I love how comfortable and compact the strap is!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Strap. I use this product with a capturepro clip on my nikon D7000 in lieu of a neckstrap, which I hate. The strap works great so far, and the strap tightening system is handy, especially compared to my old strap, which was not adjustable. The strap is comfortable and breathes easily, which was a problem with my previous, pleather strap, which was comfortable, but tended to stick and make my hand sweaty. I gave this product four stars because I'm not 100% convinced that the cable won't part and send my camera crashing to the ground. However, I haven't had any problems yet, and the cables are designed with color-coded layers so that any significant wear is obvious.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Big hands + Small camera = Return I had seen the Kickstarter video for this product and believed this was the PERFECT solution for me. It's well designed, well constructed and exactly what I wanted. However, I'm a big guy (6' 3 and over 250 lbs.) and I have a small camera, the Fuji X-T2. Consequently, the fit wasn't right. My long fingers would rest on the lens of the Fuji and not the grip. However, I'm certain that it would have been ideal for the old Canon 7D, which I sold when I moved to Fuji. I'm pretty sure if I had normal-sized hands or a full-sized camera, or nearly full-sized camera it would have been a great solution. Unfortunately, it's a return.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does NOT quickly detach (not fully at least) I LOVED the idea of this product. I love the Slide strap from Peak Design and thought how perfect this would be to quickly switch from a strap to a clutch with my A7S2. I bought this online from B&H and was led to believe (or perhaps just assumed, to be fair) that I would use the anchor already on my camera from the slide strap (and the one I would put on the base of the camera, of course), but that's not the case. It doesn't utilize a detachable anchor where the normal camera strap attaches (where I already have one attached from the other strap I already purchased by the same company).. instead its a not-so-quick-to-put-on strap that has to be inserted (difficult to slid through with a pd anchor already attached) and buckled each time you want to install or remove the clutch/hand-strap. The only quick release anchor is the one on the base plate.. only halfway making it quick. Peak design made an amazing strap and I figured this was designed to be used with that (like buying into their ecosystem).. but it's not. To make it worse, even if I were not wanting to switch between shoulder strap and hand strap and just wanted a dedicated clutch strap (why would I need to get it off in a hurry if that were the case?), I never got a fit that I was comfortable with and allowed me to access the A7S2 controls properly. (This is obviously a matter of taste.. but I would advise anyone to take the time to try a couple out.)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from BUYER BEWARE!!! NON SLIP STRAPS LEAVE PERMANENT MARKS! So I laid the camera on top of some clothes on my dresser --the strap making contact with a new orange pull over. 2 days later i have to peel the strap from my shirt! This was in a dim room --NO direct sunshine and the temperature was completely normal. No heat direct or otherwise. Completely dry. No liquids. No did ANY liquid ever come in contact with the strap. The shirt was brand new, completely dry nor had it been even washed yet. And to date the non slip strips on the strap go well beyond non slip and actually remain sticky/tacky in spots. So I tried lying it on an old clean t-shirt. SAME THING. Leaves black strip marks that do NOT wash away. NOT happy. I can no longer use this strap!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Design issues. Insecure and uncomfortable. This strap looks very well made, but it has some design issues. When attached to my A7R3, the strap doesn't stay on the back of my hand at all, but always stay on my knuckles. Therefore, it is really hard for my finger to press the shutter release button. Very uncomfortable and doesn't give me a feel of safety. I purchased this strap to replace my 20-year old Canon hand grip strap, which always and firmly stays in place. I think I will have to do some DIY work to make it work for my small hand. If you use mirrorless camera or Sony E-mount camera, look elsewhere.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid I use this for skateboarding photography, mostly up close fisheye stuff, it's super nice because it allows me to get in tight and yank the camera away from danger without worrying about dropping the camera because my hands are sweaty/cold/etc. Also great for any scenarios in which you may get bumped into ie. sports, street photography, etc. because this strap really does keep the camera glued to your hand. One thing I don't like is the price, however this is the best clutch strap on the market and it is much cheaper than having to purchase a new lens when your camera goes flying.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Limited usefulness Comfortable and effective on a Pentax K-3, K-5 or K-7 with battery grip attached, but only for landscape-orientation shooting. It interferes with holding the grip in portrait orientation. Without the battery grip attached to the camera, no Clutch length adjustment setting allows me to get my index finger on the shutter release or front control wheel without making the strap too loose to hold the camera securely to my hand. I have big hands and a smallish camera, and someone with smaller hands might not have the same trouble without the battery grip in place. But overall I'm disappointed. I've wanted this type of grip strap for years and never had one until now, and now I realize it's just not practical for me. Nuts!
